AWARENESS: I learned about K9 Development a few years ago when my daughter brought her dog here to have Jack help with service animal training. Fast forward to today. I'm here to see Jack, who will be helping me to train my new puppy to help combat my on going PTSD issues. NARRATIVE: I can only write this review about my interactions with Jack, since he has been the only person I've had direct contact with. Jack is a true professional (aka: Dog Whisperer). My first visit with him with my pup was an indoctrination meeting. Basically, I sat and Jack watched how my dog dealt new surroundings and some unexpected, never had my seen before items. During the hour interaction with both my dog and I, Jack asked questions and gave me tips on how I can start getting my pup to reach the goals I expect and wish her to perform. Jack is patient. Attentive and like myself, gruff. I like that! SCENE: K9 Development is located in rural Tracy, off of Hansen Road, behind the Safeway distribution warehouse. The road getting to Jack and Amy's is a compacted gravel road with speed bumps along the way. The maximum speed limit is 10 miles per hour. No rooster tails unless you wish to find out what I mean when I say Jack can be gruff. RECOMMENDATION(S): Like I stated, I can only speak for my interactions with Jack which thus far have been fantastic. I have talked to other dog owners who have taken their dogs to see Amy for training. Those conversations were all of phrase too. TAKE YOUR MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE! I am very surprised by all the 5 star reviews....Jack was extremely unprofessional. He made many rude, racially insensitive jokes. Smoked cigarettes throughout the entire one hour training session. Mind u he was smoking so close to my daughter who was attending the class with me with not a care in the world. We had to move away from him because he kept chain smoking throughout the lesson. He was telling endless stories about his childhood and how his dad would beat him with a belt and how he voted for trump and other political topics. (There's nothing wrong with talking politics, but there is a time and place and this was not it) he was very loud and obnoxious he cussed like a sailor. No professionalism. There is some very serious redneck culture here.Put down the cigarettes for an hour and have some respect for the people paying good money to learn from you. It was a Very unfortunate experience. My daughter and I were really looking forward to training our puppy and learning with him but after the first class i just could not return. I will not be back. No thank you. Today, I picked up my Able from his two week board and training program. OMG Able is like a new dog!! He is now very well trained and very well mannered. My dog is a sensitive, fearful 8-year-old senior husky who struggles with separation anxiety. I brought my dog here for day care but they require training for new dog so I agreed. The website advertises that their training is "tailored to each dog," so I trusted that they would choose methods appropriate for her age and temperament. Unfortunately, after 15 sessions, I discovered by accident that my dog was being muzzled, wearing a shock collar, and tethered with a metal wire during her stays. This did not look like "tailored training", it looked like a one-size-fits-all correction method used on every dog, regardless of age or personality. When I asked, the facility owner explained that the shock collar was being used for basic commands like "come when called" and "waiting at gates," and that the muzzle was "for safety" because she would nip at the leash when frustrated. While I appreciate that they replied, this still does not justify using such extreme and frankly barbaric tools on a fearful, anxious senior dog with no history of aggression. These are such basic commands that should not require a shock collar, muzzle, and metal tether to teach. What bothered me most is that I only discovered this by accident. I usually just dropped my dog off and left but that day I decided to stay and watch, and I witnessed my dog came out in full gear. At no point did the facility proactively communicate that they were using these tools on her. Every time I asked how she was doing, all I got was "she is fine," "she didn't play," or "she played a little." While I signed general paperwork stating that such tools might be used, nothing was ever verbally explained or confirmed for my dog, specifically which tools would be used, why they were necessary, or to obtain my explicit approval. Even if the paperwork allows for general use, professional and ethical standards in dog training emphasize clear communication and informed consent, especially when using aversive methods on senior, fearful, or sensitive dogs. Had I been properly informed, I would have declined immediately. For a facility that advertises "tailored training" and emphasizes trust, this lack of transparency is extremely disappointing. On top of that, unlike most dog daycares that offer live-feed video for owners to monitor their dogs, this facility does not provide that. There are also warning signs forbidding taking photos or videos during visits, making it extremely difficult to independently see how dogs are being treated during their stay. I'm sharing this so other dog owners know to ask specifically about the training tools and methods being used before enrolling. read more

