Everything I read about visiting Schwerin online said to stop at this establishment and have some…read morecake. I did just that this Saturday before heading down the street to visit the Schwerin Castle. I had spent the morning exploring the Altstadt in Schwerin, and decided that a coffee and slice of cake sounded like a great snack before heading to the castle (which you can literally see from the front tables). It was seat yourself, so I grabbed a table in the sun and began scanning the menu. It is mostly in German, but does have English translations under most items. I ordered a latte macchiato, and discovered that I had to go inside to order my slice of cake. After I received my coffee, I did just that. There were plenty of options, but I took the recommendation from the lady working and chose a raspberry cream cake (I wish I remembered the actual German name of the cake). She took my table number (which was collected by the waitress outside) and I sat back down with my cake. Both my latte and cake were outstanding. They gave me the push I needed to tour the castle and gardens. I loved the ambiance of this café, and they have plenty of food options for whatever you're in the mood for. If I had had the time, I would have come back for a real meal later.

Cafe Prag is most definitely not representative of its name. Pretty average restaurant, food was…read moreokay with nothing special and the service unfortunately was not the best. I had a Tivoli salad which was quite nice but not worth my euro. It was good enough for us to leave full, but we were somewhat unsatisfied. The restaurant itself is very nice, but that is about it. I am sure they might be better for the famous German Kaffee Kuchen. So if you do want to eat there maybe try this option better? For such a beautiful and typical city I would've expected better and more varied restaurant options. I can´t even remember the service so I´m simply not going to comment on it. But base din other reviews it seems like it is rather bad. Location is really good, so do look around before you settle down for this restaurant :) Mucho love, D.

Place is really cute. Nice atmosphere…read more After reading other reviews it seams that they have a rotating menu and a couple waiters/waitresses do speak a little English. Our waiter helped us with the menu and gave us recommendations. We had a pretty good Dunkle for a beer option. The duck was great and the stroganoffs was really good too. No noodles. I guess that's a bit Americanized if there are noodles. The gravy on both was delicious. We had the chocolate cake and a coffee ice cream float for dessert.

This was probably one of the weirdest dining experiences I've had in Germany…read more The restaurant/biergarten was tucked away in the city center of Schwerin. For some reason I had this vision of like a Hofbrauhaus or some sort of classic German building with these exquisite murals painted on the way. It took me a minute to figure out the restaurant was right in front of me; very modern design for the face of the building. Upon walking inside, you get a very cozy, family feel (we were seated toward the entrance which didnt give us a chance to see the rest of the establishment. The hosts and waiters were extemely nice. Even though most of them did not speak a lot english, they tried and worked with us. Most of the tables seemed to be reserved, but they were able to squeeze us (and our baby stroller in) last minute. So props to them. Food, on the other hand, was interesting for a lack of a better description. I ordered a creamy tomato soup, but it was pretty much a bowl of marina sauce one would use on pizza, garnished with green onions and croutons (could have done without the greens). For the entrees, we order the Lammragrout (lamb stew) and Omas Saurfleish (sour, pickled pork). Both dishes were cold when served. The sour pork came in a mini mason jar, but seemed like it was just freshly taken out of the fridge. It looked like meat particles floating in a vat of its own gelatinous fat. Im giving the benefit of the doubt that this is how it was intended to be served. Not a bad taste, but I had my mind set on a warm meal. My wife's lamb stew came on a cast iron skillet which gave the impression that it was going to be hot. Her first spoonful came up short and it was rather cold. In fact, she ended up burning her mouth with the potatoe wedges instead. Throwing those bad boys into the stew was how she ended up heating it. Three quarters of the way into her meal, she bit into something hard. When she retrieve this solid particle from her mouth, it looked like what was a fish bone (the lamb they used must have had a small rack/rib cage I'm guessing). We both ended up laughing it off and still enjoyed our experience. Sometimes its the little things - you either let it ruin your day or move on and rise above.

I love their emphasis on environmentally sound practices and I can't stress enough how good the food is! None of three of us who went are vegans (I'm pescatarian and the other two also eat meat), but we loved the food and all agreed we would definitely want to go back on our next trip to the Ostsee. I messed the euro to dollar conversion and only realized when we were back on the Autobahn that I hadn't tipped - so embarrassing! I'll have to remember to make up for it the next time I go. The food is very reasonably priced and exceptionally high quality, plus the cook and her husband are a really friendly couple. I'd strongly recommend checking this restaurant out!
