There aren't many options for plus sized clothing in York besides Lane Bryant, so I'll drive the extra distance just to find clothing that isn't made for 40 year old women. I am 20 years old, after all. Torrid carries sizes 12-28, and their clothing is what I would describe as alternative chic. In case you didn't know, Torrid was created by Hot Topic for plus sized women specifically. First of all, the staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their brand and it's sizing systems. A staff member helped me find the perfect jeans, which is absolutely unheard of for me. They were all warm and considerate, and kept checking on me while I was trying on numerous items of clothing and taking pictures. I was never once treated rudely, and their staff followed the practice of watching the customer but only butting in when the customer asks questions or looks confused. It makes the shopping experience better, because most other stores treat me like I'm stealing if I spend a significant amount of time there, or they follow me around and comment on each item I even look at. Torrid's clothing is trendy yet also made for comfort. I can't imagine trying on something of theirs and feeling like I have to take it off right away. They had everything you can imagine from sweaters, dresses, skirts, jeans, lingerie, shoes, jewelry, fragrances and more. Unfortunately I can not fit into their lingerie due to needing a larger bra size than what they stock, but I tried some of it on anyway and it was very comfortable and made me feel sexy despite being the complete wrong size for me. Their prices were slightly high for certain items, but other items were very reasonably priced. My favorite part of the store were the fitting rooms. When you walk into the fitting room area, you're greeted with a huge space with chandeliers, leopard print carpet, amazing lighting, and huge mirrors. This area is also air conditioned. When you go into an individual fitting room, it's very spacious, very well lit, has a huge mirror, and a fan up in the corner that you can control as you please. I've had the feeling of being hot, cramped, and sweaty in way too many fitting rooms in the past. Torrid's fitting rooms made me feel comfortable and important. They truly thought of every detail to make the fitting room experience a positive one for plus sized women, rather than just throwing together a fitting room area like Lane Bryant (where I've always been drenched in sweat as I try on jeans and sweaters). I love the fact that there's now a good plus size store in this part of Pennsylvania, because it's been long overdue. If you're plus size and want to be treated like a Princess, go to Torrid as soon as possible.

I'm not usually one to shop and pay retail but there's a backstory…read more Found a pair of great fitting jeans at a thrift store. The fit was so perfect (and I have a hard shape to fit, skinny legs, thick waist) that I googled the label in hopes of finding more on ebay. The brand is Westport and the logo says W62 - so if you ever see this brand in your thrift store travels scoop them up! Anyway..... Low and behold they carry these jeans at Dress Barn. I do own a few Dress Barn labels from my thrifting scores but never pants. That fit was so perfect I had to go and get more and it was perfect timing too because I just happened to get Tanger Outlet coupons in the mail - double score! I called the store and described what was on the label of the jeans I had and she quickly found a pair and put them at the counter for a 24 hour hold. $29.99 (on sale) is still a bit more than I like to spend, even with the 25% Tanger but that fit.... All I can say is I walked out with not one, not two, not three, but FOUR pairs of this great jeans, all for a whopping $40!!! And that total includes a scarf! How you ask when they were $29.99 a piece? Well.....they had some sales racks in the back and I can never walk past a sales rack. Turns out they had the same jeans, same size only in petite on clearance (which actually fit even better) combined with my 25% Tanger coupon. The $40 total also included a great infinity scarf I found on clearance in the 70% section. Actually there was quite the collection of clearance items for 30%, 50, and & 70% off. Love me some clearance racks!!! Aside from the clearance racks the regular priced items were very fashionable and they had plus sizes in the same styles as misses. I loved the majority of clothes they had and any of the pieces could easily fit nicely in my wardrobe for casual and business, but not at those prices. Not that they were bad, they were just...well, retail, and um I don't pay retail, hence the 4 instead of 5 star rating. The two sales gals were wonderful as well, one even worked there for 20 years, that's unheard of in retail. The dressing rooms were clean and well lit. Overall the store had a nice flow and pretty displays that made it hard to walk away (must.remember.I.don't.pay.retail). One thing is for sure...I will be back, and often, to check those clearance racks!

Interestingly enough, I have never once purchased clothing from Lane Bryant for a multitude of reasons. I have purchased their lingerie in the past, but never in a LB storefront. I don't know if this is universal or if it's just my location, but I feel nervous when I enter a Lane Bryant because I know a staff member will follow me around the store and comment on every single thing I look at to make me buy it. It comes of as fake, and like they're driven by sales rather than customer satisfaction. I know this is probably true, but I've had the best experiences in stores where they let me look around by myself, but will offer assistance if needed. Another issue with their sales practices is that they'll keep focusing on the promotion they have going on at the time, even if I'm not interested in what that promotion is regarding. For example, I kept getting harassed about their jeans even though I don't like their jeans and wanted to find a dress for a wedding. They also pretty much force me to try on bras during bra sales even though my bra size is larger than what they carry and I've told them I'm not interested. The entire thing comes off as pushy, and makes me feel uncomfortable giving them any of my money. Their clothing can also tend to be exorbitantly expensive despite the poor quality of their items. I wouldn't mind paying $60 for a babydoll (lingerie) if the straps wouldn't tear the second I put it on despite being a decent size for me. If I look at their websites right now, their sweaters range from $50 to a staggering $198 for a cheaply made sweater that is neither stylish nor comfortable. When I could fit into their bras and thought they were my only option, it was a frequent occurrence for me to have to go back and replace bras that stretched out prematurely, had broken underwires, pulled out hooks, or other unpleasant things that shouldn't happen with brand new bras. I've since found better brands to shop from, and I've never had a problem with the longevity of my bras. I've had bras in my collection for a year and a half, but I'd only ever get 2-3 months out of a Lane Bryant bra at the same price point (about $60). In my experience of trying on Lane Bryant clothing, I've found that very few options actually fit a "fat" woman well. This defeats the purpose of having a plus size store if the clothes don't look good on the women shopping there. I always leave a Lane Bryant sweaty and embarrassed that I can't make anything look good on me, and I can't search the store for better options because the staff will hound me. Another gripe I have with Lane Bryant is their #ImNoAngel and Real Women Dollars campaigns. At it's core, it sounds like a good thing that promotes body positivity, but when you look deeper it's not. #ImNoAngel is a direct stab at the Victoria's Secret Angels, and Real Women Dollars is implying that thin women can't be attractive or sexy. All women are real women. Ordinarily I'd ignore something like this, but it's a little difficult when #ImNoAngel merchandise and promotional images are all over the store. I also take issue with #ImNoAngel because the women in the images do not represent the average Lane Bryant shopper. They're claiming to celebrate diversity while they only show one cookie cutter body type in their advertisements. It definitely makes me feel like I don't belong there. If you like the idea of a plus size store that will provide a good experience, head on over to Torrid at Park City mall. It's fantastic and does for plus size women what Lane Bryant never has.
