Upon arrival I had the option to sit with people or alone, naturally I opted for company no matter how miserable or boring. Food Presentation Not a culinary masterpiece, but then again, the chef is literally throwing food onto your plate, so there is no time for decorum in all honesty, which is fine, so long as whatever is being thrown looks delicious and suitable for ones pallet. Food Quality The chef delivered what the menu promised and the verbal contract I entered with the waiter upon initiating our contractual agreement for the items selected on the menu. I know this is Texas and it's probably a sin to have a steak any other way than medium rare to licking you in the face, but for a medium well steak with fried rice and veggies, it wasn't bad. Although slightly bland, it seemed to be missing the garlic butter combo, to my surprise they didn't offer any here. The serving size was sufficient and I had left overs for another day, no thanks. How do you get soda wrong? Dr. Pepper tasted watered down, so in the end I gave up and drank water. Service Excellent at first, however it seemed as though the waiter should have been spying the drink levels, I almost went back to my truck for a water bottle. We have been to this restaurant many times and have always liked it. However, today we had a terrible experience and I don't think I will ever go back. We called at about 6:15 on a Saturday night and were told there was no wait. Got there 10 minutes later and the place was slammed with people. Oh and we had been told we couldn't make a reservation. Almost an hour and a half later we finally got told our table was ready. We had two small children with us and they were quite hungry. They walked us to the table, and when we got to it we were told we couldn't sit there, that the open table was for somebody WITH A RESERVATION. We had to go sit back down at the front, they could not find another table and couldn't say how much longer we would have to wait. And, the people with the reservation weren't even there yet, they came in later. Needless to say we were very angry and talked to first a manager, and then the owner. We asked for some kind of discount for all our trouble and were offered only a round of drinks. We told them that wasn't good enough and then they offered free dessert. We wanted a significant discount for being treated so badly but they just wouldn't do it. We walked out, almost 2 hours wasted. Extremely frustrating and disappointing. Better than anything we have in Atlanta. Generous portions plus great sushi , beef takaki and made to order yum yum sauce!!! To add to the atmosphere the lights dim every 45 minutes with strobe "lightning ", thunder and "rain" that falls around the dining area then flows around the restaurant in the coin pond. We arrived at 7:00 waited over a hour to sit at the grill. We then had to wait another hour because the grill was not turned on. It took a hour for the grill to heat up. A lady came by telling us to try a new mushroom. Mushrooms are included in your meal but she wanted to know if we wanted to try a different one this time. We said "ok why not" those mushrooms ruined the entire meal. It was already 10:00 pm so we just paid for our meal and left. I looked at my receipt and noticed that she charged us $40.00 additional charge for the mushrooms that were suppose to come with the meal. We order three chicken meals and 3 waters. The total of the bill was $160.00. I was told bill would have only been $120.00 if we had said no to the mushrooms. read more

Best place ever!Food was excellent as always. I can't complain at all. Visited this great place in 2011 when I came home for a short visit. I moved back home now and I grew up and lived in Amarillo till I was 39. Been gone for 17 years. I was a customer of the original Kabuki restaurant for 16 years before I left. I went at least once a week then. I will make this a monthly thing for me. I eat out 4 times a month. But this will be a permanent once a month stop. I would do it 4 times a month but don't want to overdo the experience and the food. The cost is not that much for lunch. And it makes a great place for a nighttime dinner date. This is the one restaurant that I have missed for 17 years and I tried to find one just as good even Benihana at Walt Disney World can't come close to this. read more

