5 out of 5: Gobi Manchurian - Baked cauliflower 4.00 served with a ginger, onion, garlic served with a sweet and sour sauce
Amber M.

St. Martin's Square is really stepping their game up. What used to be a grungy, sketchy area, is now a delightful neighborhood to stroll around, where you can find fun cocktails, delectable food, and a fresh ambiance. Before entering, we read the Kai menu posted on the window outside. I love when restaurants do this! The menu listed a variety of offerings from American pancakes, to brunch-y eggs, to healthy salads to Indian dishes. My partner and I were in the mood for some healthy options, so we decided to eat at Kai after seeing the various lunch options. The vibe inside is casual, with different Indian paintings on the wall, and they had a fantastic playlist of songs as well (we turned the Auto-Shazam feature on the Shazam app during lunch). We were already digging the place before our food came out. When trying a new place out, my partner and I like to order several dishes and share, so we can get a full experience and try out several items. We ordered the Dahi Puri (Round hollow purls filled with tamarind water, yogurt, kachumber salad and roasted chickpeas) to start. I wanted to be adventurous which is why I chose this item... I LOVE chickpeas, but this dish was an odd mix of flavors, and I wish I had just gotten the hummus. The stuffed chickpea ball itself, was chilled and tasty, but the yogurt flavor didn't sit quite right with me. We followed up with the quinoa and kale salad (featuring avocado, chargrilled zucchini, with a chimichurri dressing) - we added halloumi to the salad and that was a fabulous life choice! Our last dish was the Gobi Manchurian (Baked cauliflower served with a ginger, onion, garlic and a sweet and sour sauce), and it was absolutely a hit. Even though I didn't really care for the chilled chickpea balls, I still give this restaurant a 5/5 because the other dishes were so spectacular, the menu has a fantastic variety, the pricing is affordable, and the service was excellent too. I will be returning here, to try their various brunch offerings as well as some of their curry bowls. Who knows, maybe I'll have a cocktail next time too!

The pancakes are amazing! I've never had anything else off the menu because they are so good! Such a large menu with a wide variety of food. Peaceful atmosphere.

Kai is a Leicester and local business run by a fantastic couple. They source much of the ingredients from the nearby Leicester market - so rest assure all food are fresh and delicious. Try out the Buddha bowl for something special and healthy.

On our first full day in the UK (from US), we wanted an authentic English meal. After sleeping in…read morefrom the time change, we ate around 1pm. The place is very quaint. The tables downstairs are a little too close for my liking. We went upstairs and found a cute window table, overlooking the alley below. We started with a pot of tea and debated the large menu for a while. I opted for the Caspian breakfast and my husband ordered the pork pie with a side of chips (fries). The presentation on both was great. I wanted to love the food, but it was just okay. The Caspian breakfast was a waffle with sweet cream cheese, topped with smoked salmon, poached eggs, caviar eggs and sliced avocado. The waffle and poached egg were cooked perfectly. I didn't care for the sweet cream cheese and ended up taking that off. The avocado looked pretty, but tasted underripe. It also came with toast. My husbands pork pie was okay. It tasted like a summer sausage in a flaky pastry. It came with a side salad with Stilton cheese and walnuts, which was also just okay. The server was very friendly and prices were reasonable. If I lived here, I would definitely try again, but I would order different foods.

As a foreigner when you think of an English breakfast or brunch experience what often comes to mind…read moreis the fairy tale inspired tea and toast enjoyed in a quaint bed and breakfast, and unfortunately this dream is often shattered when you realize that Starbucks, Cafe Nero, and Pret have more or less taken over the wonderful world of breakfast. Fear not - Mrs. Bridges Tea Rooms has preserved the traditional quaintness of a B&B in a way that caters to anyone and everyone, and it's absolutely excellent. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Tucked away in a side alley, the location of Mrs. Bridges is as much a landmark as anything in Leicester, and once you step inside you'll understand why. The most comfortable of settings includes various tea rooms on two levels as well as an outdoor seating area that I was able to enjoy on what was a beautiful sunny Saturday morning. It was crowded at 1030, but I was still able to have a seat right away and service didn't lag. I can't stress enough how fantastic the atmosphere at Mrs. Bridges Tea Rooms is, and loved that even school age children seemed to really enjoy and appreciate it along with the expected adult crowd. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? £6.50 is a beautiful price for French toast with bacon and maple syrup with a pot of tea for an additional £1.85. As you can see in the picture my portion was hearty and I was more than satisfied at the end of the day with what would have easily cost me £12 in London. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? I'm not entirely sure whether the atmosphere or the fact that it was a beautiful day just made everything taste better, but my french toast was amazing even while being as simple as can be. There was nothing fancy here but there didn't need to be, and I noticed as I was sitting down that a steady stream of people were coming in for sandwiches to go that everyone was raving about (and kudos for having special sandwiches that rotate). There are some meals that you really can't even put a finger on with respect to what makes it so good, and this was one of those meals. Dual Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Mrs. Bridges Tea Rooms is a well known Leicester establishment whose appeal could possibly be bottled and expanded, but for now it's a brilliant gem in the center of England that I'd gladly visit daily. Star Granted.
