We ordered take out on New Year's Eve, and when we called at 5:30 pm, they told us they were overwhelmed and we'd have to call back as they couldn't tell us when our order would be ready by. We had to pick up a few last minute bits from the supermarket, so we decided to drop in and order in person. Thankfully, this was the right move as we heard them tell people the same thing over the phone that they weren't taking anymore orders right now. The restaurant was packed with diners, and they told us our order would be ready in 2 hours at 8 pm which was fine. When our family arrived for pickup though they had to wait, so we think everything was just made right then which at least meant everything was piping hot and freshly made. For the 5 of us, we ordered Deep Fried Chili Chicken, Duck & Plum, Beef Ho Fun Dry Noodles, 2 Fried Rices, Salt & Pepper Chips and 1 order of chips. The bill was 35 pounds. While the food was good, the portions were a bit small. We definitely could have used one more dish for the 5 of us. I'm American, so it's a bit weird to me to order fries with Chinese food, but apparently that's a big deal here and a must. The order of chips was incredibly dinky. The order of salt & pepper chips was a bigger portion though (though my family still thought it was small, but the regular chips just came in a tiny little paper bag). The salt & pepper chips were really good though and they were probably my favorite dish I tried. The noodles needed a bit more flavor, but I do like a thick wide noodle, so that part was nice. We ordered them dry, so maybe that wasn't the go-to move here. I added a dash of soy sauce which was okay. I wanted to love this dish since I love noodles, but this was just okay/good. The duck dish was crispy and my sister-in-law said that was her favorite dish. It wasn't saucy; it wasn't what I expected, but it was okay/good. The chili chicken dish was definitely better than other similar dishes I've had in the UK. This is my sibling-in-laws go-to-dish, so I've had several iterations and they are always too sickly sweet. Thankfully, this one was not and it wasn't terribly saucy either. I liked the crispiness of the chicken, but because of the sauce it loses a bit of that crunch factor. If my husband and I were just ordering, I probably wouldn't choose this dish, but it was still ok/good. The same goes for the duck dish -- these aren't the type of dishes I'd typically get, but both were pretty alright. The fried rice was pretty standard and basic. No complaints, but no compliments either. I really liked the seasoning of the salt & pepper chips which was like a vinegar sauce with chillies. I loved this dish and I'd order this again. Anyway, I haven't been terribly impressed with Chinese food in general in the north, but this was one of the better versions I've had in the area and I definitely would be happy to order take away from here again (there's not loads of options in this area and it's definitely one of the better options).

Heck, this place does good Oriental fare, with some delicious Cantonese and Peking options and it's certainly a calming and relaxing place to be with all its minimalist white decor, again not something you see a lot of in Chinese restaurants. Still, someone's got to buck the paper lampshade trend, although all that white around such sticky sauces made me rather nervous. I didn't want to feel like a little piggy. Especially with lobster around. You might not think it's easy to get to but if you stop off at Old Roan station (assuming you're travelling by train), it's right nearby and only a five minute brisk walk from Aintree racecourse itself. The restaurant is a fairly young one, the service swell, and the owner well-renowned. I'd give it a flutter if I were you.

This is probably the worst place to get fish 'n' chips 'n' Chinese in the whole of Formby, it's not terrible especially - there are just far better places out there (see how I refrained manfully from using 'plaices'). What Crispy Cod Formby does very, very well is kebabs and burgers - this might seem odd for somewhere that so prides itself on fish that it puts the name of a fish that it doesn't in fact serve up in backlit plastic, but there it is. Donner or chicken, 'Hawaiian' (served with pineapple ring - exotic) or 'king' (served with an egg - regal) the kebabs and burgers are the reason to get takeaway from here. Just avoid the pizzas, fish and chip shop selling pizzas; it's just a step too far. It's just wrong man. Just wrong.

I also distinctly remember the owner, who always sported a cap and an absolutely excellent moustache (the skill of moustache grooming is a fine art). This establishment has since changed hands however and the change was not a particularly positive one in my opinion. The chips they do are average and the portions compared to their rivals are pretty small, plus they serve you chips in a little tray which kind of spoils the whole chips-wrapped-up-in-paper thing (it's just not the same when you have a tray supporting them, they should just slip everywhere as you struggle to eat them). They also do the usual Chinese dishes, burgers (which are pretty good, actually), kebabs and pizzas. I generally avoid getting things like kebabs and pizzas in chippies though, I feel that they are best left to proper kebab and pizza shops because when chippies have their fingers in too many pies, they usually end up doing everything a bit crap rather than excelling at a few things. I'm quite a fan of the fish tank in there though; thankfully, they don't put its contents in the deep fat fryer (far too small).

If you're in Formby village and you want some chips rather than the freeze dried yellowy stalks you get at Flames then try James's. Get a pint in the Cross House beer garden and bring some over with you, it's only just a couple of minutes away. If anyone at the Cross House asks, I didn't say that. The rest of their menu can be a little variable, the beef and green peppers is good but the special fried rice is really not special; unless special means bad, which it doesn't. The sausages are decent but the fishcakes here are sadly lacking. Most importantly the fish is a bit of a damp squib, well actually it's probably pollock, but either way it doesn't really hit the mark. The chips, though - out of this world. Everything else, ironically, is really only a side order.

This was mainly due to it having the best chips in Formby, as well as offering ridiculously large portions for the price of a normal portion of chips. Recently however, I feel the quality of the chips has fallen and now a portion of chips is 50% chips and 50% crispy bits from the bottom, which I'm not so keen on. The fish is similarly disappointing, with the batter to fish ratio resulting in an unsatisfactory accompaniment to your chips. The fishcakes however remain the best in Formby, with the potatoey delights providing an excellent foil to a pint in the nearby Village Inn, as one friend of mine will testify. I've never had a chance to sample their Chinese dishes, but the menu is extensive, ensuring even the fussiest diner could find a meal they fancy. In terms of value for money with the portions you get, James's is recommended but if you want the best fish and chips, I would go somewhere else.