---- PLEASE READ TO THE BOTTOM about Kabuki's HORRIBLE Customer Service ---- Usually I only eat at Kabuki when someone else wants to go there. The food is usually good enough, but as everyone else says, the prices are way too high. I had a horrible experience eating dinner there a few days ago. After asking the waiter about the "Special of the Day" he promptly listed the chicken fried rice entree. When the bill came we were charged the regular menu price ($7.50 MORE X two people.) After inquiring to the waiter a manager came to us and said that it was only a lunch special. After much discussion about how unclear it was listed on the menu, AS WELLS AS having the waiter confirm said special, the manager on duty said nothing could be done. We asked again for the special price and he refused. After a little more discussion he simply left. I've tried multiple times since then to get in touch with Kabuki Romanza and talk about how the manager mishandled the entire situation. I've posted a similar review on their Facebook page only to have them deleted...twice!! I will NEVER eat at Kabuki Romanza again and will encourage all my colleagues, friends, family, business partners to do the same. Only very loosely is this place a Japanese restaurant. Most people are familiar with teppan-style or hibachi-style places... that's what this is. You are not going to find bento boxes here. It's not very authentic, but it's really, really delicious. The chefs are accomplished, and I love grilled food, anyway. You will get decent sushi here, though. The best in Amarillo, for sure, but that's not saying all that much. I can only handle a few of the nigiri selections, because no matter what tricks they may have, we're still 12 hours from the nearest ocean (which is the disgusting Gulf of Mexico). Their roll selection was pretty disappointing, too. I'm trying to hard to keep it in persepctive, because I know there's no way sushi in landlocked Amarillo will ever be as good as the stuff I've had in Portland, Seattle, San Fran or Santa Cruz. And yet none of this excuses lack of imagination, which is the main problem the sushi list faces here. The drink menu used to be epic, but also suffers. And while it still has a full bar, much of the sake list was culled when Kabuki moved from its previous location. The prices are a bit exorbitant, especially the whole dinner-prices-for lunch-on-weekends thing, and the new seating charges/extra charges for fried rice instead of steamed. It's very obvious that the owners are trying to recoup the incredible cost of the new building, complete with the boat theme, indoor moat, light and water show, etc. It's definitely cool to go there, especially with a date or something, but the flashy digs aren't so fun when you get the bill. I know several people who work there, so I can be certain that all this has hurt waitstaff much more than it has hurt the restaurant itself. Even those customers who have specified that they feel taken adantage of for the sake of greed tend to take it out on servers rather than bothering to talk to the owners. If you're concerned about what your money is spent on in a social sense (i.e., if you care about organics, free-range, fair-trade or anything of the sort), message me, and I can fill you in. There's a lot of awful stuff going on behind the scenes at that place, but it doesn't specifically effect the review at hand. Except maybe for the ocassional surly waiter. Ok, I have eaten at teppanyaki restaurants from FL to CA, including top notch places right by my house to the ONLY teppan restaurant in Joplin,MO. In comparison, Kabuki is WAY below the avg. Even Tokyo Japanese in a town of 40,000 blows this place away in terms of price and quality. You get a LOT of rice and vegetables and the steak and shrimp dinner was decent, but overall this place is a big joke. The server did not know a thing about the menu. There was no show at all from the cook, even though there was a family with 2 small kids at the table. Most places also give two sauces: one for the meat and the other for the fish/shellfish items, not here. I was visiting, so not sure what other options exist in the area, but this place with all its gimmicky waterfalls and thunder effects, is too much kitsch and not enough teppan :( read more

Very odd place. We were driving thru Amarillo on our way to AZ and decided to stay overnight. It looks like this place used to be a giant store (Best Buy) or a warehouse it's just huge and feels like your sitting down for dinner at a Costco or something. To top it off the ceilings are painted blue with white clouds and they have a "rain" effect which I have no idea what it's related to in terms of a theme. The sushi was mediocre; we left much of it. The service was slow and average at best. I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone unless you have a desire to see "rain" fall from the ceiling. read more

