I have had the pleasure and good fortune of having Marcus tattoo me over the course of many years. He's done a full sleeve on me, a huge back piece, my entire right hand, a belt around my lower abdomen, behind my ear, and my ankle. I'm planning out my next sessions to meet with him also, flying from the East Coast where I first met him, to his fantastic shop in San Diego. If you're looking for the very best, top of the line tattooer, you've found it in Marcus. He's not only one of the best artists I've ever met, but he's a true Gentleman, funny, and so easy-going. He's professional, easy to talk to, and has an incredibly gifted imagination (for those who may not know exactly what they want and need guidance and/or ideas). There was a point where he did a pretty large cover-up for me as well on my forearm (bad tattoo work from a bad tattooer years ago), and I had no idea what to get. He talked with me, giving me long-term, sound advice, proving that he's truly an originator and master at his craft. In addition to that, the cover-up he did is amazing! He's the only tattooer and artist I truly trust with my skin. His work is beyond exceptional, his standards are 100% on point, and he works quickly and efficiently. His attention to detail is incredible. His innovation and zest for life carries over into his work, including the Tattoo Documentary Series he made called: The Gypsy Gentleman. If you've never seen it, do yourself a favour and watch it. He's NOT a paint by numbers, off the street kinda one hit wonder that so many tattooers out there are these days that are a dime a dozen. I was tattooed by Marcus Kuhn in about 2002, when he was in MA. To this day, they are my favourite tattoos (& I have many). I've been tattooed by about ten artists, and Marcus was definitely the greatest. I get many compliments, and more importantly, I'm proud of having such beautiful work by an insanely talented artist. I admit I was intimidated at first, but Marcus is extremely professional and a very nice guy. Out of all of the tattoos I have, the ones that he did look the best. It's not easy to tattoo a neck, and he tattooed my neck on each side. Perfectly symmetrical, beautiful work that I've had for over ten years now, and it does NOT need any touching up. My only complaint is that I can't afford to travel and get more work from Marcus. I actually had one tattoo by one other artist in 2003... I haven't been tattooed since - I love my neck tattoos so much, I didn't really feel that I wanted any more (unless I can go back to Marcus). Also, he didn't give me a hard time about being a woman and wanting neck tattoos (you wouldn't believe how many squares tried to talk me out of it). Marcus is hands down one of the most talented and down to earth artists I have ever encountered! When I turned 35, I decided I wanted to get my 1st tattoo. I spent several months talking to artists all over the world and traveling to different conventions to find someone, whom I could trust and had a vision to help pull together, what became 2 half sleeves. Getting tattooed by Marcus was such a great experience. Right away you can tell you are working with someone who truly cares about the art of tattooing and his clients. I drove just about 4 hours there and back (3 different sessions) and it was well worth the trip. I know he is out in San Diego now, so my only advice to anyone in Southern California reading this is to set up an appointment now! And go as often as you can, because now I am here on the east coast waiting for him to hopefully make a trip back to get more work done. Kicking myself for not getting more while he was out here. Marcus is a master of his craft, and a true gentlemen. As far as tattooers go, he's the genuine article. He's travelled the world tattooing, and has experience -- not to mention stories -- that few other tattooers have. If you watch his series, Gypsygentlemen, it's quickly apparent that the tattooers he interviews, his peers in the tattoo world who are some of the most well respected tattoo artists in the business (Thomas Hooper, TinTin, Valerie Vargas, Steve Byrne), have huge respect for him. He's a heavy weight amongst his peers. San Diego (really anyone within driving distance in So Cal) is lucky to have him. Bottom line: Marcus is one of the finest tattooers working today. Marcus is the best. Hands down. Period. Probably the richest experience I've had with any San Diego tattoo shop. I first discovered Marcus as the host of the tattoo video series, The Gypsy Gentleman. Imagine my delight upon learning that his private studio is right here in San Diego. I spent an extra hour in the shop after my consultation, looking at the walls and digging through reference materials while Marcus finished a jaw-dropping piece on another client. The studio itself is packed with books and portfolios; I could have easily passed another hour in there, gathering ideas for future tattoos.
