He gave us several design options when we told him our wish list and worked closely with us in the lead-up to the actual construction; tweaking the designs to accommodate our ideas and presenting us with alternative ideas to help us realize better design options. Brian's familiarity with Teaneck, NJ building codes was very important to our project as my wife and I had heard from other contractors and architects that Teaneck is a lot more stringent than other townships. We found this to be true during subsequent inspections during the 6-month course of construction as well as post-construction application for Certificate of Occupancy. Brian was with us every step of the way, helping us resolve unforeseen issues (HVAC) as well as providing various drawings required by the township at various stages leading up to the CO. You can't ask for anything more from an architect. Maggie drew up the plans for a finished basement and redesign of my entire first floor. The renovation was fairly complicated, especially creation of a finished basement which involved lowering the existing basement floor, underpinning of the foundation walls, and complicated re-routing of existing plumbing and electrical. Maggie drew up all the blue-prints, took care of all the necessary filing and permits with the Village, and oversaw all of the work performed by contractors and subcontractors. Maggie is also as pleasant as can be and was super responsive to all of my phone calls and emails. She even has contacts for engineering services at a reasonable price; you will find that engineering calculations are almost always required for any major renovation, and that a good engineer at a reasonable price is impossible to find. Needless to say, the renovation turned out beautifully, and without exaggeration, I could not have done it without Maggie's services!!! We came across this architect because the previous owners had hired them to draw up plans for what…read morewe were thinking of doing, a deck and a lot more. Since they had measured everything, and the plans for the deck were already there, we thought it'll be an easy an efficient transaction. According to Mario Buzzelli, who works at this office though, deleting most of the previous plans and adding a door must take them more than 17 hours, according to their flat rate and hourly rates. I can even live without a deck, but will not be swindled. Afterall, they've already charged the previous owners the full price for these plans. Had they asked them to modify the plans, they say it would cost a fraction of that quote. At that point, I started wondering how much more money we should expect to be swindled for every little thing. I asked a specific question: if we just ask you to submit a plan that only includes the bathroom, which they had already designed, how much will that be. You'd think I'd get a straightforward answer. But no, what I heard was that it depends if you want to add a room, garden, ... Sophism is what swindlers are good at. In our interview at the office, Mario couldn't let go of the past. We were asking about architectural plans, while he'd go on a tangent about what the previous owners did with each of the rooms, where they had coffee or a lot of other stuff that first of all, a new owner doesn't care one bit about, and second of all, it's the previous owners' private business. The previous work done for the previous owners seems detailed and professionally done. But hey, that's the minimum I'd expect of the architect.