Love the food. The seafood is the best and the sushi is wonderful. One of my top five places to go for sushi in Amarillo. If you do the grill, I recommend the calamari steak with the fried rice. They also have bean sprouts for the dinner crowd. Don't go in until your entire is present because they will NOT seat you otherwise. It's a little annoying but I suppose, understandable. They have a full bar that makes excellent adult beverages and beers on tap. How the mighty have fallen- and no one at Kabuki seems to care. The 'rainstorm' is now funny- the way too bright lights dim, there is a film of some sort that was showing so low on the wall no one could make out what it was, and the rain only worked on about 1/8 of where it should. Sad. The waitstaff could not care less, only trying to hurry you along so they can get out of there I guess. No interaction from the chef, he was just doing his job, and obviously not loving it. Still too expensive for what you get. Despite having a place that needs attention, the owners wife was busy sitting down gabbing at the table of some customers, oblivious to what was going on around her. Everytime I come to Amarillo with my brother who lives in Lubbock, he insists that we eat here. I'm not sure what his attachment to this place is, but he's not alone. This place is packed every weekend night with regulars. We got there early at 5:45pm cause we had nothing else to do in Amarillo (sorry, but there's nothing to do in Amarillo), and we managed to only have to wait about 5 minutes for a teppan grill and got seated. I ordered the Teppan steak meal ($21 w/ fried rice). It starts off with miso soup, which.. seem unrecognizable to me. Isn't the dashi supposed to be kinda cloudy as you stir it around and let it dissolve? And where was the tofu and wakame? All I had in mine was scallions and mushrooms. Mushrooms! What?? Hmm. Perhaps it wasn't miso soup at all and I'm just splitting hairs over some mushroom chicken stock. Oh well. After the soup came ginger salad, which lets be honest - kinda sucks. Doesn't really matter where you have it. It's usually always just pieces of iceburg lettuce, some thin pieces of carrots and a ginger pureed dressing. Mine was.. wattery. I took a bite and it was over. On to the hibachi entree - my Teppan steak. If you're unfamiliar, the Teppan steak is the thicker cut NY strip steak. Sukiyaki is thin cut. and Filet is the tenderloin cut. Anyways, I asked for mine to be cooked "rare" as usual. The chef starts with making the fried rice with some scrambled eggs. He did an excellent job. Usually I complain that it's over seasoned with soy sauce and over salted. But this was perfect. And it was a bit crispy on top. yummmmm Next comes veggies - zucchini, squash, onions, and mushrooms. Now, these I felt he over sauced. Wayyyy too salty and it was hard to justify eating all of them because I was afraid of my blood pressure. The meat was cooked rare, maybe not as rare as I would've cooked it, but I'm sure he has to cook it to a certain degree so nobody ever complains of raw beef. *drool* Ordered a couple pieces of Salmon and Scallop nigiri. It's more expensive than I expected, but I guess sushi is rare in Amarillo right? Each two pieces cost $6, but I was really surprised at how good the fish was! They used the sea scallops and they were really sweet. I also ordered the No-Name Roll ($11), which had Yellowtail and spicy salmon. That was delicious as well. Maybe I should have just ordered sushi for my meal? Hmmm, next time. Some people will find this dining experience a bit over the top and a little annoying while others will love it and come back every weekend because it offers a totally different kind of eating environment. I kind of fall right in the middle of these two groups. I like the fact that the hibachi tables are on a fake giant boat that's surrounded by a moat of water. That's neat. The fake rain and the giant projection of Japanese drummers, however, was a little too much and I felt a little overwhelmed. I couldn't really have a nice convo with my wife cause of the loud fake rain and the bright lights shining in my eyes. Oh well. By the time we left, there were tons of people waiting for tables. Like, I said, this place gets packed. When you have a limited amount of decent restaurants like in Amarillo, I guess people know where to go for a good meal. It's here at Kabuki. read more

Good Sushi, decent service, great people, fun atmosphere Fun Sushi / Japanese Hibachi restaurant in Amarillo Texas, that I visited for Sushi and a beer. Food - The food was good. I had spicy California roll and yellow tail sashimi. the rolls and yellow tail tasted great. They weren't the quality you would expect in Miami or any other coastal city, buy for Amarillo Texas in the middle of the prairie..... I'll take it! Location - Huge building, on the frontage road right on interstate 40. It is a large, odd shaped building that looks like it could have been a theater or even a contemporary church in the past. Ambience - The ambience of this restaurant is probably it's best quality. When walking in the front door you realize the middle of the restaurant is actually a huge ship that seems to be sitting in water. The hibachi tables are in the middle of the ship. about twice and hour rain falls strategically out of the ceiling into the water surrounding the ship hull. this show is complete with flashing lights to replicate lightning and sound affects mimicking thunder. This was a really neat feature. although I was seated at the bar I could turn to my right and see the whole show. Service - The service was so good but yet so bad! I really liked the server and bartender a lot. I waited for at least 4 minutes at the front door before anyone realized I was there. After someone realized I was waiting I was apologized to and promptly seated at my choice of the sushi bar, the hibachi tables, or the bar. I chose the bar and proceeded to ask questions about their menu. The bartender and head bartender seemed to be both taking care of me since there was no one else at the bar. They were both very helpful and kind. I ordered and then waited over 20 minutes for my yellow tail appetizer and spicy tuna roll to come out. The two ladies waiting on me were very apologetic and continued to update me on the status of my food. It seemed to be the sushi chef who was uber slow and had a couple of orders in front of me. All in all, I will come back again. It is the kind of place where I wish yelp allowed half stars because it was a little better than 3 stars but not quite the caliber I would want to give 4 stars. if you want good (not great) sushi or Japanese in a slow relaxed atmosphere with good down home Texas waitstaff then go here and enjoy a night with friends or family! read more

