This four star hotel used to be nice, saying this, because I stayed there for two nights and used…read morealmost everything, from breakfast hall to SPA and gym. Firstly, the place needs renovation. Room's wall where dirty, corners chipped, no bathrobes or slippers. Tiles were missing in the gym and swimming pool area. Oe of showers in gym had missing parts, light bulb was hanging down from the ceilings in pool area. Many metal pieces were covered in rust. Some furniture was majorly covered in stains and other had holes in them. Secondly, forget about reliable WiFi signal. Just have your own mobile broadband to avoid issues. Thirdly, they did wedding party on the ground floor and we stayed on the second. At two o'clock in the morning we still couldn't sleep as the music was in full scale! Receptionist wouldn't do much, how could he, as people paid well for the wedding party with some assurance to have unlimited fun till specific time, I'd assume. Screw other - motto of theirs, I suspect. Lastly, SPA was terrible. Staff was late 10 mins. No one around to ask what's the story... Massages are mediocre and from my experience was less than mediocre, as my missus to do me neck massage after back massage in SPA. They had this "Feedback Form", but no pen to fill it out. I guess, there's a reason why... Breakfast was lovely. Bar staff is great as well. All staff is lovely I'd say. See pictures to understand what I meant here. Special thanks to a super nice receptionist Tara, she helped us a lot. I wouldn't pay a penny to stay in that hotel again.

Also, a weird tidbit about Ireland generally: all public pools will require you wear a bathing cap. Not our thing, which is too bad, because we booked the hotel in part because they had a pool. Restaurant was overpriced, but the steak was decent, Cajun Chicken salad was good, Chicken stir fry was decent. Pluses: Most comfortable bed we've slept in in all of Ireland. Room was a superior double, sizeable, clean, comfortable king-size bed, roomy shower, decent tv/cable. Jacuzzi in the health spa was a nice relaxation point, as was the steam room. Breakfast (we got the B&B package for one night) was the best Irish breakfast/buffet we've had. Reception was friendly (though the gentleman running it our first night was a bit clueless). Nice bar/lounging areas. It's in a non descript industrial park outside Athlone, but not far at all from town, which is an adorable port town on the Shannon. Really enjoyed our stay.

Recently stayed overnight at Cooney's Hotel, on the main street in Ballymahon, Co Longford - along…read morewith a group of about 15 other hardy walkers who were on the last stint of walking the Royal Canal from Dublin to Clondara Co Longford! We were all more than happy with the reception we got in Cooney's and what a deal - €55 per person for B & B and dinner. The rooms were amazingly large, well furnished, including a double plus a single bed in each room, sparkling white bed linen, TV, free wifi, the works! Really warm and cosy, but would only deduct points for waste of energy as the heating was left on all night and we couldn't turn off the radiator so had to leave a window open - when we reported this to reception the reply was that the 'weather was too cold to turn off the heating'! After a 19 km walk, a lovely warm soothing bath, we all enjoyed a wonderful old-fashioned Irish type dinner in the dining room (we were the only people dining that Monday night - although there appeared to be quite a few eating in the bar) - plenty on each course to choose from the owner/manager even gave us wine at a special price of €15 per bottle so who could argue with that! Breakfast the next morning had to be seen to be believed for a hotel that you would probably pass by it is so ordinary looking in the heart of the country!!.....what a choice and again several courses, ranging from a whole array of cereals, yogurts, porridge served with honey, cinnamon and cream, full and mini cooked breakfast, different types of eggs - I choose scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and did not expect to get such a huge separate serving of smoked salmon - but it did set me up for the day and the 14 km walk along the Royal Canal to our finishing spot where the Canal meets the Shannon at Clondara. If you are on your way to the West of Ireland and feel like a Midlands stop over or better again, spend a few days walking the Royal Canal around that area - drop into Cooneys and treat yourself to B & B and the evening meal!

It's a comfortable old shoe of a building, with some modern day polish. Bustling staff efficiently take care of you at reception or steer you into the dining room. There's always a carvery for lunch- which is always well attended. Given its location in the centre of the town square, parking is close at hand in the centre of the square. However, on a busy day these will fill up early in the day. We always stop there when travelling cross county - a handy and comfortable place to stop.

There was only one vending machine that was working and it wasn't fully stocked. The kitchen was closed. The late night desk clerk was nice enough to take us back to the employee vending machine just to get something to eat. I think it listed somewhere as a four-star hotel, but it didn't seem that it was actually four star and maybe more a three-star hotel but that might be the reason why they're updating and doing all the construction. They were doing quite a bit of construction which was badly needed to update the interior and exterior of this hotel. I was a little shocked at how outdated the room was regarding the fixtures and room treatments. It also smelled old and as if the dust settles often. I will say that the room was quite large but it was lacking in some of the main amenities that you would find in a more prestigious hotel. At the end of the day, it was an okay place just to rest for the night. The Wi-Fi was terrible and got worse the further down the hallway you got away from the central part of the hotel. We kept getting kicked off the Internet and maybe had one or two Wi-Fi bars sporadically throughout the evening. There aren't also a lot of places to eat around there and a lot of food delivery services don't deliver there either. It was nice to have free parking at least and like I said the night desk staff was really nice. The check out was easy as well.

The hotel and amenities were great! Clean, spacious rooms, pool/hot tub, restaurant, comfortable bar/lounge area. The surrounding town is small, but again, it was just what we were looking for on our journey. Loved it!

The front lobby, sitting area, coffee/Tea area, and restaurant areas were updated and very nice. The front staff very friendly. The room was outdated. Their is no luggage rack stand. So we had to use the counter. The rooms are small, flat screen tv was small, and you were not able to use your travel Outlet Converters because they would blow the fuses in the hotel. The beds and pillows were comfy. I believe once the rooms are renovated this will be a very nice hotel to stay on. The breakfast was really good. Everything we had was good. It was an Irish Breakfast and buffet style, pastries, yogurt, fruit, cereal, juices, and so forth.

This is a feature that carries on throughout the hotel, outside all of the meeting rooms there are nice large seating areas. I think this is great when you are at an event but you wanted a small mini meeting with another participant, gives you lots of room but privacy at the same time. I had to mention that first because it is the bit of the hotel that stands out the most to me. The conference rooms in the old part of this hotel are not great, most of them do not have any natural daylight which means you feel like you are stuck in a box not knowing what time of day it is if you don't have a watch and you have no idea what the weather is like outside, it's like they are trying to imitate casinos or something where they want you to stay longer! This has the totally opposite effect on me! The bedrooms in this hotel are okay, fairly standard nothing special to say here really. Hotel rooms can be so boring can't they!? oh one great thing is the fact that this is one of the few hotels that still gives shoe shine kits and sewing kits in the rooms, brilliant! The kitchen and waiting staff are really nice in this hotel and are very eager to please while you are dining. The reception and other staff however I have found are the total opposite, I thought that the reception staff were a bit untidy looking to start with (am I being too pernickety?) and when i had any requests they were not to helpful at all! ( i will say though the guy dedicated to ourevent was really great)At one particular event the heating in the room was mental, it was like being in the arctic one minute and then suddenly you were trekking through the Sahara, the reception staff were looking at me like I was a complete nuisance, maybe I was but we were not going to pay lots of money for an inferior room, no siree! There is a new wing to this hotel which i will get to test out later this month, hopefully it is better than the old part of the hotel, I hear it has natural light anyway, I'll be back with an updated review and hopefully la few more stars!