This is a long overdue review for an outstanding business. Our wild but loving dog cobra was running off and not listening to us. All dog owners want a dog that has consistent recall. Cobra had been to another facility on several occasions, but we didn't feel like we got the customer service we deserved and the training was not showing. I found K9 development, and instantly felt a difference from the first phone call. They are very responsiveness and it seems they genuinely care about your dog and your individual goals. They definitely are not the cheapest when it comes to board and train, but you get what you pay for here. When we picked cobra up after a two week board and train, he was able to go off leash. We took our 16mo old Doberman here and it was VERY well work every penny. They do use positive reinforcement and treat training but what I liked is the staff knew how to train and correct my high energy breed. They worked with all types of dogs there, there were other farm animals there so dogs could get the smell and visual interaction which I thought was genius. I highly recommend. Awhile back my wife was searching for a suitable and capable training facility for our Australian Kelpie, Khan! He is a 3 year old rescue from the Tracy Animal Shelter. Kelpie's are naturally very active. They love to play and jump! But Khan spent some time on the streets before he was rescued and it was obvious early on he had some behavior issues and would need training. We found K9 Development in Tracy, CA. Their facility and staff is truly AMAZING!!! They embraced the opportunity to help train Khan and thus far have done an INCREDIBLE job!!! We enrolled him in private lessons at first, and then joined a group training class. I honestly didn't think he would come this far in this short a period of time. Where do I begin! First and for most, I wish Yelp had a 10-star option, as that is what Jack and Amy at K-9 Development deserve, at the least! My wife and I, have always had smaller dogs, but wanted to venture out and obtain a medium size dog breed. So we dove right into the deep end and added a Vizsla to our family. We discussed and made the decision to invest in his training and found that K-9 Development was located 10 minutes from our home, which was perfect for us. We contacted them and set up the following schedule with Jack. * Two days after is arrival, we brought him over to meet Jack, so he could evaluate our pup, and see what we were dealing with, in order to put together a solid training plan for Copper. The meeting went well, Copper had just arrived a few days earlier, as was still getting adjusted, so he was a little timid during his initial visit, but Jack would agree, that changed over the course of the next year. Look around folks, as Jack and Amy are one of the only trainers in our area, that are willing and have the facility to work and train with puppies once they arrive in your home, usually at 8 weeks. Of course, when they arrive, they have not had all their shots, so the training at this younger age was on a 1:1 basis with Jack, no other dogs. Note: Jack is a straight shooter, and from day one, will tell you, the results you get, is solely based on what you the handler puts into the training sessions. So be prepared to do the homework that he assigns and believe me, it will show next week. If not, you will be wasting yours and Jack's time. So, if you're still with me, below is what our boy Copper went through his first year with Jack and Amy, and he is now 16 months old, and still loves going to see Jack and Amy, whether it be for daycare or some fine tuning. * Copper worked with Jack from 8 weeks 1:1, once a week for private training for the first 14 months after his arrival. * Copper attended the elementary school obedience class Amy and Jack put on for the City of Tracy. Copper had a head start before this class since he had already been working with Jack. But it was crucial so Copper begins to train in the presence of other dogs. * Copper followed up with the High School and College class they offer at their facility. * Copper also attended swim lessons during the summer that they offer. * In parallel with the 1:1's with Jack each week, Amy began working with Copper a few days a week in daycare, in order to step up the socialization required, so he could eventually join playgroups or be out in the yard with other dogs and play nice. * Copper has also spent numerous days at daycare, and on Saturdays has been able to enjoy the playgroups that Amy hosts. Results. Well, after doing all my homework over the first year or so, and listening to all the advice Jack and Amy offered without an obligation to apply their techniques, there is what we ended up with. * A dog who has