Florida Wildlife Care Center Gainesville's 24-hour Emergency Number (352-371-4443) was the only…read moreservice provider who responded to our many calls for help over Labor Day weekend (2019). And we are very grateful for them! We found a marsupial (possum) in a field near trees being attacked and watched over by several vultures in the late morning over Labor Day weekend (2019) in Lake County south of Leesburg. The marsupial was valiantly warding off the vultures but was clearly worn from the experience and was unable to scurry away from the attackers. She was completely exhausted. We rescued the marsupial by chasing the vultures away and lifting her with a sheet and placing her in a soft linen and towel lined box. We then brought her home to our master bathroom which is warm, dark, and quiet. She had no open wounds but was clearly traumatized. I promised her that the vultures would not eat her alive. Florida Wildlife Care Center Gainesville helped keep that promise. The next morning she was improving and safely in the care of a licensed wildlife rehab professional. I can't express enough gratitude for Florida Wildlife Care Center Gainesville's 24-hour Emergency service and the outcome. Ideally someone could have come to our home to pick up the marsupial the same day, but with the holiday weekend and a major hurricane (Dorian) pending everyone was already overwhelmed with responsibilities. Florida Wildlife Care Center Gainesville is the only group who came through for us. And they did so thoroughly, compassionately, and promptly. Thank you Florida Wildlife Care Center Gainesville and a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Jean in Clermont!!!

We brought our 15-year-old terrier to Haile Plantation Animal Clinic on Monday, August 10, after he…read morebecame extremely sick, stopped eating, and began breathing very slowly. Because of how much he was suffering, we made the heartbreaking decision to have him euthanized. We paid for an individual cremation and were specifically told that his ashes would be returned the following Monday, August 17. Based on that information, we believed he would be picked up and handled promptly. When I followed up on August 20 to ask if we could pick up his ashes since we hadn't heard anything, I was shocked to be told that the crematorium had only picked him up on Monday, August 17. That means our dog Riley apparently remained at the clinic for an entire week before even being transported for cremation. We received no phone call, no update, and no explanation that there had been any delay. Had we been told that our dog was going to remain there for a week, we absolutely would have made other arrangements. I would have personally transported him to the crematorium rather than leave him there for that length of time. What makes this even more upsetting is that we paid specifically for an individual cremation because it was extremely important to us that we receive our dog's ashes back. After being given incorrect information about the timeline, I am now left questioning the entire process and simply hoping that the ashes eventually returned to us are actually his. I understand that veterinary clinics may refrigerate or freeze remains while awaiting cremation. That is not the issue. The issue is that we were told his ashes would be back on August 17, when he apparently had not even left the clinic until that day. There is a major difference. When someone has just lost a pet they have loved for 15 years, communication, honesty, and respectful handling of their remains should be treated with the utmost importance. This was already an incredibly painful experience for our family, and the way this was handled made it significantly worse. We are extremely disappointed and offended by the lack of communication and transparency surrounding our dog's final arrangements by this clinic. Not to mention, we'll have to wait an additional week for him to be able to be picked up if they can even deliver on that promise, at this point, I have very little faith.

As part of the pickup, Abby took us to Lowe's for a walk-through so I could see Penny in a real-world setting around people, shopping carts, and all the normal distractions. I was honestly amazed. Penny was calm, confident, and engaged the whole time. The biggest difference wasn't just that she listened to commands--it was that she finally looked relaxed. Before training, she was so anxious that it often overshadowed her personality. Today I got to see the sweet, curious, happy dog I always knew was in there. One was dead by the time I got home. Today I bought three pajama cardinals. I drip acclimate everything, and partway through the drip, two of the three were clearly going downhill. Not ordinary settling-in stress, but failing. I called the store, explained what I was seeing, and they told me to bring them in. The diagnosis came quickly once I got there: my salinity was 1.019, and the fish had been shocked during acclimation. On that basis they credited me for one of the two dying fish and I absorbed the other. Store credit, not a refund. What bothers me is where the 1.019 came from. They tested the bag I'd carried the fish back in, and I had filled that bag from my own display tank. Same water, two readings: 1.019 on their instrument, 1.024 on my digital meter at home, calibrated before I used it. One of those numbers is wrong. That wasn't an academic disagreement. It decided who paid. Their reading put my tank out of range, so the loss became mine, and the portion they did cover came back as credit that only spends at the shop that sold me the fish. Three of five animals in two days, and an explanation resting on a measurement a calibrated meter contradicts. There are other places to buy livestock around Gainesville and I'll be using them.
