Island Club Apartments - mold that began to grow on my clipboard

    Island Club Apartments

We were sent a move-in letter, stating that our move-in day was May 5th, 2018. We were greeted in a…read morevery rude manner and both Crystal (the "property manager") and Shelby (the "office assistant") looked very surprised by the fact that we were there. Shelby told us the 5th was okay to move in; however, never communicated that to Crystal, and so, they didn't have an apartment ready for us (although they pretended that they did). Shelby took us to a dirty apartment that had not been cleaned and was saturated with the smell of cigarette smoke. I asked if this was the only apartment available and she reassured me that it was. (I would later have a family member call the office, only to find that there were several available apartments at that time). I began wiping all the cabinets and fixtures, which were all covered in a thick, yellow residue from the previous tenant smoking inside. We also found old clothes that the previous tenant left behind, remnants of food in the kitchen, and dead bugs everywhere. All of our items began to reek of cigarette smoke. My coworkers actually complained of how badly I smelled of smoke. Crystal's solution to our problem was to bring a fogger into our apartment and fog the place out to get rid of the cigarette smoke smell. They attempted to come in to our apartment and FOG THE PLACE WHILE OUR ANIMALS WERE INSIDE! We were finally moved to a new unit, which we later discovered it had a serious mold issue. All of our belongings began growing mold! When we moved out, we ended up throwing the majority of our things away, as they had all grown mold spores. When Joe, the maintenance man arrived, he was incredibly rude and told us that our cat was drinking from her water fountain and dripping water throughout the apartment, and that's why we had mold (hard to believe someone would suggest this, I know). We eventually realized the A/C unit, which is located behind the walls, had been leaking water for months. We finally realized this hidden issue when we woke up to a small pond in our hallway. When you report a problem, you'll be ASSIGNED instead of asked a time that maintenance can enter your unit. If this day/time doesn't work for you, expect to receive a response similar to, "Well the truth is if you have issues with the apartment and you keep complaining of these issues it must not be that serious if you continue to keep rescheduling." So if you work Monday-Friday 9-5, don't dare "complain" of MOLD in your apartment. Not everyone can be available 24/7 for your sketchy, cigarette smoking maintenance crew. Some of us have REAL JOBS. As if this place couldn't get any worse, I was rather embarrassed when my family (including my nine year old sister) came to visit and went to use the pool. During their time at the pool, two young residents entered the pool area with glass beer bottles and began drinking beer and smoking pot at the pool. Mind you, drug deals are not an uncommon occurrence on Island Club property. I suggest closing all windows after dark, as there are usually fights in the parking lot, and revving of engines and motorcycles until 2am. In addition, there are a plethora of wild animals living on the property, probably because the dumpsters overflow with garbage weekly. This may also be the reason for the cockroach issue, for which they will insist on coming into your apartment to spray chemicals once a month. So, if you have pets, be prepared to have to "accommodate" them with less than 24 hours notice. The online portal that is used for monthly payments never works. I ended up writing a cashier's check for the remainder of our five month rent, so I wouldn't have to deal with these incompetent, careless people ever again. I left the accounting department seven messages. I called the senior accountant and left a message and I called Crystal's boss, Kathy, and left a message. No one returned my phone calls. The lack of concern and professionalism is baffling. This is the worst place I've ever lived and I wouldn't recommend Island Club to anyone.

