Communication - I met Jay first through Thumbtack and from all the offers I received he was the one person who tried to understand what I need without giving me the let me come then I will tell you. I sent him pictures when I could not explain well and he was and is attentive and prompt. Service- he came on time fixed my issues. First time, it was easier than he thought and second time more complex but he resolved both for me. And, didn't leave a mess. Price- Service and communication are not the only reason why I gave him a call back it was also his reasonable price. He will give a fair estimate and will take from there. Now like any job if it's more complex there may be a price adjustment but he is always reasonable. Most importantly he doesn't bullshit you because you are not handy. If you want high quality, detailed work, with a nice finish, this is NOT the guy…read more The job was to enlarge an interior crawl space opening and replace the existing frame/door with an insulated door and weather stripping. It was $375 plus an additional $125 for insulating materials/labor. For this price I was expecting a completely finished, well installed product, with quality materials and remaining mess/job materials to be cleaned up. The first concern was that a small drop blanket was used in front of the door. But, knowing that you are cutting into concrete block and the subsequent dust that permeates the air, this would hardly be sufficient. The smoke alarms in the entire house went off due to the amount of dust that was created and not blocked appropriately to keep from getting all over the house. When the job was finished and I pointed out the materials and dust collected around the work site, including a nail left behind, I was informed that he "didn't have a shop vac" and "doesn't normally clean up building materials". The additional money spent on insulation labor and materials was used on; narrow stick-on weather stripping that was falling down due to half the adhesive part left to open air, which then stuck to the back of the door, causing it to pull and fall when opened; and Styrofoam board, screwed into the back of the door, partly held on with a busted part of a ruler, and not secured at all on one side. I was told this was "quality work" and that he had technically used what we had agreed on. The front trim/door is marked up and, the trim which he reused from the previous door is too short on one side. Instead of informing me, and agreeing to replace the trim, he re-installed it and said "nothing I can do about that". Additionally, the front latch does not line up and cannot be closed properly. When I expressed my displeasure, and pointed out various items, I was told I technically got what we "agreed" upon. I went ahead and paid the full amount to end the interaction as it was evening already. The next morning, I notified him that I was still displeased and, that the door is not able to function as a proper door, nor is the price for the additional insulating materials and poor labor he used justifiable. He then told me I had flown into a "rage" after asking for a small discount ($40-$50) so I could get necessary repairs. He refused. Really disappointed. I was hoping to find a long-term handy man but all the great reviews really let me down. I guess this is NOT his "type" of work. Buyer Beware.

Poor workmanship. Poor communication. A frustrating and, at times, genuinely unsafe experience…read more What initially felt like a company we could trust turned into a project we wish we had never hired them for. If you value your time, money, home, and peace of mind, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. The work on our floors and dry wall required multiple return visits. After the second flooring visit, we told them the floor was still uneven and that the vinyl continued to pop up. On the third visit, a team member stepped on the area that was popping up and said, "There's nothing wrong!" After we insisted they open the floor, we discovered that cardboard packaging from the vinyl floor boards had been used underneath the floor to address the leveling issue... When we finally thought the flooring was finished, another problem surfaced. The trim at the top of our staircase that had been installed only about two weeks earlier came loose, and I fell down the stairs as a result. We then discovered that our replacement dry wall was visibly uneven and not flush with the existing wall. Even after their team came back to work on it, the transition was still not flush, if not worse! Regardless of whether subcontractors were involved, we hired Into The Woods to ensure the work was completed properly and ultimately hold them responsible. On top of having to repeatedly identify problems that should have been caught through proper supervision and quality control, the most frustrating part has been communicating with Into the Woods direct team members, especially their owner, Shamus. We constantly felt like our concerns were minimized and dismissed. Even if the work had been perfect, the interactions with the company throughout this entire process made us wish we never signed anything with them. *Additional Review After Owner's Response* Unfortunately, Shamus' response to my review is itself a reflection of our experience with Into The Woods. Throughout the project, our concerns were repeatedly reframed rather than addressed. We were reassured that issues would be taken care of, only to find them unresolved on subsequent visits. When we continued to speak up, we often felt our words were misconstrued, our concerns minimized, and the burden shifted back onto us. The response emphasizes that the company made 7-8 return visits. But the number of visits does not mean the work was properly completed. In fact, having to repeatedly request corrections is exactly what made this experience so frustrating. Many of those visits were to address warranty or punch-list issues that should have been resolved as part of completing the original work. I also want to correct the characterization of the financial accommodations. The nearly $10,000 shortfall was not covered by Into The Woods as a "good-faith discount." The remediation company that referred us to Into The Woods chose to cover the additional costs after we shared our negative experience with Into the Woods. They asked Into The Woods to go above and beyond to restore our home, and we are genuinely grateful to the remediation company for stepping in to help make things right. Separately, Shamus offered us a $1,000 "gesture of goodwill," which we declined. This offer came after we discovered cardboard packaging from the flooring underneath our floor. The stair-nose explanation in the response is particularly frustrating. The response leaves out the fact that approximately two weeks had passed since its installation. When the stair nose came loose, we photographed the underside and found a substantial amount of adhesive that appeared not to have properly bonded. The company subsequently returned to repair it. We don't expect construction to be completely free of problems. We do expect a contractor to listen to concerns, supervise the work, communicate accurately, and make sure problems are actually resolved. This experience cost us an enormous amount of time, frustration, and peace of mind. After everything we've experienced, we would not hire Into The Woods again, and we hope prospective customers consider our experience before making their decision.

After pricing Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring at a couple other retailers, including the big-box DIY stores, we stopped back by Carpet Depot to speak with Kevin (the owner) and his staff. As before, they were knowledgeable and professional in every way. After taking a few weeks to decide regarding the type of LVP (more for my wife than me), we made our decision and set up a time for Kevin to come by to double check our measurements. The price was extremely good and very competitive. As with most things in today's retail market, it took a few weeks for the materials to come in: we put LVP on the downstairs floor and a high-grade commercial carpet on the stairs. During the whole "waiting" period, either Kevin or his staff called us to keep us informed where everything was or wasn't. When everything came in, we were told it could take up to two days. We had to have an area of tongue-and-groove ¾ inch oak removed and the old carpeting in the fireplace room and the stairs removed as well, so we figured this was reasonable. When the installation crew arrived, they informed us it would all be done in one day! The installation guys were phenomenal. Face it, it doesn't matter how nice the flooring is unless it is installed properly. The crew was polite, and they worked extremely hard. I used to manage job sites and these guys were great! This was perhaps the number one of the reason why we returned to Carpet Depot--the professionalism and service of Kevin's installation crews. We are beyond satisfied with our new floors! They finished quickly, they were extremely concerned with our satisfaction, and they were professional. The market right now is very tight cost-wise. You always get what you pay for and there is little ability for a quality install and product at a very low price. This is just where we are in our economy today. What makes the difference is the customer service and the people doing the service. The biggest difference in today's economy is the service. Carpet Depot delivers on this.
