Kahu Bruce was our officiant on 6/9/18. He met us at the Dept of Health when we got our wedding license, and then met w/us afterwards to discuss the ceremony. During the ceremony, he will remind you both to breathe and enjoy. We wanted a beautiful Hawaiian ceremony that was non-denominational and he definitely delivered. As a destination wedding (half of our guests are from California), our mainland guests loved the cultural aspects including the meaning of ALOHA, the gifting of the Maile lei, and the sand ceremony. He even allowed a moment of silence for our dearly departed. My family and local friends liked how it was just different from your typical ceremony. We located Kahu Bruce through a wedding website (I don't recall the exact one) and asked him to officiate our wedding. We were not from Hawaii and were doing a destination wedding, so there was some risk with everyone that we picked. Kahu Bruce met us several days prior to the wedding to help us do the paperwork. He guided us through the process and then spent an hour and change afterwards just chatting with us and helping us understand his ceremony and style. He was very polite, well mannered, and a very good adviser - the sort of person in life that I would consider a mentor if I was able to meet with him regularly. Day of the wedding Kahu Bruce showed up early, surveyed the site and was ready to go right on time. His officiating was flawless, and the words that he shared with us were perfect for the occasion. We received our wedding license from him in the mail right on time as promised. Unrelated: There are several videos out there on YouTube that show Kahu Bruce's style. The ceremony was more perfect than we ever could have dreamed of and we are so grateful that he honoured our love in such a meaningful way. Kahu's direction and expertise on the day was so helpful and he made the ceremony run smoothly. All our family and friends (and even the photographers) raved about how moving his ceremony was and we will remember it for the rest of our lives. Wow! Bruce is absolutely amazing. We were completely blown away by his professionalism and the service. He made everything so easy, so comfortable, and his service was perfect for us. We met him at the courthouse and he got there ahead of time to get a number so we didn't have to wait. I don't think it mattered because it felt like he was a celebrity with the clerks. They all knew him and everything went super smooth. After, he led us through how the procession was going to go. That made us feel that he was going to be amazing and it also made us feel super comfortable. Once the big day came, we were a little vague on the location, but he found it and arrived early. Once I (groom) got there he got everything he needed (leighs, flowers, etc.), I showed him the spot, and he took control. He told everybody what to do and it went perfect. We hired Kahu Bruce Ah Leong for our wedding ceremony in August 2018 on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. His reviews appeared good & we were excited to move forward with him. When I first reached out to him, the process started out straightforward. He sent me his contract and I carefully reviewed it. I am always hesitant to enter contracts as my professional experience is weighted in the litigation industry and I never prefer to enter into an agreement that is excessively binding. I reviewed his contract and it appeared okay. He required a 50% deposit to reserve his services. I sent him a check in the mail and he reserved our date. Two months before our wedding, we experienced some family circumstances and made the decision to get married on the mainland early due to personal reasons. Therefore, we no longer needed Kahu Bruce's services in Hawaii. I reached out to him and explained this and he proceeded to tell me the deposit is not refundable unless he is able to book another couple for our date. I was shocked & reviewed his contract carefully again because I did not remember verbiage that stated this anywhere in the contract. I reviewed our past email exchanges and saw no mention of this anywhere. I also don't recall him verbally explaining this. I even ran the contract by my family members who are currently in the legal industry, and we picked apart the language written in the contract. I sent an email to Bruce explaining that I re-read the contract and it did not state ANYWHERE that the deposit was non-refundable or any terms surrounding that. I worked in the legal industry for many years. I'm pretty familiar with contract verbiage and like I said before, I don't usually get involved with anything that's binding/non-refundable. That's why I read through contracts pretty thoroughly before I sign. I told him that unless he could direct me to a clause I am missing, I would expect my deposit refunded based on the contract we signed. His response was "Please review cancellation policy." I responded and told him I did and explained by observations in the email I just sent, and to please refer to that. There was no clause ANYWHERE that stated the deposit was non-refundable unless he could book another couple. His response was "Inn cancellation policy, last sentence, this aspect is non-negotiable and non-refundable?" Under the cancellation section, there is a sentence that states "Should you cancel my services, notice must be provided IMMEDIATELY. In reserving your special day and time, I often turn down other inquiries, this aspect is non-negotiable and non-refundable." I explained to him that this clause is vague, does not specifically state what is non-refundable, nor does it mention anything about the deposit that we paid. Contract verbiage is strict and must be transparent and directly stated for consumers to be held up by the law. It cannot be vague. "This aspect" does not equate to "deposit." It must be directly