Needless to say, I wasn't excited about the "famous" pizza when I first heard about it. But, the kids were hungry and we weren't about to head back up the hill to Mürren. I am glad we tried it: I think their pizza is good by at-home, large city standards and fantastic given the location! As far as food goes, I think the menu at the hostel is limited to pizza, but it is executed well and definitely worthwhile. In addition to the pizza, they have a small bar with two beers on tap: light and dark. While we were there, they were out of the dark, but their light was very drinkable and the local craft brews available in bottles are good as well. I had a hoppy amber that really hit the spot on our last evening in town. I think it was called "Two Jocks" As of this writing, you can get a cheese and tomato pizza for 16 CHF and can add up to 4 toppings for an additional 3 or so CHF. Even better, the pies are ready really quickly! I recommend using some of the chili oil on the tables if you want to spice things up a bit. Pizza and beer makes a great, no-brainer end of day meal after a long day of hiking around the area. They also have soft drinks and other harder stuff at the bar (Jack Daniel's, for instance). If you don't want to stay, you can order the pizza to go and eat it in your room. Just remember that pizzas are not typically served pre-cut in Europe, so you may need a knife if you're sharing :)

Only down side is there is one bathroom for everyone with 3 toilets and 3 showers. You also have to pay 1 frank to shower for 8 minutes of hot water because the hot water is limited up in the mountain! Lol. The views and location make up for everything! They have a free laundry room here as well and free billiards room. Also really good beer! 1/2 liter for $5 at the hostel bar. Cheaper than the brewery next door and it's the same beer.

The (dorm) price at 30 CHF is reasonable, but the dorm experience reminded me that it's also dependent on the guests, with etiquette and sleeping habits proving to be highly variable among the other guests. While that was a source of slight irritation to me, it also made me appreciate choosing the "upper" (loft-style) bunk in my room and focus on other aspects of the hostel's experience, including a wide-ranging worldly group of guests and the amusing reality of the longer you stay, the more senior you become, which was particularly apparent over the course of a weekend.

I don't recall how we found the listing, nor can I find a website for it, but I cannot say enough about this place. Describing it to people always leaves me sheepish because it inevitably sounds like I'm recounting an awesome dream. This place is part hostel, part music venue, part restaurant. part beach club, and part bar. Yes, I'm serious. My best friend and I would sleep in entirely comfortable, simple accommodations upstairs, and then upon waking, we'd spend the day jumping on the trampoline, floating in the lake, eating pizza [they had a pizza oven, of course], and sipping inexpensive cocktails. It happened that our stay coincided with the World Cup, so my soccer-fanatic travelmate could sit and watch the games on the big screen in the bar/music venue/restaurant. Honestly, that's how we spent 3 days. The hostel accommodations were entirely no-frills, but they were clean, comfortable, safe, and reasonably priced. (We slept with the windows open to capture the wonderful breeze off the lake, and one more we woke up to find a little lizard taking a snooze on an empty beer bottle that we'd left on the floor the night before. We named her Liz. I told the manager about the lizard and he seemed really embarrassed. Unduly so-- it just added to the charm of the place. And I'm not a nature girl!) The staff was unbelievably warm and friendly, and they encouraged us to relax and just have fun. There was a sense of "nothing must, anything can", and "il dolce di far niente"-- quite a departure from Milan and Rome. If I find myself back in Como, and I can't score a room in George Clooney's villa, I plan on staying at La Vespa again, even if my youth hostel days are long gone. Haters gonna hate, but there's something ecstatic about jumping on a trampoline with Lake Como and the Alps as a backdrop, waiting for your pizza to be baked.

The reception annex bar, annex breakfast room has a terrace with a view on the Como lake / valley. The place is over a hundred years old and used to be the weekend getaway for the wealthy from Milan, Turin etc. Pro's: The price for a double room is sweet. The ambiance at first glance is great and authentic. The view is priceless. The folks are of the kindest you've ever seen. The food is good and the wine's great and not expensive. Con's: The ambiance can be turned up a notch by lighting some candles or the fireplace in the reception area. And please put on some Italian background music. The shared bathrooms and toilets upstairs are not in sync with the "authentic" part of the Hostel. They turn "authentic' into old and fairly crappish, The rooms are sober, but without the ambiance. Fix this, and you'll get 4 stars from me :-) And you can hear the neighbors breathe... which I find adding to the flavour, and my girlfriend doesn't. The hostel has a fitness center and a pool on premise which guests can use for an additional fee. The hostel is located a 2 minute walk from the local bus terminal, making it a very easy place to stay. It is also located near a number of local skiing/ hiking trails. The rooms are simple but functional. Note that the town does not allow large cars but has remote parking for gas cars and a number of miniature local buses, which adds to the adorable small-town feel.
