Gracie Sports USA Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Training session in the books

Gracie Sports USA Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

I highly recommend trying jiu jitsu - and find a place where you feel safe and you find your jiu…read morejitsu "family" - that place for me is Gracie Sports USA BJJ. I started back in 2006 in the original location with Marcio Stambowsky - the master at Gracie Sports. Marcio is an excellent friend and mentor who immediately makes you feel welcome. Professor Deborah, Marcio's daughter also teaches at the academy and brings many years of knowledge and experience. All the teachers there are amazing and the kids program is phenomenal as well. Whenever we are early for class - we watch the little kids roll and fight with the same techniques as the adults - it's great to see the quality of the education! Marcio is an 8th degree coral belt and one of the "Famous Five" black belts under Rolls Gracie. His knowledge is vast and deeply layered; it takes time to see that - but it's worth putting in the time! You can only get better! There are two locations - Norwalk across from Costco, and Fairfield near the shops downtown. Jiu Jitsu really helped me get out of my stagnant routine and "off the couch". I don't know if I would even be here today - I was 300 pounds and constantly had internal pains and health issues. I dropped 60 pounds since then and compete between 238-255. I'm still going strong at brown belt and it's my favorite thing to do - we all need something that is for "us" and sometimes you can share that with family members. I see a few couples train together and even have the kids enrolled. Jiu jitsu is awesome - and Gracie Sports USA is the awesomest! Give it a try - join today!

They are all rock stars in their own right and our family is so incredibly excited to have stumbled into this gem of a BJJ studio. Our son is a 11 y/o hockey player. He has always been looking for his second sport only this time it found him. My husband brought our kid in for a sampler lesson and oh-my-god it was love at first take-down. Instant addiction. This is THE place to be. Every single instructor is so on top of everything. They are awesome possum people who are gentle, informative, interactive, FUN, and everything you could ever want for your kid all rolled into one. I honestly cannot say enough good things about these folks. You can tell they are a family - and they humbly welcome you in. I wish I could give more than 5 stars. And I also wish we had found them sooner!

I was great right away by the girl at the first desk (I'm sorry I can't remember her name ). She helped get me situated and told me what to expect. Because this was my first time I had no clothes (jiu zitsu robe or pants). I believe it was the owners daughter who helped me out right away along with the other lady get ready. Just the friendliness they showed helped me put my guard down alittle more. As we started i can't lie I could not do half the warm-ups that they were doing but once again the girls helped me get right through it. When I started my training the other guy helped me and one other person and he was so sweet and really amazing! I have went to free trials of many other gyms such as title boxing in Milford, UFC fighting in Norwalk and right off the bat they make you feel like they just want your money and once you are unsure about joining they become a little rude and then give you a cold shoulder. This particular training facility didn't. Everybody including the teachers were VERY patient, VERY HUMBLE and just accepting. I may have been sore after and exhausted but I learned so much in 1 hour and actually had fun. I will be signing up and hopefully within the next few months I can be in a higher belt! I highly recommend this facility and will recommend this facility to my family and friends! eu amo ele e estara de volta!

I spent years at Radius Martial Arts training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with some of the best teammates I…read morecould ask for, including Travis, who is now the owner. It's not hard to find a martial arts school that has an owner with a black belt or even a decorated competitive past, but it IS hard to find an owner that cares about his students as much as Travis does. Radius is a welcoming environment. It's not the size of a warehouse like a UFC gym might be, and it doesn't try to be all things for all people. It's a martial arts school that prides itself on honor, discipline, respect, and of course, hard work. Old or young, tall or short, man or woman, it doesn't matter. Radius has programs that fit your needs and your schedule. That's the great thing about martial arts (and BJJ specifically, which I'm partial to)--it doesn't lend itself to one type of person or body style. It's for everyone. If you're looking for a martial arts school in the Fairfield County area that will welcome you with open arms and focuses on disciplines that are effective and useful (and not just a money grab), then Radius is the place.

Ever since going to this gym 5 years ago I have had a laundry list of health problems. I have two…read moreherniated discs which started while training here and eventually got worse, one in my back and one in my neck. I also had at least 2 minor concussions here. The one that stands out most was when sparring an overeager new student. I literally fell over and people here hardly cared or noticed. Some of them were fine just hitting me hard in the head after it happened or just throwing me to the ground repeatedly as I did half speed kicks, even the person who knocked me down decided to swing for the fences again that same day. I have a pretty high pain tolerance and I probably didn't fully even know how hurt I was but I still think it was a little overkill and just weird to go after someone who is already obviously hurt. It's sparring not a fight. I made sure to write all this down after it happened because it was definitely not normal for this to happen at places like these. It was basically a beginner level class with some more advanced students if I remember correctly. Not a place where getting knocked out is common. I know how this sounds, it's a contact sport and stuff happens and I would have been fine with that and probably accepted it and moved on. However, the main problem is when I tried to speak to the owner several times, and one of the instructors once I did not have a good experience. I won't go into too much detail but I was accused of lying about my injuries, I was gaslit, asked if I was autistic multiple times, or they just made jokes or didn't take me seriously. The owner also thought I was a bully for hitting people hard in sparring when I was also frequently getting hit hard. The spars/rolls/clinching was often so over the top that my back literally gave out and I started to develop issues I've never had before. This place deserves a 1 star review not so much for the injuries but for being so scummy about it. If someone gets a bad injury at least be respectful about it. Would have been appreciated. The owner and anyone working for him really should take a hard look at themselves if this sort of behavior is still going on here. If someone has a complaint or concern, taking it seriously would be a good place to start. The owner also tries to get reviews deleted so I'm posting this on yelp cause it got deleted on google.

I personally have always been a fan of weight lifting and strength training but going to the Fit Club classes such as the "body shock" and "ultimate fitness" where they always mix it up and usually it involves circuit training, alternating with body weight exercises and actual weights- I have been experiencing far more intense workouts then when I used to train on my own. I've always loved working out but I've never been able to Push as hard on my own as when I'm being instructed in the classes. Oh! I finally began to join the cardio boxing classes there too! I was way too shy/nervous/intimidated at first to do this but finally gave in cause it looked so fun. I'm a total convert. Now my favorite classes are the boxing! I get such an insane workout and I have such a good time, the instructors are awesome and I love the music! Everyone who goes to this gym is so friendly and it's such a wide range of people who come in, age, fitness level, etc that l can't see anyone walking in and feeling out of place. Also, I sometimes go into the gym when there's not a class going on just to do acro-yoga and play and do my own workouts.
