When it was slow, the meat could be a bit dry and veg a bit overcooked from sitting under the heat lamps. But even at its busiest times, the queue went very quickly, so don't let it being busy put you off. This was a very family-friendly place to go, as there was always a highchair available (although they could do with bein kept cleaner), and the layout of the place, along with the general hum of other customers meant you rarely overheard the other tables or felt as if your noisy toddlers were bothering anyone. Toby Carverys aren't going to set the world on fire, but this one will certainly provide you a good, solid, hearty meal at a ridiculously low price. Our clumsiness of grabbing a table and figuring out whether we needed to go to the bar to order or wait to be served, surely gave us away as "not locals." Our server was friendly and provided us with our menus and took our drinks order. The one shortfall was that the menu had a number of items not available and with an assist from a customer, two of us needed a rethink on their meal. In all, it was 4 Fish & Chips, One Farmhouse Burger, and a Battered Halloumi burger, plus an order of calamari, and 4 tomato and garlic soups. There were zero plates taken off the table that were not empty! I had the Halloumi burger, which had a great, crispy batter topped with some guacamole mayo with a red sauce on the side. Really good. Then we doubled down and hit the dessert menu! Two warm chocolate brownies with salted caramel ice cream and four plum tarts. We asked for some custard on the side because who doesn't like custard?! The semicircular bar immediately came into view as we walked through the doors. I was pleased to find some UK craft beers on tap in addition to the usual Fuller's Brewery offerings. One of the best brews I had earlier that week in London, Beavertown's Gamma Ray (American Pale Ale), was available and I ordered it with enthusiasm. The hoppy and juicy brew tasted as great as I remembered! We grabbed a cozy booth near the front window and enjoyed entertaining conversation with the birthday girl for hours to come. I ended the night with an English take on the American IPA, Electric Bear Brewing Co's Livewire, and it was solid as well. The Market Stores played a nice soundtrack of '90s jams which our group fully appreciated and danced in our seats to. Overall, this is a wonderful pub to grab a pint and the large crowd that showed up on a chilly Friday night fully confirmed this.
