French toast with bacon- a winner!
    Helen F.

A traditional tea room in the lanes. It was recommended to us by a friend for breakfast and the Yelp reviews were all very good, so we went along today. We sat in the front area but there's also a garden and an upstairs. Decor is very traditional and there is a counter at one end and a blackboard with specials. You find a place to sit and have a look at the menu which is on the table, then someone comes over to take your order. Although the place is super traditional, the menu is not. Yes they do all day breakfast, sandwiches, afternoon tea and so on, but there are some very different options, such as smoked duck sandwiches, candied beetroot and brie and rabbit milanese. We were there for breakfast and there were plenty of brilliant options, all priced at £6.50. Edd had a full English which he enjoyed. He asked for no beans and was given an extra hash brown instead, which was kind of them. I liked that there were lots of interesting options for breakfast, including a bagel with hash browns and poached egg and some trendy avocado options, all of which I would try next time. This time I chose French Toast with bacon and maple syrup. It was a giant portion, with two slices of fluff, eggy toast, two big slices of crispy bacon and plenty of maple syrup to drown it in. I couldn't finish. With an apple juice and a black coffee, the whole meal came to about £15. I paid by going up to the counter. Unfortunately they only accept cash, not card, which is why I've given it 4 stars.

Very good traditional breakfast. Sat out in the back patio. Friendly staff and variety of great beverages. Highly recommend.

I was very impressed with my last visit here for Saturday night dinner…read more After some champers in the bar downstairs, we were seated at the window on the middle floor. I had a decent chicken liver parfait starter, followed by a very decent stab at a pheasant dish. The food here is clearly prepared with care, and whilst it's perhaps fairly straight-forward, it's well-executed. A note on the service. For the starter I'd actually ordered the "chicken pinchos", but I'm a chronic mumbler. I mentioned this when the parfait arrived (which was neither on the menu nor mentioned as a special, so not clear where it came from) and they immediately apologised profusely and offered to replace it. I said I was happy enough with the parfait and not to bother. When the bill came, my starter had been taken off. The true essence of service lies not necessarily in being perfect, but being gracious if a mistake does happen.

The prices looked pretty reasonable really, although previous reviews had hinted at expensive, it wasn't that bad! Especially if the food was good. It has a very nice airy feel to it with white panelled walls and ceilings and dark wood floors. The greeting was bright and polite and my waiter cheerful and interested in the menu. I chose the soup, onion and garlic, and trout with pak choi and a side salad as main. I couldn't resist a glass or two of Primitivo red, and sat at a lovely little table overlooking the street (it's all upstairs) with a beautiful white tablecloth. Very nice indeed!