and fully outlined/stated. His response was "I will reach out to you." I called him and left a voicemail and he never called me back. Instead, he sent me an email stating that he will not return our deposit unless he books another couple for our date (this is written NOWHERE in the contract). He stated that his wedding services agreement "is just that, an outline of the expectations of my services, it is not truly a strictly enforced contract with rigid verbiage meant to be enforced and picked apart by a court of law." So what was it then? And if it's not a strictly enforced contract, was he just conveniently keeping our money based on whatever terms he wanted to enforce? This felt fishy and like bad business. I have read and re-read his contract about 10 times to date, and I still see no transparent mention ANYWHERE that the deposit is non-refundable and he will only return it if he books another couple for the date. Nor did he ever tell me this over email, over the phone, or anywhere both verbally or in writing. I reached out to him to check in to see if he had ended up booking another couple for our date about 2 weeks ago, and he still hasn't responded. I will not pursue legal action over $162, but this exchange has been ridiculous. I don't even care about the money at this point, but rather the bad energy I received from him throughout this experience. Per the contract, he had no right to keep our money. I told myself if it was returned, I wouldn't write this review, however with the lack of response and breach of contract, I had to give a warning to those who may be booking with him. I understand a lot of couples don't have a change of plans in regards to their ceremony, but this experience seemed quite focused on the money. In reading a previous review about him, looks like someone else got the same vibe. Hopefully this helps someone. Just be aware when booking with him that the deposit is non-refundable and he appears to be quite into the money & less into the people he is serving. read more

Kahu Bruce is wonderful and our guests loved him! His warm smile, friendly demeanor, helpful instruction, and reminders to breathe (haha!) set us at ease in front of our guests. While my new husband and I are not religious, he had a beautiful non-denominational ceremony to recommend including his own as well as traditional Hawaiian prayers and customizable vows. The prayer translations he had provided were beautiful as was his definition of ALOHA which he used to open up the ceremony. He thoughtfully explained Hawaiian tradition, his prayers, the lei exchanges, and hand positioning to our guests welcoming them into our special day. We hired Bruce for our 20 year vow renewal and it started off fine..We both had busy schedules so we played phone tag a lot. It was a little rocky as anything I asked I was told he would address closer to the date so that was a little frustrating. I was appreciative when my payment and contract wasn't sent due to an oversight on my part & he still held the date. In all fairness I wasn't sent the contract, I was just sent a questionnaire instead and thought that was it as far as paperwork. Things went sour on the day of the ceremony. We were late, by about 20 min because the hotel had lost my sons attire for the ceremony when we gave everything to them to be steamed since they were all wrinkled from the flight. Our boys had matching outfits so this was BAD! The hotel manger, my sister, and I spent ALL morning searching for a replacement shirt or entirely new matching outfits! It took us hours to find matching shirts in their sizes which set us behind by hours! Then the hotel elevators broke down as we were leaving! 10th floor, 11 people all dressed up carrying bags- it was a mess!!! In all the chaos my bouquet got left behind so we had to send one car back!! Lastly, everything took so long that by the time we got to the location of course my twins have to go potty !! I was on the verge of tears and was SO stressed beyond belief! I had planned for months to avoid this exact type of situation. I wanted everyone to be on time, relaxed, put together, and just enjoy the moment. When we arrived I could see how mad Bruce was. He looked straight at me and said,"Your late! I have somewhere else to be after this. First thing, where's my envelope (referring to his money). " He did not ask if everything as ok. No hello or warm welcome. Nothing but frustration and rudeness in his demeanor and words. I wanted to tell him forget it but off course I couldn't, there was no replacement. I wanted to cry so much but couldn't let him get to me, like it or not, he was going to be part of our ceremony. The ceremony itself was ok. The words he spoke were beautiful but the way he carried himself wasn't warm and reassuring. He kinda nudged or gestured what we should do or where we should be. Kind guidance would have been an appropriate way to wing this. My husband was really mad but kept his mouth shut, what would that have helped. The hotel messed up big time but they sincerely apologized numerous times and did their best to make it right. There's nothing Bruce can do to go back in time and make this sour memory right. This was our ceremony and he ruined it for being late by 20 min. We are not those people who are always late and think their time is more important than others. We know everyone's time is valuable and I hope that Bruce realizes that sometimes people to have legitimate excuses for being late and a little kindness and understanding could go a long way! I am trying to make my peace with it and remember the beautiful meaning behind that day. That our kids were there to witness our love and commitment to each other, that our few family members could make it and share this day with us, and that our photographer and musician were understanding and amazing! read more
