The artistic director clearly favors chamber music (enough quartets already!) and may be catering to the La Jolla crowd. As with any arts company, they are at the mercy of benefactors' preferences, but more variety would definitely help to move ArtPower to premier status. The venues are all about the UC San Diego campus depending on the scope and popularity of performance. Mandeville Auditorium is perfectly tuned for classical music. The Loft @ UCSD leaves something to be desired. The price tags again favor the La Jolla crowd for season support but on a show here and there it is worth the splurge UCSD students can get a special and well-discounted ticket rate.

The theater was nice enough, although our seating area could have used a good deep cleaning. There were crumbs and other leftover food noticeable. The waitress who took our order once seated seemed annoyed she had to climb to the top where we were sitting with obvious exacerbation over the task. In the two times she was there to take our orders I was displeased with the way we were treated, and some of the comments she made. I got the impression she was annoyed with the audience of children, which mad the experience substantially less enjoyable for me and my son. I will definitely not be going back to this theater and expected a lot more from La Jolla, especially when paying almost $50 for a matinee and over $100 on food. Definitely think this theater could take a renovation in their weekday staff and provide their customers with a more enjoyable movie dining experience. When someone doesn't enjoy their job it shows, and I saw this with several staff members there that day. Would not go back or recommend.

A subscription of opening nights, six performances is $90! $60 for seniors! $20 for students! Regular price general public single performance tickets are $20 each. The performances most often include: a Shakespeare, an 18th or 19 century classic, a popular modern play, a very experimental performance, a dance performance (this is usually sold out in advance) and another modern or dance piece. Last night we saw a wonderful performance of Moliere's "The Misanthrope." The cast was excellent, the sets and production spectacular, overall just top-notch. And there is a new restaurant/lounge at the complex! We will try it next time and report back. Do yourself a favor and check out a performance. We take friends all the time, and everyone has loved it.
