Nice clean market with lots of frozen meat options. Some local wines, cheeses and candies as well. Priced a little on the higher side for some items and very high for convent items. They do have a pretty cheap lunch special running most days. Staff was friendly and asked if I needed any help. read more

Well, not so fun day. I dropped off a deer on Oct 7 (first thing in the morning), they have two guys in front of us with some beef. One of the animals being delivered was way to big to fit through the chute. They put the large animal down in the receiving area and commenced to fork lift and winch it through the chute, (rather disgusting even to the other farmers delivering beef to be process After two hours of beef being handled, they took our Deer in and put it on the locker next to two gut bins, as the agent was explaining how the big animal was all his "F" up. Now 10 days after dropping off our deer, I called to find out the status of the processing. I will say I was not rude just asking how long for a basic grind and loins with Backstraps NO SAUSAGE or roast, just all grind with 25% pork (@ $5/lb). the receptionist could not answer any questions so she got Chris on the phone, I was told I was being rude, and the deer will be done when Chris calls me. I did ask how long they take to process game meat, and she HUNG UP on me. I took my receipt and went to Johnson's and they refused to give me my deer. Chris snatched the receipt out of my hands crumble it up and through it in the garbage, I told her "You can't do that!" then she asked me to leave and threatened to call the police... TOO LATE. I called 911! I did not get my deer back from them. I am convinced they spoiled it! Enter RIo Police department. no luck with them having their hands tied. so, I asked the CHIEF OF Police (He said he was) if he would site them for Blocking the HANDICAP PARKING, at this point I was getting a little petty, but Obviously they are in VIOLATION The officer flat out told me he did not know if he could site them for blocking a DESIGNATED HANDICAP SPOT... Stopped by here on a trip up north to pick up some brats as they had coupons in the Bucky Book. We ended up getting a large variety of gyro, smoked cajun, chicken, cranberry, poblano, and garlic and herb brats. So far we have only tried the gyro brats, but they were definitely well received. They have a very different flavor than your standard brat, and our friends commented that they had never heard of a gyro brat. They were made of lamb and had a little bit of a subdued flavor compared to a standard gyro, but still very tasty. The brat itself was also a little more dense than a normal brat. Based off of how good the first variety was, I can't wait to try more! read more

Absolutely horrible customer service. Told me she didn't need customer service because she had "so many customers" she didn't need to be polite. She said her freezer space was more valuable than her customers. Threatened to sell our beef and force us to still pay the farmer. Not the first time we've had issues either. We will not be going back and will be alerting the farmer to our dissatisfaction, and will not buy the beef from him if we have to deal with Johnson's to get it. Been lied to repeatedly on the phone about the dates I can bring my steer in. Called six months ahead to schedule was given a date and then got screwed when the day came to bring 4 of them in. Called again to reschedule as instructed by Chris the owner and got the run around again. After 8 phone conversations that have gone nowhere, I won't waste my time with this group. Over promise and under deliver should be there new slogan. Will not be calling/using Johnson's again. DONE!!! read more

Their sausage is excellent, but their customer service is so bad it is not worth it. They claim they are too busy to get clarity on an order if it is not clear, so now I am just stuck with what they decided to give me instead of what I wanted. read more

I just picked my processed beef from there, and so far everything is good in that department; However, do NOT pay with a debit card there!!!! They attached a $4.85 "service charge" to my bill, without a forewarning!! The irony is that I had the cash ($121.50) for the processing charge, but I always try to use my debit card. When I called and complained, the only excuse they could gave me is that is what their bank charges them....Won't be going back there.... read more

My husband is a hunter. We eat meat. We've had Johnson's process venison, pork, and beef for us. The pork and beef were custom-processed for us (we know a guy who gets the meat for us from around the area). Everything has always been just as ordered, and the various employees I've dealt with on the phone (ordering up the meat) and in person (paying and loading into the vehicle) have been very polite (and occasionally chatty, which my stay-at-home self appreciates). The meat is vacuum sealed in plastic (a different place we patronized a while ago used butcher paper, which made for a few bloody messes while thawing in the fridge). The place used to be very industrial with a tiny little storefront that had some deli coolers with meat and cheese, but they've upgraded in a huge way. Now it's basically a grocery store with a meat locker attached. It's nice, and the much larger parking lot is appreciated, too. Having your meat custom-processed isn't cheap, but for the quality and convenience it can't be beat. read more

