If you want your cat to die without explanation, bring them to this facility. I would leave zero stars if I could. My boy Zuko was only 11 months old when I brought him in for profuse vomiting. I called on a Tuesday and was told to give him half of a Peptid AC and bring him to emergency if his vomiting persisted, which it did not until the morning of our scheduled appointment. When I brought him at 11 am on Thursday, Dr. Jan noted his abdomen was inflamed and suggested an x-ray and sedation (to calm him) without providing any information on the possible risks of sedation. I must also add that she and her technician took zero measure of calming him down and handled him quite roughly. Zuko was an endlessly sweet boy and I just assumed he was afraid of the vet, which I also thought was normal for animals being a first time pet owner. I was then simply given a consent form, again, without communication of possible side effects of sedation. Trusting her, I signed it. I now understand that was a terrible mistake. She had me leave him at the facility for a few hours and I was to pick him up later. She then called me at 3:15 and informed me that "something went wrong" and that Zuko had died. She gave him the sedation and his heart stopped. She also failed to give him adrenaline of any kind until his blood was no longer circulating. My partner and I arrived to the facility immediately upon hearing the news and Dr. Jan was distraught, stating that death by sedation is very rare and never happens. Zuko never even received an x-ray for the original cause of the visit. I am left with no answers as to how he passed as she was completely in shock as well and could give us little professional insight. She told us she did not know. There was no suggestion or offer of an autopsy of any kind. When we were viewing his body, she came into the room with memorial papers and had to run back to "another sick cat." It's possible Zuko was given the wrong medication or too much of the sedative, but when we called to ask for a statement to provide our family with more closure and clarity, she provided us with an illegible photocopy of his medical records. When we went to pick up his ashes, she wasn't at the office as it was her day off. I'll note that she knew that we were coming to get his ashes that day and that day the office was only open for 3 hours. I had planned to ask more questions, but she was treating it like it was any other day for her. Meanwhile, our lives were ruined. At that point I decided to report her to the NJ veterinary board because I was tired of chasing her around for answers. That process takes from 6 months to a year or longer. I am left with no choice but to write this review. We are devastated by the loss of Zuko, our 11 month old kitten, whose life was cut short. Dr Jan failed to act in a timely manner to treat him. Maybe I should have brought him to emergency, but his vomiting had stopped for a period. Regardless, I will never know because we were given no explanation. And the fact that she couldn't be bothered to be present for our arrival to pick up his ashes to answer any more questions we had (under the circumstances) was even more heartbreaking. I'm writing this review to reach anyone that it may concern and let them know Dr. Jan Rottenberg cannot be trusted to provide adequate care and failed to perform her due diligence after the fact. read more

Just Cats is the easily the worst vet I've ever been to. First visit cons: wait time was over an hour, Dr Jan called my cat fat (which is true but c'mon), then they pinned her down for the shots and obviously my cat was not happy, but Dr. Jan freaked out and started yelling "what's wrong with your cat?! What did you do to her?!" which was just nuts. Dr. Jan repeatedly recommended that I take my cat to the Raritan Animal Hospital instead, and judging by the pedigree of fancy, expensive purebred cats in the waiting room, I got the impression that Dr. Jan might have a bias against street/rescue/adoption cats. Especially with the way she looked down upon my cat. Not cool. Second visit cons: Waiting time was once again close to an hour. Dr Jan seemed annoyed that my cat was still fat, asked me what I did wrong, and I said I followed her nutrition/diet plan that she had written out for me. I handed Dr Jan her own notes that she had written. She looked at them, puzzled, and said dismissively "Oh I wrote the wrong thing". What the fuck!? She wrote out a completely different diet plan, recommended once again that I go to Raritan Animal Hospital instead, and me and my thick cat were out the door. Pros: thanks to Dr Jan's recommendation (and unprofessionalism), I now go to Raritan Animal Hospital and it's fucking awesome. The doctor there looked at my cat and said, I shit you not, "what a great cat! Congratulations on having such an awesome cat!" They're super nice, helpful, and actually give a shit about your animal. My cat likes them, and they don't freak out on The rare occasion that the cat goes haywire. I'm happy to do the extra driving distance because I know they're the best around. One star for Just Cats, Five stars for Raritan Animal Hospital. read more

I understand that COVID has everyone concerned but my cats are my babies and when they are sick they need to be cared for. I was told this office was extremely expensive but would help my gut baby. well do to covid they are not seeing any new animals. This is horrible!!! Dr Jan and her assistant are fantastic! They treat my Mickey so well I think loves going there! Honestly he would fights me getting in a carrier but now no fighting no crying the whole way there. She truly cares for her patients and it is a blessing for me to find her( thanks neighbor Dan) Took a while to get in as she was not accepting new patients but got lucky one day and they said yes ! After my first visit I knew this was the place for me and my fur babies! I could go on and on but the point is Dr. Jan is a gem of a veterinarian and I trust her completely! read more

I brought my 10 yo car here after taking him to my regular vet several times without his problem being addressed or corrected. Dr. Jan did an exam and mentioned that it could be a serious problem that required more tests. Well we went ahead with the tests and found out that my poor boy had a tumor on his adrenal gland. We scheduled surgery with Dr. Jan recommending a surgeon that performed his surgery at Raritan animerge. It turns out that the cat had a cancerous tumor that was removed and hopefully he will continue to do well. He's back to his sweet loving self and seems to have rebounded from the ordeal. Dr. Jan saved his life and is an excellent diagnostician. I recommend her highly for her skill and compassion. read more

