Carmel Montessori Academy & Children's House

From the moment you arrive, you can tell that children are meant to belong here--not just attend. The outdoor space is incredible. Children spend a large portion of their day outside, exploring nature, tending to the land, and learning through real experiences rather than worksheets. There are live animals both on the property and thoughtfully incorporated into the classroom environment, giving children daily opportunities to care for other living beings and develop empathy, responsibility, and curiosity in the most natural way. The Montessori philosophy is practiced in its truest form. Learning is child-led, hands-on, and deeply respectful of each child's pace and interests. Teachers act as guides, carefully observing and supporting rather than directing, and it shows in how confident, capable, and engaged the children are. What truly sets this place apart is the sense of community. Weekly field trips extend learning beyond the classroom, and regular community dances, plays, and shared feasts bring families together in meaningful ways. These gatherings feel intentional and joyful, fostering connection not only among the children but among parents and educators as well. This is not a typical school--it's a place where children learn how to live in the world with confidence, kindness, and wonder. If you're looking for a genuine Montessori experience rooted in nature, community, and respect for childhood, this is it.

They've formed genuine connections with teachers and peers, learned at their own pace, and grown into confident, empathetic individuals. My husband and I are in complete agreement that this was the BEST decision we have ever made on behalf of our daughter. And the best kept secret of the western suburbs -- well worth the 30 minute commute each way for us. She has always been a good student but we felt she wasn't getting the social support she needed at the crowded, academic heavy public school. We also observed her imagination and boundless creativity being stifled by the rigorous academic schedule. She began struggling with doing homework and completing writing assignments. She became stressed out and even depressed in the evenings and started begging me to let her stay home. She never wanted to go to school and would often cry before and after. We made the difficult decision to transfer her mid-year which was a rocky transition but within a couple weeks, we started to see our joyful daughter come back to us. Now she LOVES school and can't wait to go. The school seems to awaken a love of life and nature in the children and a genuine curiosity. She is constantly over-flowing with ideas and asking questions about the world around her. She decided, on her own, to stop watching TV and playing video games! She told me that she has more important things to do with her time. She is busy constantly writing stories, playing imaginary games in her room, exploring outside, jumping rope, singing and even enjoys doing chores around the house. (!) Four Winds does much less academic work in the classroom than public schools. The 2nd graders a little behind on reading but I'm confident they will catch up. It's whole child education. So lots of fine art and outdoor play. As a result Four Winds kids are eager to learn - they learn quickly and retain information easily. In the spring they learned an entire 30 minute play in verse. It was pages and pages of poetic dialogue and they presented it beautifully. My daughter still knows the lines perfectly. I would even venture to say they are ahead in math. My daughter learned and grasped the concept of multiplication and division in one day! She rattled a few tables off in the car on the way home...I couldn't believe it. I could honestly go on and on about all the things that make this school exceptional. Their spiritual, loving, calm, patient and whole child approach just works. The kids are the proof. When you tour the school, talk to the kids...you will see what I mean.

The teachers were so loving and caring ,and the kindergarten and class rooms so warm and beautiful. But most importantly, children are allowed to be children. They engage in age appropriate activities and the child's imagination is fostered at all times. Beautiful school, beautiful people, and a philosophy that makes sense.

The school is gorgeous, clean, and we so appreciate that they have a ZONO device that kills germs on hard to clean toys. In comparison to other daycares my daughters have attended, they come home sick significant less. More importantly, we love the teachers and admin at KLA: Ms. Tiffany has been my 4 year old's teacher from the very beginning. She is down to earth, fun, and really connects with the kids. When I asked my daughter who her best friend was the other day, one of the 3 people she listed included Ms. Tiffany. My 4 year old is very shy but over time has opened up a lot more at school and improved her social skills with the help of Ms. Tiffany. Ms. Lisa is my 2 year old's teacher. She has young children of her own and she treats my daughter as one of own. I can tell how much she cares for and looks after my little one. Ms. Melissa is the art teacher - she works with all the children at KLA. She is incredibly nice, creative, and genuinely cares about the wellbeing of the kids. Ms. Heather is the principal. She is very responsive to parents and has been a pleasure to work the past 7 months. Martial arts and music class is part of the curriculum. I am also impressed by the Spanish exposure the kids get. My 2 yr old surprised me one day when she started counting her toys in Spanish without being prompted. My older daughter has attended 5 different daycares, and by far we have been the most impressed with KLA. I never worry about the quality of care my girls get while I'm at work. Thank you KLA of Naperville for all that you do!

