It did not taste like brisket or look like brisket. Only had two sides and both were horrible. For BBQ I expect homemade. Especially when I have to pay extra. But gave them chance thinking surely they jazz it up a bit. Some onion, bell pepper, bacon, some bbq bits of meat. They boast BBQ champions but not with the food they are serving.

My middle Eastern family is not from such an area. So while I was familiar with the names of items, the way they were prepared was new to me. I ordered a few dishes, Naan and a mango lassi. I was surprised as the total price was lower than other, similar restaurants. I was so happy when I opened the bags. The food was incredibly fragrant. We had lamb plate, falafel & Dolma plate, and chicken tikka masala. Everything...I mean literally everything was delicious. It tastes like it came out of someone's actual kitchen. The flavors were simultaneously familiar and unique. The Tikka Masala was different from what I had in the past and it was wonderful.

When done correctly, the filling inside is juicy and tender while the outer bread shell is fluffy and crispy. Great Tang definitely makes some delicious Xian Bing, and I was honestly really happy to find some authentic Chinese food at Midtown Beer Garden. This food cart does serve some other fare such as fried rice and chow mein, and even skewers, which we were tempted to order as well (but we had already placed our entree orders at other food carts). For our Xian Bing, we ordered a pork and chive as well as a lamb carrot cumin. Neither took very long to be made, and as soon as our beeper went off, we went to grab them. They were so piping hot, almost too hot to hold, but that just goes to show how freshly they are made. I could not wait to sink my teeth into such pillowy, savory goodness. When I was finally able to try them, they were seasoned so perfectly and strongly, as northern Chinese cuisine is packed with spices and intense flavors. It also came with a side dipping sauce, which only added to the dimension of the flavor. If I had not ordered a beef noodle soup, I would have ordered another to enjoy. What a fantastic gem in Midtown Beer Garden. This food cart is high on our list to revisit the next time we hit up PDX, and the prices are so affordable. We will most definitely be back!

It wasn't, but as I crept around the corner I noticed Chavita's: panaderia, taqueria, carneceria, tienda. Normally, at panaderias I will sample the torta, since they make their bread...but I haven't been hungry enough either time. So I got tacos the first time, and a sope the next. Tacos. I got two chicken and two carnitas tacos. I got a new question: "white meat, dark meat, or mixed?" I requested one white, one mixed. Honestly, the chicken was moist, but a bit bland. The carnitas were delightful though. A mix of crispy and buttery tender pork over their homemade corn tortillas. They were delicious. Trip two I got a sope. Pastor. It was good, quite good. I've had better, but the tortilla was a good texture, and there were ample veggies. Not too much meat. In case you haven't had a sope, it's like a tostada, but the tortilla is way better. It's thicker, generally firm on the outsides but not crispy. They have a red and a green salsa. The green is very mild, a nice light tang. The red tastes smoky, fairly like the adobo that chipotles are commonly packed in. Both are thick and go pretty well on the chips they serve. The service is enthusiastic. Food comes out slow for a taqueria. They are friendly. The place is pretty hot inside...they need a fan (it's requisite for taquerias anyways!) but there are tables outside. Anyways, this is the best thing going right now near where I work...so give it a shot. With a bit of improvement, I think Chavita's could move to 5 stars.

UPDATE: 11/09 Changing my score from a 4 to a 2 New owners and that was not an improvement. I don't know what happened to the couple who used to run the place but food has taken a hit. Most importantly, the handmade tortillas are gone. These come out of bag. The whole mom-pop, homemade aspect that was so compelling before is gone. I wish the new owners luck. Sometimes this could be a good thing, but in this case they have significantly reduced their offerings, and the items available are not as flavorful or served correctly either. We went as a group of six adults and 1 toddler, and were not offered or suggested on comfortable seating options given that the food is all served family style and in one single platter. We ended up having to move tables and chairs around on our own to ensure each member of our party had access to the dish. Now coming to the food itself, we ordered the enjoni special but were only given 5 of the eight veggies as per the menu listing, and when we asked our waiter, he brought out three more items but not the ones we were missing but rather repeats of the same. Perhaps this wouldn't be as big of a complaint if all the items were actually flavorful as they used to be previously, but instead most of the veggies were exceptionally bland. I really would love for these things to be improved and fixed as I would hate to have to avoid a place that we had such fond memories of! The reason for 2 stars instead of just one is that they do have halal meat, and atleast those were properly flavorful!