The office is clean and well run and Dr Jan is just amazing as was her office staff and assistant. I brought my sick cat to her and she was compassionate and so knowledgeable about my sick little boy. She took her time with him and diagnosed him with bladder crystals. When you have a love so strong, you only want the best care for your family pet. I brought my almost two years old cat in to have her eye looked at due to concerns of cloudiness on her cornea. Dr. Jan was absolutely kind, caring, and thorough with her examination of my sick kitty. They started the exam with asking what types of food she consumes and how much she exercises. She also had an assistant who helped weigh my 11 pound kitty, clip her nails, and assess her from head to toe. They found that she had a fever as well. They did an exam of her eyes, but could not find the cause of her bleeding in her cornea. At this time my kitty was provided with antibiotics where the vet demonstrated how to give her eye drops and liquids meds through a syringe. I absolutely love that this is a cat only place as my cat is very timid and scared of the outside world. She did very well in this office. It was very clean and organized. I was really happy with how kind the vet was to us and the cat. We will be following up with the vet in two weeks. Fingers crossed for good news for my beloved kitty. read more

We've been taking our cats to Dr Jan at Just Cats for years. She is absolutely wonderful with our babies. She pets, hugs, kisses and makes them feel as comfortable as possible. She listens to your concerns and is very spot on with her diagnosis, if one of our pets is having difficulty. One day Dr Jan's was booked and I took my male Bandit to another Vet. It was Urinary Tract Disease.They said it'll just be this way and really nothing they could do, get used to it. Followed up with Dr Jan and she gave special food and now he doesn't have a issue anymore. She just diagnosed him with Hyperthyroidism and when the tests results came back it was Hyperthyroidism. She takes care of ferals, strays, loves animals and it shows. She never will do unnecessary tests or add on unnecessary costs .Sometimes you wait because she has a loyal following and she is the only vet there, so you may wait a half hour, but she is definitely worth the wait. read more

I recently adopted a kitten and was referred to Just Cats by the shelter. I have to say that I was extremely nervous about going to this clinic after reading the reviews. I have had good experiences but can definitely see how others can have bad experiences in this same clinic. It's a unique atmosphere. Upon entering the reception area, you are immediately greeted by the office 'doggie'. She is adorable, sniffs the cats, and loves the attention she gets from other customers. The office staff did seem less than friendly but once I had her speaking about her cats, she became a very nice person. I called once to tell them that my kitten was sick and she would need additional care at her appointment later that day. Upon arrival, I learned that the person I spoke with (not someone I have met yet) did not write anything down about the additional checkup the cat would need but the person who was at the reception area worked with me to have her examined. So no real harm done. Dr. Rottenberg is very quiet and has been extremely pleasant to me and to the kitten. My kitten is petrified of the vet's office but Dr. Jan takes special care to ease her fears as much as she can. When treating my kitten, as of yet, Dr. Jan hasn't asked to or performed any unnecessary tests (well, none that I've been charged for). Actually, when the kitten was sick, I wasn't even charged anything more than the medication because I had a prior appointment to have her spaying stitches removed (which was already part of the spay cost. I've also never waited all that long and I'm usually going in for 5:30 pm appointments. I'll definitely keep taking my kitten to see Dr. Jan and would recommend Just Cats. It's a nice atmosphere. All the customers talk to each other while waiting and because it's an all cats environment, a lot of people take their cats out of the carrier to hold them. read more

I had my cat neutered there because the accepted the Humane Society voucher and was very happy with the service, but never received any follow-up from them about shots, etc. Then I had to call because my cat was injured. I had to leave a message before office hours and no one ever returned my call. When I called them back, they said they couldn't see my cat--who has an open wound--for two days. DIdn't make any effort to accommodate me and didn't seem to care. Going back to my old vet. read more

Have been making more frequent visits (every 9 months to monitor medication) and seen Dr Kurtz the last couple times. She is very pleasant and understanding about my not wanting to over-do the medical treatment for my aging cat. The new (to me) receptionist is a huge improvement over the other nasty one. She has a pleasant personality which makes the expected wait tolerable. Dr Kurtz seems to run more on time than Dr. Rottenberg and she is just as thorough imo. read more

yes, indeed, i do often end up waiting for a long time to see dr. rottenberg, but she has taken such great care of my cats. and yes, she has often recommended pricey procedures, but she is very respectful and understanding when we often decline. **sidenote: i almost always find that excellent docs (for humans) rarely keep to scheduled times because they spend all the time needed with their patients and dont rush.** my husband spent a great deal of time and energy (and money!) bringing our cat in to the office at first once a week, and then eventually once a month (over the course of a year and a half) for her chemo treatments for leukemia. the doc said that cats respond really well to the chemo for leukemia and we were so pleased to see that it did work for our cat. the staff was always super-helpful with scheduling our appointments, being flexible, etc. the doc also worked really hard with us to find a medicated treat that our cat would eat (she needed steroids daily with her chemo treatments). i will always be grateful for how the doc and staff treated us and our cat during the time. it was scary and hard and exhausting, but our cat is healthy and happy. i highly recommend this vet for your cats. read more

I agree the waiting period is at least 45 minutes to an hour - consistently. Not worth my time plus travel. I feel some part of that is the client talking about everything under the sun with Dr. Jan, with NO regard to other clients waiting. The reception person has always come across to me very snooty, sorry, but I have no other words to describe. I believe Dr. Jan's heart means well and I cannot say anything negative about her to be fair. I just cannot stand the wait... why make appointments !?? pleh.. im sorry! she is a great vet in some ways, (make sure you remind her of all the things you came in for) but hand written records, (which take more than a day and 5 phone calls to get a copy of) rude staff (at times) and xrays that have to be hand carried because they are not digital... it is about the care but the practice is a package deal that you are paying for and it should reflect the money spent. read more
