We initially signed up because it's a requirement to be married in a Catholic church. We ourselves are both Catholics, but we met other couples who are half Catholic/half non-Catholic, or those who are Catholics but do not follow the religion strictly. Although there is some components of Catholic teaching involved (like natural family planning and prayers before meals), it really was just about getting to know your significant better and to prepare ourselves for a life-long marriage. I think it should be a requirement for all couples, not just those who are married in the Church because these are really important topics that you should talk about prior to getting married. Some of such topics include: family values (from the family you were raised in and what you think you want for your future family), financial decisions, conflict resolution, communication guidelines, family planning. You both get a chance to write about each topic on your own and then share it with your partner. It's a good way to get everything down on paper and talk about it without one person talking over the other. I thought our two facilitator married couples were great too! We had Matt and Laura and Tim and Helen. They were great examples of people who went through a lot of challenges together as a married couple and has a lot of heartfelt stories to share. They do have a script that they prepare before hand but it's mainly to keep them on time. And they do go off-script too. The facility itself is well-kept and surprisingly quiet and peaceful in the middle of Citrus Heights. I felt like I was off somewhere in the woods, not in the city. We had simple bedrooms that we share with another partner of the same gender. We were also provided all the meals - and they were overall pretty good. Overall, my fiancee felt like it was such a blessing to be able to go over everything together. He said he felt "2000% sure" that he would marry me after that so I guess I got my money's worth lol! There is always scholarship support if you want to go but cannot afford the payment! So sign up and experience it before you get married :)

My fiance and I had a wonderful experience at Engaged Encounter and would recommend it to any…read moreengaged couple. The basic format goes like this: a married couple gives a talk on a certain topic and their experiences (examples of topics: communication, conflict resolution, starting a family, intimacy, etc) and then you separate from your partner and answer some prompts about the topic in your notebook. The questions are really open-ended, like "I feel the most connected to you when..." or "What will we teach our children about religion." After a few minutes answering the questions you go get your partner, read each other's answers, and talk about your answers together. Then you go back into the group room and they do another topic. You never have to share what you wrote or what you talked about with anyone else. There are a few group discussions and activities, but you are never forced to share. It's intense. You go from 7-10pm the first night, then after an 8am breakfast you go from about 9-12, then lunch, then 1-6, then dinner, then 7-10 on Saturday. The last day after breakfast you go from 9-12 and then there are a couple of closing things after lunch and then Mass. By the time we packed and said goodbye to a few people we ended up getting on the road at about 2:30pm the last day. Even though it's busy and there aren't really any breaks, it's not boring or tedious. My fiance and I actually ended up using our break to go over a topic that we didn't feel like we had enough time to discuss during its allotted session. I was a little worried that I would get bored or anxious because there's pretty much no technology. No TVs in the rooms, no phones or devices allowed (except in your room I suppose, but you're so tired at the end of the day you don't really wanna do anything but get to sleep), and not even a clock in your room! But it was nice. I didn't miss technology or outside distractions at all. We were kept busy the whole time and it was so nice to just focus on my fiance (and God, for those who are religious) for an entire weekend. It's a pretty relaxing environment. The grounds are pretty and peaceful and it's nice to explore during the downtime. We woke up early to exercise outside and took our short break outside and it was really nice. The food is fine, pretty simple. It's not fancy or creative or anything like that, but it's perfectly fine and they keep you well-fed. There was never a time when I thought "ugh, I can't eat that" or "ugh, how unhealthy." It was nice to be able to just walk in and eat, not have to cook or clean up after it. The rooms are simple, but comfortable. You will be in a room with twin beds with someone of the same sex. My fiance and I live together so being apart was weird, but we understand that this is a church thing so it was fine. The facilitators were really nice. There was one couple that had been married for like 40+ years and another that had been married for less than 10, and then there was a priest. They were all warm and open. Non-Catholics might be worried about the weekend being "preachy" or judgmental, but it was totally fine. We were worried because we live together and are in our 30s but there were all kinds of people there. There were couples with kids or on second marriages and the age range was like 19-50s. The lessons were pretty non-preachy. When they talked about sex, they would say things like "we encourage you to consider renewed chastity before the wedding" or "natural family planning is a great alternative to birth control" but never said things like "premarital sex is a sin!" or "stop using birth control!" The focus was much less about Catholic doctrine than it was about your decisions as a couple. Most couples I talked to had a better experience than they expected. It's really great to be able to talk to your fiance in detail about tough subjects. Even though you've probably already talked about a lot of the things they go over during the weekend, it's great to sit down and really hash things out and make sure you are on the same page. It's definitely one of those things that you get out of it what you put into it. We were really into it and tried to be as honest and thorough as possible. For us, it confirmed that we are totally ready for this lifelong commitment and made us feel closer than ever. It gave us tools to work on any rough areas. I also felt like if there were any problems, they would have come to light during the weekend, so I think it'd be good for any couples who are still figuring out whether they want to marry. It definitely makes you think about how big of a commitment marriage is. I would recommend it to any couple that is considering getting married. It is a better fit for Catholic or Christian couples, but even non-religious people can get a lot out of it. If you come into it with an open mind and open heart it may end up being one of the best things you do for your relationship.
