Driving to Houston from San Antonio and was craving Mexican and didn't feel like eating at taco bell. Found this on yelp on a search what's in the near by town. This is a great fine, nice little mexican restaurant. walked in around 11am and it was not busy. one hour later and it was busy (lunch time) wait staff looked stressed they were dealing with people inside the restaurant / taking orders on the phone / drive through. Food wise is okay, nothing wow'ed me at all the chips and salsa were okay, salsa is a bit too hot the food was just average. I wanted to get what they are known for so i ordered their special and special of the day. Prices are good. eh.... it was okay, it did satisfied my mexican food craving. will i stop there again, yes, unless i'm craving taco bell. read more

I don't know how this place got 4.1 stars. This was the worst food we've ever eaten. I tried calling them to tell them how bad our food was and it was busy the first few times, and the next few times it just rang and rang. The meat was so dried out that we couldn't even cut it. We couldn't chew the pork chops, that were really small and thin, or the fajita meat. The beans looked and tasted like they sat under a heat lamp all day. They were so dry I don't know why we even tried to eat them. We will never buy food from here again. We're really disappointed as this restaurant is close to us and we were hoping it would be a good place to go for dinner. read more

I am a regular here as I pass through Flatonia a few times a week. So, I thought I owed them a review. Here's the deal. This is where you go for good Mexican food. Being where it is, and having no real competition, San Jose could just serve some nuked garbage and charge whatever. Instead, they serve good portions at a good price and the food is fresh and delicious. It's as if you have come into their home for a meal. There are no frills here. It's just a place to eat good food. The staff is attentive and service is pretty quick. The tortillas are probably the best I've ever had. Salsa is hit or miss. The parking lot and the hand dryer suck. If you want an upscale cliche' place with music and cheesy sombreros and cactus sculptures, just skip it. If you want to be satisfied, you won't go wrong here. I recommend the mixed fajita plate. Enjoy! read more

Seated at a table near the kitchen, I watched our waiter clean out the refrigerator with a bucket of water and a filthy rag - over twenty minutes I waited and watched the nastiest, most disgusting filth get pulled from the fridge, then he gets up, grabs our food, and brings it on over. Cute little family owned restaurant. Prices are reasonable & everyone is so friendly. If you are looking for a good Mexican restaurant on the stretch from Houston to San Antonio, this place is definitely worth it. Not fancy by any means but it's guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds. Right next to Joel's BBQ (which I haven't tried). Wouldn't mind stopping here again on the next trip. :) read more

While waiting for my beef fajita burrito, I hear my server making inputs on a microwave. Moments later, I hear the microwave door open and the server brought me my food. Worst dining experience we've had in months. We travel a lot and we aren't hard to please, and it was pretty bad for me to actually review it. Walked in to about four tables occupied and all of the remaining six tables dirty with dishes still on them. The waitress said, "Sit wherever you want. " I said, "There is nowhere to sit. " She said, "You sit and I clean for you. " She did this to the next several people who walked in after us too. Then we had to get up and get our own menus. We ordered queso but never got it. The hot sauce has no flavor- only a liquid burn. Chips are good. We both ordered puffy tacos which sat up on the kitchen ledge for almost five minutes before they were brought to us, and since they were served on top of the refried beans, were too soggy to pick up. Fajita beef was ok, but shredded chicken literally had less flavor than regular boiled chicken. All around us we could see the disgust in the eyes of the other patrons enduring the same things as us. Conclusion: You're much better off at Joel's bbq next door, or McDonald's across the interstate, and that's coming from someone who hates fast food. read more

On our way from San Antonio to Houston, we needed to eat and saw the sign for San Jose Mexican Restaurant. We arrived about 10:30 so the breakfast menu was still available. I ordered the Spanish omelet and my husband ordered the chorizo and egg scramble. Mine came with toast and a hashbrown patty. I would have preferred the homemade tortillas and potato hash that came with my husband's meal. However, the omelet was amazing! We both enjoyed our meals immensely! read more

Travelling back from an amazing birthday trip to New Braunfels with my gf. We stopped here and it was between joel's bbq and San Jose Resturant. The coin chose very well. The food came out very hot. Had to let it cool. We got a combo plate that had enchildas, tamale, rice/beans, tostada, and a taco. All were packed with flavorful meat, freshly made, and served with a smile. The decor isn't the typical stereotrypical TEX-mex. It is definatley shows a humble family resturant. A great find and plan to stop there everytime I make my way out west on i10. read more

This place totally surprised us! The tortillas reminded me of the thin pancakes my mother made growing up! They are absolutely the best I've ever had! If only I could have had a margarita. The staff was fantastic and the food was literally outstanding for a hole in the wall off of the interstate! We were so blown away with the Barbacoa taco and carne guisada taco. I will be stopping there each time I head to SA from Houston!! But really, a mean marg would put this place on the map for everyone!! read more

Prices have gone up but food quality has stayed the same. For the prices they have now we instead to to Roberts Steakhouse down the road for better food. The bathrooms never seem to smell or look completely clean. The younger waitresses are always friendly however. And the barbacoa is always too notch. read more

Our family of 6 had been driving many hours from New Orleans back to San Antonio at the end of our recent family vacation. It was getting late--it would be too late for dinner by the time we got to San Antonio, and my husband and I needed Tex-Mex. There is nothing better than New Orleans food, but we always love to end our family vacations with a little Mexican food. I had been stranded about a year ago at the San Jose Mexican Restaurant for a couple of hours while I waited for a thunderstorm to pass through after a business trip to Houston, and I thought the food was really good. So the San Jose Mexican Restaurant came to mind when we were trying to think of a place to end our trip with Tex Mex. Our party of 6 seated ourselves at a big table at the front of this family-owned restaurant and ordered the basics--cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, tortillas, and chalupas. The waitress was prompt with good chips and hot sauce, and our entrees were hot, cheesy goodness. The flour tortillas are huge, hot and very fresh. If you find yourself hungry on this stretch of I-10, don't head for fast-food. Stop here. You'll be glad you did! read more

This was our first time here and it was great. Amazing customer service, we were welcome right away and our order was taken right away. We order coffee and we didn't have to ask them to refill they just came and did it without asking! The food was delicious and I do recommend people to stop by and try this place out! read more

Stopped here on our way from San Antonio to Houston and saw this place on yelp. Small place and did take little while because it was packed. Only complaint is one canned drink is $1.25. Food is awesome! Had chicken, shrimp and beef fajitas. Beef was tender and lean. Not excessively greasy, yay! Beans were incredible and home cooked!! Cheese dip was made with American cheese but still decent. Great little GEM right off I10. So glad we decided to stop; just wish it was closer to Louisiana! Stop here and you won't be disappointed. Went there for lunch during the week. Place was pretty full but the service was good and relatively fast. Hot sauce was good and hot. They refilled our chips twice and gave us our won bottle of hot sauce to refill our bowl. Lunch special was large and included a soft drink or tea. Not fancy just standard fair. Definitely will go back. read more