They treated us like family from the moment we walked through the door. The teachers genuinely care about the kids and go out of their way to make the adjustment easy for them. Our son loved going there and we knew he was in good hands- a peace of mind that is truly invaluable. They foster a true quest for knowledge and community in these kiddos! Ms. Selvei was so kind, sharing her own experiences with the transition to daycare and calming our new-parent nerves. Ms. Melissa, would make a special effort to check on our son and say "hi". She was always so friendly and smiley, it put our son at ease. Ms. Maggie and Ms. Morgan also had a fantastic rapport with our son. They'd answer my zillion questions with patience and kindness (and man did I have a lot being new to this whole process). If you're reading this because your on the fence- choose KLA, you won't regret it!

In my experience, the school seemed more focused on admitting strong test-takers than on fostering genuine learning. Full transparency: my child was rejected after just one day in class--actually only three hours--despite being told there would be a two-day trial and a 65-day review period following the submission of recommendations and testing records. That felt misleading, to say the least. It would have been helpful to receive accurate information up front, rather than going through the emotional and logistical upheaval of preparing for enrollment, only to be blindsided. They know how to say all the right things in the beginning. Honestly, their approach reminded me more of a sales pitch than an educational process.

Former Middle schooler parent POV:…read more Stream was once a great place where kids could supplement their homeschooling with core subjects and extracurricular clubs in an intimate setting without the politics. The teachers genuinely cared, and the environment allowed children to be creative, connect with nature, and socialize. Unfortunately, since the change in ownership, (late 2023/early 2024) the quality has declined significantly. There is a lack of structure for the students and lack of communication to the parents. Most of the children were developing bad habits and bad behavior because there was no leadership, no accountability and zero discipline. My 6th grader was in the same class as HS level so he wasn't always grasping the topics or learning the lessons. This was just 8 hrs of socializing and having fun. Additionally, some kids with special needs or behavioral issues were not adequately supported, as the school lacked the experienced teachers and administrators necessary to help them succeed. As a result, there were lots of disruptions in the classroom and there were a lot of conflicts between the kids. The new administrators are inexperienced and have a hard time communicating with both parents and kids. For any parents seeking a well-structured environment where children can excel in their education , this is not the place. We have unenrolled and hope this will help other families as they research the best options for their kids. We pulled our son out a bit early and do not regret it. He's in a great private school that is faith based, structured and more economical. There are options parents!

I hadn't heard of the place before and read through their website and set up a time to visit. Tammy, the owner, was warm and welcoming, giving me a tour of the school and describing what she would provide for a birthday party. It sounded so cute! She told me to give her an idea of what I'd want for a theme and that she'd order all the supplies and set it all up. This was music to my ears! My son decided on a Jurassic Park theme and I communicated that to Tammy over email. Her response back was quick and professional, ensuring me all I had to do was show up. Again, as a busy mom of 2 littles, I couldn't have asked for more. We invited all of his 16 best buddies and I told parents they were free to drop their kids off or stay and hang out. The space is limited, only a couple chairs in the lobby area so it was actually great that most patents opted to drop off their kid and return at the end for pick up. Tammy and one other instructor lead the kids through 2 hours of dinosaur themed games, crafts and playtime (think musical chairs with dinosaurs). Each child was given a bag of sand with a small dinosaur to dig for which seemed to be a favorite activity along with the dino egg hunt. She arranged to have pizzas delivered for a small fee, they made some sort of dino juice and decorated cupcakes (which I brought). The kids had a blast and I was able to walk around, take pictures and talk to the few parents who were hanging out. I feel like what Tammy provided for the price we paid (compared to other options I looked into) was very reasonable and was a unique alternative to the parties we see alot at bouncy places or kids themed restaurants etc. I loved that there was an educational aspect to the fun they had that day. I would totally recommend a birthday at S.T.R.E.A.M. to any other parent looking for a unique idea for a kids party.