never in his life damaged anything within our home and has only chewed on his toys and blankets that belong to him. * A dog who is well mannered in our outside our home. Does not jump on us or visitors, understands how to greet people, and is well socialized with other dogs. Don't get me wrong, nothing is full proof, so you might run across situations, but if you know how to handle your dog in those situations, it usually works out for the best. * A dog who loves his kennel at home, or while traveling in vehicles. * A dog that is used to many sounds, and routine outside noises like the garbage truck and motorcycles, and will only bark at something new that he's never experienced which is rare now. * A dog that can walk with a loose leash, and stays in heal on command. * A dog that we can take anywhere with us, beach, hotels, restaurants that allow dogs, and we have been able to take him to many places with us, without the worry of how he will behave. The list goes on, but overall we have a family dog, that we enjoy having in our lives on a daily basis. Is it perfect yet? NO, but as Jack will tell you, it will never be perfect, just a constant work in progress to help our dogs become a better dog today than they were yesterday! So, if you would like to help your dog reach his or her full potential, or just need help in specific area's, stop looking around and go visit Jack and Amy!! They have always treated us and our dog as part of their family, and put our dog's needs above anything else which was very important to us. Still continue to love Amy and the work she does. DAYCARE - She's Chewie's new daycare. I was alway nervous leaving Chewie at other daycares because of the horror stories. But NO WORRIES with K9 Development. This daycare is awesome. They are out most of the day and 100% monitored. It's basically a dog ranch. I love it. They get behavior corrections. So they are learning manners and reprimanded not just getting separated when they do something bad. So no bad habits are shared or developed when here. Which is great because I've taken Chewie to other places and he's picked up bullying habits that other dogs used on him. And she feeds them HOT DOGS! So they play and get trained at the same time. If you're looking for a day care for dogs this is the place. It's for dogs, it looks like it's for dogs. Not like those other places where it looks like it could be for childcare or human spa care but with dog clients...those places are fooling you. You're dog doesn't care what the daycare facilities look like. This place is clean. It's open. You can see everything. Other places they don't let you see the whole facility...it's cause they're hiding something. Your dog wants to play with other dogs. Be outside. And eat hot dogs. TRAINING - We've finished Chewie's private sessions. He's on e-collar recall. He's doing great. I can let go of his leash and he can wander. When I call he comes. We will be continuing with the group lesson. It's great because he can train with other dogs running around as distraction. And chickens too. So it gives him this stimulation that he doesn't have at home when we train him. It's safe because the other dogs are also being monitored. BOARDING - We've boarded Chewie 1x so far because Chewie howls at night if no one is home. So we sent him to boarding to get tuned up on not howling all night and disrupting the neighbors. He got trained. He'll be going to more boarding nights a few more times so we're sure. Pricing - more expensive but well worth it. You don't just get daycare. It's daycare, training, clean and safe. I can't believe more people in Tracy don't use her. I've had people tell me they've book trainers in San Jose and San Fran for stupid expensive amounts....I'm like why? Cannot find a better place to train or board your dogs! The owners/ trainers are so knowledgeable about dogs and have fixed many problems I had with our dogs. We board our dogs regularly at this place and the dogs are always excited to go there and when we pick them up they sleep for hours as if they were at an all night party. I am always able to relax when I board my dogs there knowing that they will be taken care of as well as I would do it myself. The kennel that the dogs are placed is heated and air conditioned and the dogs are exercised many times a day. read more

