My taxes are pretty complicated since I have to file in multiple states. That coupled with the new…read moretax laws means that there was no way I was going to attempt to do my taxes myself. I called Dominion early in January and was able to get a spot as a new client. (I later learned that they only open a few new client spots every year, so I recommend trying them in December or January if you want to get a spot.) I called the morning of my appointment to make sure they were still open, since a snowstorm had canceled schools and many local business closed for the day. Not only was Dominion still open, but they were able to move my appointment to earlier in the day since other clients had canceled. As soon as Carson was done with his previous appointment, he welcomed me back to his office and we started going through the paperwork. Carson was so great. It's clear that he is extremely familiar with the tax code and entered all my paperwork quickly. He helped me access some additional information online when we realized I needed an additional piece of real estate paperwork. He even explained some deductions that we were eligible for that I was unaware of and allowed me to submit that paperwork later after I collected the necessary information at home. Perhaps the most amazing part of all of it is that Dominion only charges a $150 flat fee for your personal taxes. I thought for sure it would be like one of these chain tax places where the base rate only applies if you are filing in one state or have a single W-2. Their price is more than fair to know that your taxes are done right and you are getting as many deductions as possible based on your individual situation. I'll definitely be back next year!

My taxes are pretty simple but he entertained my questions with great care and patience. I didnt feel rushed and he was able to e-file my taxes the following day. Laureen has done them the last couple years, and is a real pleasure to work with. In the years past we've used other Liberty offices due to our location, and have always been very pleased.

For eight years, my wife and I used Liberty Tax in Burke, VA, with satisfaction. We appreciated…read moretheir responsiveness, customer service, and integrity under Monique M.'s ownership. However, this year's experience under new ownership was a complete disaster prompting us to switch tax preparers permanently. On February 14th we contacted Liberty Tax via email to file our personal and two business returns. They promptly replied with a link to upload our documents, which we did on February 18th, confirming via email. They acknowledged receipt on February 21st, stating a preparer would contact us soon. Unfortunately, that's where things went downhill. Despite no contact, I emailed them in March as the business tax deadline approached. No response. I called repeatedly, leaving voicemails, but received no call back. Finally, on March 15th (the business tax deadline!), I spoke to someone (Lily) to inquire about our business and personal returns. She initially couldn't find our documents but eventually informed me Bryan was working on our personal return, while Annette handled business returns. I requested to speak with Annette but was unable to. I ended up scheduling a call on April 2nd with Annette. However, she never called us. I called the office after waiting 10mins. I was put on hold, and then was told Annette just got out of a meeting and would call me back. She never called back and I called the office after waiting for an additional 1hr. I ended up speaking to Jame who stated he and Annette were working on my business returns but needed two more documents. I obtained them promptly from our CPA (who clarified these weren't necessary to file) and sent them to Liberty Tax. Despite follow-up calls, I received no updates on either our personal or business returns. Emails went unanswered as well. On April 15th (tax day) Bryan contacted me regarding our personal return. He stated he was wrapping up our personal returns and working on one of my business returns. I'm not sure how he was "wrapping up" our personal return as this was our first time speaking to him. He sent us a draft personal return that he asked us to review an sign so he can efile by the deadline. However, upon review there were several inaccuracies, missing business information, and it showed a state tax obligation. I pointed out the errors and explained the missing business return information. Since our business returns affected our personal return, we couldn't e-file. Bryan proposed filing an extension, which we agreed to. He couldn't confirm if our business extensions were filed. Also surprisingly, when I requested for a K-1 for my business partner after all returns were filed, he didn't know whether I provide it or if Liberty Tax provides it (tax preparers provides this document). On the same day, Lily called to file a $100 personal return extension fee. My wife and I questioned the charge due to their negligence and lack of communication. Lily waived the fee but mentioned the state tax payment due by May 1st, which we handled ourselves. We also emailed for updates on the business returns but received no response. After a week of silence following the extension filing, we contacted them again, leaving unanswered voicemails. Finally, on April 24th, an anonymous sender from Liberty tax emailed us (cc'ing Bryan, James and Annette), stating Bryan informed everyone that he was pending me and my wife's signature to efile (even though I explained to Bryan why we couldn't sign) . Also, anonymous sender stated they would review the documents we provided and see what else was needed with Annette and James. We never received the promised list of requirements. I promptly responded addressing my concerns about my returns and the lack of communication. I never received a phone call or email after my reply. Disappointed and frustrated, we contacted a new CPA/tax preparer. They were shocked by our experience and completed both our personal and business returns in two weeks. We received a state refund instead of the tax obligation Liberty Tax communicated, and most importantly, our new preparer discovered Liberty Tax never filed the business extensions, potentially leading to nearly $1,000 in penalties per business. Thankfully, they filed a penalty abatement waiver with the IRS. If you're considering Liberty Tax in Burke, VA, we strongly urge you to look elsewhere. We wouldn't want anyone to experience the lack of professionalism, communication, negligence, competence, and integrity we encountered.

H&R Block - Confirmed my appointment the day of, but they had already canceled me and gave my appointment time to someone else without notifying me

H&R Block

Pretty disappointed in the series of events that occurred here. This was our first time using H&R…read moreblock. Things seemed somewhat simple, we didn't have any issues making an appointment. Greeted first thing, we were taken back to a desk. I had everything prepared/labeled/organized and necessary calculations. We sat there as our tax advisor entered everything into a computer and waited. The amount we owed for Federal and State at the end of it was incredibly daunting. We paid the obnoxious $650 and then additional $40 for the premium in case there were amendments/audits etc. We went home, I immediately paid my taxes but it was my fault that I didn't run through the completed forms first before doing so. After reviewing, I noticed an error that put our federal taxed at $6k less than what we actually owed and our state at a refund instead of a $850 payment. I called and she corrected it and resent it but then I had noticed there was also a mistake on my rental income property. She corrected and re-filed the amendment. I called corporate and complained about the $700 we paid for our taxes to be wrong, for how much we mistakenly owed on federal and state taxes and for all the mistakes after. Looking through the charges, we were charged for a form that they had also mistakenly totaled for expenses on a rental property. H&R block said they would correct everything and try and put in a refund for the wrong charge. The person they assigned to correct it didn't give me a call the day corporate mentioned and followed up on a Monday after the weekend saying that the person assigned became super busy and they assigned someone else. That person gave me a call and went through everything. Corporate said they're expediting the refund of the H&R block charge. Received an email indicating the refund needed to be accepted. None of the credentials worked and now that payment is now locked and if we don't accept it in 2 weeks, it will expire. It is not available in the My Block profile app. I should have definitely checked my tax forms but to have a tax professional get so many items incorrect, overcharge us for getting something so important wrong, making refunds as difficult as possible and ultimately causing us to overpay federal and state, I will not be using H&R Block ever again

The day of the appointment I get a text message to confirm my appointment (which I did) and even got a confirmation message back that my appointment was at 11- when I get to the place I'm told that my appointment was canceled because I didn't answer my phone... and that my appointment time wasn't available anymore but that I could wait... Still trying to find the logic of getting a confirmation text the day of, if they had already canceled my appointment? The girl at the desk just kept repeating that I didn't answer my phone to confirm the appointment- horrible customer service.