When you first walk in you see a big boat and on the inside of the boat the have there grill where they cook in front of you, it is a really cute theme and while your eating they flash the lights and water falls from the ceiling like your in a storm. We arrived in a large group which took up 2 station facing each other. We expected to be eating at the same time, however the sushi we got all arrived seperately about 30 minutes apart and the cooks arrived seperately. The sushi wasnt bad and the teppan was good, however the cooks were very sloppy and had no presentation... they just basically cooked. We were highly frustrated with the time it took to get our food , drinks and the lack of service in general. The place wasnt full and by the time we left there was only a few tables filled. The waitress wasnt friendly and acted more annoyed that we were asking where our food was at. Good tasting food, but probably wont be back.... 16 of us. Staying in Amarillo for an extended business trip and wanted to try it as it was close to the hotel and highly recommended by the staff. Scoped out their website and the pictures looked very good. Sushi looked high quality and professionally made. The actual result was anything but. Ordered to-go because of Covid-19. Boxes were much smaller than expected. While I certainly don't believe that quantity makes up for quality, the price of the sushi versus the serving size was very disproportionate. Even at high end sushi restaurants, the rolls were a bit larger for similar prices. Once I made the short trip back to the hotel I opened the boxes and was very disappointed. The rolls were sloppy and oddly made. The contents were not like anything I've had. I ordered a tiger, spider and toro sushi. The rolls were mostly filled with cream cheese and the toro was very tough and lacked the melt in your mouth feel that most toro does. Maybe my expectations were too high for a Texas sushi restaurant, but even so, I will not be going back and recommend you avoid this place. read more

I was very impressed with this place! I'm front Denver and eat sushi there a lot, but have also had sushi in California where it's pretty fresh, but Kabuki is amazing! Price is a tad higher than other places in the area, but you do get big rolls, I think each roll had about 10 pieces, whereas most places I think you get around 6-8. All of the sushi was fabulous, but I highly recommend the tiger roll, dynamite roll, spider and even there spicy tuna, which is pretty standard was awesome.Also, miso and beef broth soup were good as well as the chicken teriyaki skewers at lunch. Pretty cool ambiance, great server. We got there about half and hour before they stopped serving lunch, and there was no feeling of her thinking " oh crap, now I'm stuck here" that some servers give you when you arrive at the end of a shift. Oh what an enchanting dinner! I truly felt like I was in Japan! While I have to admit that the outside looked a bit drab, the warning on the elevated step telling me that it "slippery when wet or icy" made me feel safe, like every Japanese person I've ever met has made me feel. Upon entering, the staff, like the Japanese, were very attentive and seated me promptly to a nice round table right next to the very authentic moat. Given the Japanese nature to be imperialistic (whatever that means, I've just stayed at that place in Vegas called the "Imperial Palace" that was much like the Japan in my dreams), it didn't surprise me that this place had a moat. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't opt for the Hibachi experience because then I could have boarded the ship where the Hibachi tables were moored, alas, my plastic coated table would have to do. My drink and order were taken quickly, and the menu was full of lovely choices... Then at 7:07 on the dot, BAM a damn storm blew through the restaurant! All the lights went out, authentic looking lightening cast mystical shadows on my fellow diners, and a monsoon burst forth from the ceiling down into the moat below. This MUST be what going to Japan feels like! My face had to have looked like a kid in a candy shop as I was awestruck by the enchanting storm accompanying my miso soup. Sadly, at 7:12 the storm had passed...but as I've read, the weather in Japan is so fickle! The storm came back at 7:37. The food was delicious and abundant. My girlfriend's side salad had a hair in it to start the night off. Which we decided to not eat it. I ordered a diet Dr. Pepper and the soda was flat. So we sat there already let down waiting for our food. The chicken was dry and the fried rice was bland. But what really made me give them 1 star vs. 3 was they were not enforcing social distancing and sat 2 tables, 1 in front and 1 behind with a couple's kid coughing. It was actually last year, on my last visit to Amarillo, that I first entered the peculiar environment of Kabuki Romanza. What I really must mention to those considering a visit is the atmosphere - there is a fake thunderstorm that passes through the restaurant, complete with simulated rainfall. And it is very dark in there. It seems like kind of a fun place to go on a date, actually, and I hardly ever say things like that. It is cheesy-fun. Now, I realize that I will lose tons of credibility just for writing this on Yelp at all, but I am not really a sushi person. I don't really know how to judge, except on a scale of: I Would Not Touch That Safeway Sushi Wrapped In Plastic Unless My Life Absolutely Depended Upon It up to The Homemade Sushi That My Brother-In-Law Makes Which Tastes Like Absolute Bliss. But sushi restaurants are not usually for me, because raw fish just lingering about seems rather unsavory. Anthony Bourdain traumatized me. I'm leaving 3 stars because I didn't try the hibachi grill so I don't know about it. I had miso soup, spicy tuna roll, and Alaskan roll. I really enjoyed everything. No, the sushi guy didn't engage me in conversation except to ask if I was happy with everything and I was, and I really didn't want to have a conversation anyways. My waitress was nice and efficient. The rain in the center of the room was pretty cool, good idea in my opinion. The rolls are a bit pricier but you get 10 pieces with each one which is more than other sushi places in my experience.
