Our first session started with an intake where she asked a series of questions to understand my life history, what I was seeking help with, and how acupuncture could help. I was skeptical at first because I've always relied on western medicine and pills to cure things I struggled with. Immediately after my first session I spent the day feeling incredibly relaxed and at peace. The feelings lasted for about 2-3 days after each session. Initially I signed up for 5 sessions and after that I continued to see her because of the mental health benefits. The chronic stomach pain turned out to be a stone in my bile duct that was left over from a gallbladder surgery. Although acupuncture could not directly help out with the physical pain, it helped me indirectly by providing mental health benefits such as peacefulness, meditation, and tranquility. These health benefits helped me in my mental and emotional battle against the physical stomach pain while I sought doctors for the procedure to remove the stone. Dr. Joyce's techniques, compassion and skills are also helping me overcome the depression I had from the chronic stomach pain. I am learning new techniques to manage my anxiety attacks as well. I was recommended to Joyce by my boss who has been receiving acupuncture for some time now. Upon her suggestion, I sought the help of Joyce after experiencing a heinous rash brought about by an allergic reaction to a medication I was taking. I was informed that acupuncture was a miracle worker for a wide range of skin issues and decided to give it a try. Treatment involved needles at specific points to promote circulation, as well as eucalyptus oils intended to soothe the inflammation and relieve the itching. Let's just say, the effects were instantaneous! I immediately began to feel the itching subside, and the tension I was experiencing along my torso also began to wane. I was sent home with specific instructions on what foods to avoid, along with a bottle of eucalyptus oil to try in place of Benadryl. I wish I could experience everlasting acupuncture at Joyce Acupuncture. I'd be rid of all ailments, physical and mental, and I'd savor the peaceful, profound solitude I experience during my visits. I had my first acupuncture session yesterday. I have advanced degenerative back disease, stenosis, sciatica, acute spasms, L1 compression fracture deformity, lumbar scoliosis, and in constant pain from an injury I sustained in 2000. Sometimes the compression, spasms, and overall pain in my neck and back are so severe that it becomes difficult to breathe normally, or even walk, sit lay down or stand. I also suffer from leg cramping and numbness in both my hands and feet. Joyce is a highly qualified professional in her field, and took her time to get to know what my issues were before performing her magic. I walked in with a pain level of 8 on a scale from 1-10, and walked out with a pain level of 4. I am now able to walk up and down stairs without holding on to the rails. I originally sought out Joyce's services for a very pragmatic reason -- I needed to use leftover Flex Dollars through my insurance. I didn't have a particular ailment, so I thought I could focus on stress, anxiety and fatigue (doesn't every NY-er have this? :) I was also feeling the effects of the winter blues and felt it could help improve my mood. For my first appointment, Joyce assessed that my liver should be treated. This was really interesting because I was born with infant jaundice. My stress and mood have noticeably improved after just a few sessions. Due to previous injuries to my neck and back , my orthopedic surgeon suggested I try acupuncture as a part of my treatment plan. Normally I would take supplements and herbs then maybe see a regular doctor.