I just kindly called this place and asked if their meat was locally sourced. The woman that answered the phone impulsively lashed out at me and went on an endless tirade and told me off. She was full of rage and yelling so fast and so loud that I couldn't make out everything she was saying but it was vicious and insulting. There was absolutely nothing in my question that should have triggered such and insane tirade. She literally scared the heck out of me. I wasn't expecting that and she totally caught me off guard. Order A whole hog almost 8 weeks ago. Was promised a it in 3-4 WEEKS! Was placed on a list in the order that they were received. Still no hog. Still no timeline. Rude as hell on the phone. Chris(owner) not even considering a refund or partial refund. Bad enough she inflated the prices due to the pandemic to take advantage of people...I live in Rio, WI and this woman's reputation has been crap for years by most locals...you can now add me to the list! Small local sausage company has a nice variey of tasty sausages from cheddar brats to polish, italian and house specialties. Fat plump sausages come in $5 packages of 5 each and are TASTY. I always stop here and bring some home frozen. You can also get venison, elk and occasionally other game here - as steaks, ground, or made into sausages. Many local hunters bring their game here for butchering and packaging. They also sell a small selection of Wisconsin cheeses and preserves which they do not make, but are nice complements to the meats. read more

Took about 5 months to get our processed game back. Quality and service have both gone down since moving to the new store. I would not return here to have meat processed. The wieners are almost inedible. Brats are precooked. read more

One of the worst experiences I've ever had was with this butcher! We had a slaughter date scheduled for 8 months, they cancelled the.night before without explanation. They pushed us back 2 months (mind you the beef was finished and ready). We had a second date for different cows 2 weeks later. They cancelled again and pushed those out 2 months. They assured me this was the for sure dare and it would not change. The day before the rescheduled date we called to confirm. They said they were too busy with deer and rescheduled for the following week. The following week they decided to not slaughter and said we could reschedule for a month out. When I talked to the owner and explained that we had to cancel on our buyer's 3 times she accused me of yelling at her. I said I was not and she replied, "You farmers want to complain, well I could sit and complain too" and told me to go ahead and find another place. So, we did. It's ironic that we are supposed to support small businesses but then the small business doesn't care about the small farms. So frustrated. This place is clearly not able to efficiently run their business. They overbook and are mismanaged. Do not use them! read more

I received 50% to 52% of the hanging weight of my steer and hog that I brought in. I was told no, no, you did get the correct amount. Chris is a nice lady but I was taken advantage of, everyone I talked to told me I got screwed over. I am not one for complaining but after further review; I took a similar hog and steer to another butcher and I received 72% and 74% of the hanging weight with the same cuts of meat. Find another place to go to. My trust was ruined with this place and I won't be back or recommend them to anyone. Clean facility though. read more

I took 2 deer in to Johnson's - one in bow season (Oct 2013) and one in gun season (Nov 2013). I have called 12 times, talked to the owner Chris 3 times, with NO call backs and still have no deer or my money back that I paid in FULL. I went there tonight and the owner told me "Sit the FUCK down" and when I told her no she said "Shut the FUCK up". My boyfriend shot about a 2 to 3 year old buck we took it to Johnsons to be have it all made into stew meet except for the back straps when they called and said it was done we got there and they only gave us 16 pounds of meat and the back straps were of a fawn, we argued with them and they said that they must of got it mixed up and that her brother was going out hunting and that she would give us the meat that was missing we never got a call from them so we called them and never got a response back. I would not recommend taking your deer or anything else there they are crooks and you will really be disappointed in there service read more

We stumbled across the Johnson's Sausage Shoppe on the way home from the Wisconsin Dells. Now we go out of our way to get there. It is the best sausage, bacon, and roasts we have ever had. The German Spannkferkel roast is to DIE FOR. The service is good, friendly people there to answer any question you may have. I will continue to shop there and recommend them to everyone read more

