The Golden Castle - Sweet & Sour Pork dish

More of a takeaway then a restaurant, this place really is a find. I remember fondly a time the…read moreChinese takeaway was something you truly looked forward to. However over the years it really is become a saturated market. These days it seems anyone who's anyone is trying to cash in on the idea that a Chinese takeaway just sells. The results are that a truly fine Chinese takeaway is oh so hard to find. The secret in finding a great Chinese takeaway actually comes from (other than a yelp review that is....) picking out a family run business. While this isn't an air tight theory it does hold some weight, mainly from experience. Golden castle is one such example. What's more they are on Just-Eat.co.uk a website that really has taken off with more and more takeaways jumping on the virtual bandwagon. Just order online as you do with your dominoes etc sit back and start watching that blockbuster movie waiting for your piping hot food to arrive. Chamon!!

Tai Pan Chinese Restaurant - lobster with "yee mein"

I was in Liverpool to spend some time with family friends after visiting London. We planned to have…read moredinner here and supposedly is one of the better Chinese restaurants in Liverpool. The parking lot is quite large, so lots of parking spots available. There is also a supermarket located in the basement floor of the restaurant. Upon entering, I noticed it looked a bit dated. All of the lights are probably very, incredibly dusty... most likely hasn't been cleaned since the day they opened. Lots of lights, but still managed to have very dim lighting. We went for the 8 course dinner set, which you can choose 8 dishes to get out of the many dishes they offer for this set. Let me preface first that I am from Boston and definitely have had New England/Maine lobster BUT I honestly never realized how good our lobsters are. The ginger scallion stir fried lobster with yee mein was a generous portion, but taste wise I couldn't get down with it. The lobster has a bad aftertaste that kind of just lingers & the yee mein was not actually even yee mein... plus could've been more flavorful. The best dishes I found they had were the duck & the soup. I think it's quite difficult to mess up on both those dishes though, to be frank. The worst dish I had here was the chicken. Everyone at our table agreed that it was extremely dry & barely edible. Cleanliness: One thing that I am always looking for and super mindful of when I first sit down to eat at a restaurant is how clean are their utensils? How clean are the plates & bowls? etc. Plates were pretty dirty, bowls were fine for soup, & utensils-- it is a good thing they do single use wooden chopsticks. Overall, their food is not great but also good Chinese food in England is either really hard to find or doesn't exist. The Chinatown in Liverpool is a ghost town and looks abandoned , so my guess is that good, authentic Chinese food must be rare to come by.

One of the regular Chinese restaurants I go to with my parents for Sunday "yum cha". Yum Cha…read moreliterally translated means drink tea. Its usually means having dim sum. Although we usually have more than just dim sum - ordering a few as well. Whether its a rice dish, noodle dish, maybe some veg too. The quality is always pretty good and the food comes quick. The restaurant has a car park which is handy as well as the large Chinese supermarket on the ground floor.

We'd heard good things about this restaurant, so when the family wanted Chinese takeaway, I was…read moreready to try this place over the old standby staple Tree View, which I really don't care for. We ordered take out on New Year's Eve, and when we called at 5:30 pm, they told us they were overwhelmed and we'd have to call back as they couldn't tell us when our order would be ready by. We had to pick up a few last minute bits from the supermarket, so we decided to drop in and order in person. Thankfully, this was the right move as we heard them tell people the same thing over the phone that they weren't taking anymore orders right now. The restaurant was packed with diners, and they told us our order would be ready in 2 hours at 8 pm which was fine. When our family arrived for pickup though they had to wait, so we think everything was just made right then which at least meant everything was piping hot and freshly made. For the 5 of us, we ordered Deep Fried Chili Chicken, Duck & Plum, Beef Ho Fun Dry Noodles, 2 Fried Rices, Salt & Pepper Chips and 1 order of chips. The bill was 35 pounds. While the food was good, the portions were a bit small. We definitely could have used one more dish for the 5 of us. I'm American, so it's a bit weird to me to order fries with Chinese food, but apparently that's a big deal here and a must. The order of chips was incredibly dinky. The order of salt & pepper chips was a bigger portion though (though my family still thought it was small, but the regular chips just came in a tiny little paper bag). The salt & pepper chips were really good though and they were probably my favorite dish I tried. The noodles needed a bit more flavor, but I do like a thick wide noodle, so that part was nice. We ordered them dry, so maybe that wasn't the go-to move here. I added a dash of soy sauce which was okay. I wanted to love this dish since I love noodles, but this was just okay/good. The duck dish was crispy and my sister-in-law said that was her favorite dish. It wasn't saucy; it wasn't what I expected, but it was okay/good. The chili chicken dish was definitely better than other similar dishes I've had in the UK. This is my sibling-in-laws go-to-dish, so I've had several iterations and they are always too sickly sweet. Thankfully, this one was not and it wasn't terribly saucy either. I liked the crispiness of the chicken, but because of the sauce it loses a bit of that crunch factor. If my husband and I were just ordering, I probably wouldn't choose this dish, but it was still ok/good. The same goes for the duck dish -- these aren't the type of dishes I'd typically get, but both were pretty alright. The fried rice was pretty standard and basic. No complaints, but no compliments either. I really liked the seasoning of the salt & pepper chips which was like a vinegar sauce with chillies. I loved this dish and I'd order this again. Anyway, I haven't been terribly impressed with Chinese food in general in the north, but this was one of the better versions I've had in the area and I definitely would be happy to order take away from here again (there's not loads of options in this area and it's definitely one of the better options).

Near Liverpool's foremost racecourse wouldn't necessarily be somewhere you'd imagine a Chinese…read morerestaurant would reside, and rather than being frequented by people of its same ethnic background it's rumoured that the owners of the prestigious 60 Hope Street restaurant enjoy some scran in there - Gary and Colin Manning, to be precise. Heck, this place does good Oriental fare, with some delicious Cantonese and Peking options and it's certainly a calming and relaxing place to be with all its minimalist white decor, again not something you see a lot of in Chinese restaurants. Still, someone's got to buck the paper lampshade trend, although all that white around such sticky sauces made me rather nervous. I didn't want to feel like a little piggy. Especially with lobster around. You might not think it's easy to get to but if you stop off at Old Roan station (assuming you're travelling by train), it's right nearby and only a five minute brisk walk from Aintree racecourse itself. The restaurant is a fairly young one, the service swell, and the owner well-renowned. I'd give it a flutter if I were you.