I took my 2 year old chocolate lab for some re-training. We originally had training at PetSmart, but felt we did not receive consistent training, and teaching for us or our dog. K-9 Development came highly recommended from some friends who work with a German Sheppard dog rescue. We decided to start fresh and sighed up Step 1-K-9 Elementary it went great, we got a lot of information, training and advice. If we did not agree with it , Jack was great in explain his reasoning of why he does it this way. He always told the class that we do what we feel works for them and their dog. I found that he was usually right ! He explained why I needed to adjust how much I was feeding my dog and she needed to lose weight, and to talk to my vet! I told him I did talk to my vet, and per Jack he said talk to him again cuz my dog is over weight. He was right, I dropped in to my vet and yep she had put on too much weight. I adjusted the amounts per the vet and Jack, and cut back on treats she did not earn! Lou is trimmer and has more energy. We learned a lot from that class alone and Lou really loved the work. We decided to move to the next class Step 2 K9 High. This class was a little more involved and we had to learn to correct our dogs when they did not do as asked of their training. We learned to be consistent with are training, praises, treats and corrections. We learned how to correctly communicate with our dog and not confuse them of what we want from them. The class was great We learned a lot and our dog learned what we wanted from her. We also learned we need to work on our training on a daily basis to get the results we want. When I got my Labrador puppy, he came "started". Meaning he was house broken, sit and stay, and fetch trained. Two weeks into ownership, I realized the "puppy" did not see me as the "pack leader" and I was losing the control I was supposed to have. I was desperate as I wanted the relationship between my dog and I to be successful. A neighbor said try K9. Wow!! I did. If you want something that exceeds all expectations, go here. I have had Jack on private training and my now 7 month old puppy has had radical changes. He is still a puppy and "goofs off", but an incident the other night let me know how much the training is working. The pup got out of his crate at 3:00am while I was obviously asleep, and he rattled around the kitchen, dining and living room. Other than eating what was left of the cat food, he did not chew, tear, or otherwise destroy anything in the house. He found one of his chew bones and sat on the floor chewing it. He has learned what no and off meant even when I wasn't there. He has improved his overall training and is becoming a joy for me. It is I that need more training than the dog, which I will continue. The day care has to be marvelous. The pup goes with enthusiasm and is so happy to see Amy and the ladies who work there. A dog does not go with a wagging tail and "big grins" to somewhere he doesn't like. The place is clean, quiet and well taken care of. I have only boarded him one time and it was totally a pleasure. I can truly say, I am so fortunate that K9 Development is close to me. They are truly skilled and knowledgable people. Jack and Amy are at the top of the league. Jack is THE BEST TRAINER in the bay area hands down. I worked with Jack almost 15 years ago and he helped me train my new puppy german shepherd from basic obedience to becoming a well trained protection dog. Just recently I got a new dog, a doberman pinscher puppy and although I wanted to go to Jack again, I lived too far away so surely there must be a good dog trainer somewhere closer to me in Alameda? I looked far and wide for a trainer who was closer to my home in Alameda and was as good of a trainer as Jack and I interviewed about 5 trainers in the east bay, searched all over the internet and I can say with 100% certainty that Jack is THE BEST TRAINER in the bay area. No one even compared to Jack. So, we decided to make the trip to Tracy for obedience training and I have to say it was well worth the trip and the money. Our puppy went from a crazy puppy to an obedient puppy who actually listens and respects us in just a few sessions. Jack's methods of Teach, Train and Prove work, his philosophy of reward and correction work 100% for any dog. He is patient, provides great analogies so you understand the concepts, is clear about expectations and homework, and above all my dog LOVED him. He was able to build a respected relationship with my dog from the very start. True animal lovers, with a deep devotion, amazing talent, and decades of education / training / Kenneling / breeding experience. I adopted a very smart, tough, unsocialized Alpha male Shepherd. I'm a laid back easy going, slow learning person. Really bad combination. Thanks to them, I now have a very controllable & happy companion. It's a real joy to go off leash on walks, and have full confidence in myself and Super-mutt. Jack is fantastic. I live in Mt. Shasta and he was a last resort for me and my dog. He spent time figuring out what the issues were with me and my partner. Many trainers I have been to take 2 minutes to look at you and your dog and say...it's an obedience issue or you are not handling your dog right and give you an hour and that's it. K-9 Development is great! We have a Rottweiler that is about 9 months. We have been taking her to train with Jack since she was 3 months. Jack has a lot of knowledge, experience and passion to train dogs. I would definitely recommend him. His wife Amy, conducts a dog social class on Saturdays where many dogs play together under her supervision. It is a good way to help teach your dog the proper way to play with other dogs. In addition, they provide boarding which is nice since I know they will be exercised and taken care of well. read more