My family has used a handful of meat processors over the years and decided to go back to Johnson's this year after using a different processor for the past few years. We were impressed with the storefront and the friendliness of the staff. However, we were not very impressed when it came to the quality of the processing (we had a few deer processed at the same time) or the price. Not sure what the issue was, but for some reason Johnson's was not able to get as much meat into the cuts we requested as processors we have used in the past. They were also much pricier than other processors in the area. It is nice to support a local business, but there are others out there that will do a better job for much cheaper. read more

How long do I have to wait for my sausage? Dropped off 10/31/13. Was reassured it would be ready by 12/1/13. Due to smokehouse fire not all was done. Was told by owner, Chris Johnson, that it would be sent to me before Christmas. After numerous unreturned calls, Jerry told me today that remaining order has not even been started. Oh and I only get to Jerry after being on hold for Chris when she answers and says, "I'll send your order when it's done." And hangs up. Really need to work on customer service skills. read more

I helped a friend last week with her canned meat she received from this establishment. She had 20 lbs to can and when I opened the packages I was shocked. I swear the meat came right from the dumpster. Three hours later we sorted 5 lbs of waste from the meat. All the meat was front leg trim and neck and rib trim. We are confident we did not receive the back strap meat, the roasts meat, or steak meat. I trusted Johnson's to give us "our" deer meat and not the trim from all the hunter's in southern Wisconsin. We took photos of 2 inch pieces of cartilage we segregated along with the grizzle, sinew, hair, and dirt. Yes....Dirt. We posted the photos on Facebook and within minutes the owners had them removed. I called and spoke to Chris (spelling?) and was bashed with obscenities and threats of legal action. Hey, this is social media, you use it, I put the truth out there. First let me say it hurts writing this review. I had been going to Johnson's for 20+ years. I have never been to another processor in my 30 years of hunting and have always enjoyed the level of professionally processed venison. This is not the case any longer and will never step foot in this establishment again. I am trophy whitetail hunter and have multiple deer under my belt in the Pope and Young category. I say this not to credit myself but to explain that I understand sizing of deer and in particular, body size. The most recent deer I left at Johnson's was an extremely average 3.5 year old buck. Absolutely nothing special about the size of the body and in fact my daughter took a 2.5 year old deer and it was noticeably larger. The scam here is that you are told you have shot a "giant" whitetail and the levels of processing and meat are grossly exaggerated. In this case I was not asked how many pounds of the sausage and or sticks I would like so Johnson's took it upon themselves to convert basically my entire "giant" deer into sausage and sticks as this is by far the most expensive category of processing. When presented a $750.00 bill for processing a deer I about fell over. I had never spent more than 200.00 so I called of course. Management listed and said they would work with me. When the owner (Chris) got involved this was not the case. I was told that she could not help that I shot a "giant" whitetail and how would I like to pay. I of course tried to reason with her and she said i I could not afford it we could break the payments up, I could pay with a couple checks and credit card payments. Basically a payment plan for meat. Insulting! When I then tried to reason with her again she told me I was to pay in full or she would report me to the DNR for deer abandonment. When I asked the what the ramifications were for that she told me it was like leaving a deer in the ditch and i would loose my hunting privileges for (2) years and a get a $500.00 fine. This flowed from her like this had happened several times in the past. The owner was rude, and extremely bullish in her attach and mind you this took place the middle of her store. At that point i decided to let this go as her the (2) employees that were standing next to us look extremely uncomfortable. I do accept some responsibility in this situation by the way and offered to pay half of this unbelievable bill and this was not acceptable. In the end I got (6) boxes of veneson. (60) pounds of sausage, (60) pounds of sticks, (6) pounds of jerky along with the back straps and tenderloins. So roughly 135 pounds of meat. Way more than any one deer could produce in the minds of not just me but all of the established hunters I brought this up to. The overwhelming consensus is that sausage is being added to your order for bulk weight processing increases and most would never know. Beware of this as it is very easy to do. In the end I will never step foot in this building again which is a shame. I have (4) hunters in my immediate family and the business they lost over something like this is substantial. Horrible experience to be treated like that and take advantage of. read more