There were little odds and ends that aggravated us but our main issues came after we moved out. We…read morereceived a bill for over 1K for carpet replacement. We are actively disputing it. We have asked for proof of damage and no one seems to be able to provide it. We did have an inspection prior to move out but no one once said anything to us about the carpets. Maybe it's not normal for them to bring it up but we wouldn't be waiting for proof if we were shown the damages. The carpets were not damaged other than normal wear and tear we regularly shampooed them due to having a dog and a toddler who loves to play on the floor. Other than that the only other thing we would have liked to know about prior to signing our lease was that they have a roach issue. I was taken back that the pest guy said they normally only spray the living room and the kitchen. We finally had to ask him to spray the remaining parts of the apartment, and thankfully he did but within the following week they were back so we had to buy stuff out of pocket to keep them out as much as possible. The other issue we had was the people above us were super loud all throughout the night and had lots of people in and out of their apartment staying for long periods of time. We said something about this to the office and they sent a notice out but of course that made things even worst like they were being louder on purpose at this point. Our 4 year old was scared to sleep in her bedroom because the stomping scared her. Our entire apartment smelled like pot although we don't smoke ourselves. Our daughter often complained about the smell. We addressed this with the office as well but basically said they couldn't help because they didn't know where it was coming from. I addressed the no smoking rule in their lease agreement that states no one should smoke in the apartment or throughout the entire complex but was told I was mistaken they only have one non smoking complex. Although I have the contract we signed that has it listed as no smoking lease addendum. Then again their lease also states there is a breed restriction at the apartment complex but it is not followed either. Not that it matter to me about the breeds but wanting to enforce rules but not others seems unprofessional to me. Its a great option if your in a bind but not sure the value of what we received is worth the rent we paid. We also had an issue when they removed the countertops looked like black mold from the moisture or water damage previously. They were just gonna put the new countertops over it till I made a big deal about it then they said they tested it which the person who was there in the apartment when the work was being done said they didn't. Their fix was spraying bleach on it to treat it and then without scrubbing or wiping it they just put the new countertop over it. My advice if you come here take pictures and request walk through during move out process. Also watch your bills we found a couple of errors although the office was nice enough to fix those even though it took a few emails and office visits before it was completed.

The management is a revolving door, so you never build rapport with anyone. Maintenance and outdoor upkeep are a joke, dog waste piles up and overflows in the dog park, and the pool didn't even open until after July 4th. Repairs? Be prepared to wait months. The office never follows through on anything. I waited 4 months to have my unreliable stove replaced and they just patched it! When I reported my neighbors smoking weed in their townhouse, the woman in the office was rude, dismissive, and blew me off over the phone. Meanwhile, I'm forced to deal with my bathroom smelling like a hotbox because of their habits. I hate living here and cannot wait to move. Do yourself a favor: choose literally any other apartment complex. Even paying more is worth it. And if it's owned by Capono, RUN!!!

My wife and I have had the WORST experience trying to get into one of their apartments. We read the reviews and were naive enough to think it wouldn't happen to us. I tried staying the course because the 3-bed apt we wanted is beautiful, but in the end, I regret it since I had to deal with such mindless humans who couldn't do basic arithmetic, kept giving us different answers, and clearly had no idea what they were doing. Take my advice and STEER CLEAR from this community unless you're okay with dealing with such an incompetent front office. Michelle, specifically, is rude, condescending, will yell at you, and hang up while you're mid-sentence. Save yourself the headache and don't even consider moving here.

I would've never signed a lease if I knew it would be like this. The Wi-Fi is basically nonexistent. I'm paying $1,200 for rent, just to end up using my own data because the internet constantly crashes. On top of that, they suggest you use an app for split rent payments, but you also have to subscribe and pay another $14.99 every month. And the staff? Please, get the kids out of the office and put some respectable adults in there. The way they carry attitudes is crazy, especially when they signed up for this job. The drainage in the kitchen sink is awful,no garbage disposal, so food builds up and water doesn't drain properly. This apartment may look nice, but it's a complete waste of money. If you're a Salisbury student looking for housing, do yourself a favor and avoid The Ross at all costs. You'll save money and a major headache. The Ross, do better. If you're going to charge what you do, at least make sure the accommodations actually work.

We left a maintenance request for the leaks and they were supposedly fixed, but there are still continuous leaks throughout the apartments exposed piping. Because of these Leaks my roommate's closet is filled with black mold. We have been reporting the leaks to maintenance and We have reported the black mold four times. So far all that has been done is the mold has been removed and painted over. We believe that the mold is spread throughout the building because of the continuous leaks in our apartment and in others apartments. Our entire apartment smells like mold, all of our clothes smell like mold, and our whole floor smells like mold. My roommate who lives in the most exposed room has been sick for three weeks. We have two cats that live in this apartment being exposed to black mold every day. On top of all of this our rent has been raised $200. I would not recommend living in this apartment building.
