It took me MANY visits to finally find this spot open which was a bit frustrating. I was rewarded with my first visit by having a good example of a delicious gyro. They don't have the biggest menu but as far as I know this is the only sit down joint in the area where you can get an gyro in a sit down restaurant. I found one other sit down Middle Eastern joint in Fairhope but it was expensive and not as good as what I get all the time in NOLA. We have a LOT of Greek and Middle Eastern restaurant options around New Orleans but options like that are challenging to find in Lower Alabama. There is a drive through only joint for gyros etc. in Gulf Shores but I'm a weirdo that HATES doing drive through and I only want to eat inside places as I don't eat in my vehicle like some kind of barbarian elementary school kid oinky oinking down on their chicken nuggets. Stumbled across this place while we were exploring downtown Foley. We popped in to give it a try. Very small spot , one employee did it all. We ordered at the counter and took a seat. It had an old school vibe. 5 tables, quiet, you could here the clicking of the ceiling fan and every move the employee made while prepping our meal.. Food came fairly fast, I had a falafel and he had a gyro with feta, lettuce and tomato. They were amazing, very messy, but super yummy. I was so hungry, I forgot the before picture. My first experience at John's  Gyro and Mediterranean today was a good one! This is a locally owned and operated that, as far as I can tell, has been here for a decade. It's one of those hole in the wall that is a gem of a restaurant serving a nice selection of really outstanding fresh Greek and Mediterranean dishes that are spot on.  The place is small with a half dozen tables that's dated but clean with counter service for ordering and paying but if you're dining in they will bring the order to your table and pay on exit. All orders are prepared fresh and to order and comes out hot. They have a menu on the wall and accessible with a posted QR code. No alcohol and drinks are canned and bottled.  We had a stuffed grape leaf platter that included a Greek salad, pita points and fresh tzatziki, while I went with a combination that I've never even heard of, teriyaki gyro with a Greek salad and french fries. The stuffed grape leaves are outstanding, their homemade tzatziki is as well. The Greek salad is iceberg lettuce with cukes, feta, kalamatta olives and Greek dressing. The French fries are very good and I gotta say that the surprise teriyaki gyro was excellent. It is packed with a very generous teriyaki gyro meat, with lettuce, tomato, and ready for this, pickles. Yes pickles that I've never seen on a gyro but with all the other flavors it really work.  They have gyros, pita sandwiches, a sweet chili burger, spanakopita, stuffed veggie grape leaves, and more and it's fresh and tasty. My partner's all about his fries and I think this is the most excited he's been about them in a while. Seasoned nice and salty with a crisp outside and soft but not greasy wet inside. Might be the best fries I've had in a year or more, oddly enough. Hopefully it wasn't a fluke! My pita was soft and fluffy, lettuce fresh and crisp, and falafel on the better side of average, maybe even a bit better than average--crisp, not too dense or mushy. My biggest was that I didn't need to ask for extra sauce for once! There was plenty. The shop itself isn't the most inspiring thing, and I can't speak for the interior since we only went to the counter, but there's a nice little south-facing lawn out back beneath some impressive conifers. Cute sunny tables, with a decent bathroom in the building down the brick path. I also appreciate that they offered to drop our food off at our car after ordering, since some of our guests were uncomfortable being indoors for long. read more

Food: A Greek place in Foley!? Who knew! Pros: The gyro meat was very good! Tender, not too greasy like some places. And a TON of fries! The thing was big enough for TWO meals too! Very delicious. Cons: No baklava!? That made me sad, but I understand. Atmosphere: Well, inside it looks a little messy... even possibly prior to COVID. So, I would recommend that they take this down-time to fix up the inside really nice. Some new furniture, maybe new coat of paint... I dunno, make it "POP" so when they do open up, it looks really good! Price: Not too bad, middle of the road I would say. 11$ for lunch and a drink? Plus the gyro was not one you can eat in one sitting... at least I couldn't. So, it was lunch and then a late afternoon snack as well. If you consider that, the price was really good! The food is delicious! Authentic Mediterranean food is hard to come by in the area, and this place is a hidden gem! Some of the reviews seem very... entitled. My experience with the owners was very good, they were kind and efficient. Food was quick and delivered right to the car due to COVID measures, which I appreciated. I wanted to like this place. I wanted so much to like it. However I didn't. The gyros were very dry and had no seasoning, and virtually no white sauce. They were cut way too thick and there was absolutely no taste to them. The fries were ok, salty-very salty, but again, no flavor. We were dissapointed. read more

This establishment is set to open at 11 at 1115 my husband I went in to order some gyro we waited 45min and we still have not received our meal . When we asked the owner of this establishment how long until we're able to get our meal he was extremely rude to us and asked if we are from the area.It should not matter whether we are or not from the area if he was gonna be delaying with our food he could have just apologize asking us to wait-a-bit longer, we would have been happy to have waited and stay. This is seriously one of my favorite restaurants in all of Baldwin county. His charming restaurant is so wonderful, I love the dive feel, it's very personal and I always leave with a smile on my face and leftovers! So much food. His gyros are not at all dry and actually very flavorful. They have options for all sorts of different diets and allergies. It is small and although I haven't been there at an unusually busy time I will say that his food would totally be worth the wait. Was hungry after an appointment at about two in the afternoon, been craving some gyros lately. After walking in I didn't expect much, so I was not surprised how the gyro tasted, I had it with watery cucumber sauce. Not enough tomatoes, lettuce, or onions. A lot of meat, but the flavor not what it should be. Lacking IMHO pleasant customer service, ( whatever happened to people saying thank you for your business) let's not forget to provide utensils, we are all Not barbarians and eat with our hands. people being food proud of what is served. Tasty gyros in a nice, casual setting. This is a very unassuming restaurant. We happened across it because the intersection at 98 and 59 was shut down and we had to detour through some side streets. John was working the counter and put together our gyros himself. All the ingredients were good, from the tasty meat to freshly warmed pita. The price was good. A nice, local place to get something to eat beside Southern food, seafood or fast food. read more

I tried really hard to like this place but the food was not good! The husband had a gyro and said that it was dry. I had a Greek salad, which consisted mainly of lettuce. I picked the gyro meat off because it was dry and didn't taste good. I respect the fact that we are visiting a small town business but it needs to be cleaned up. You could do worse for a Gyro. The food is good it's just not very clean or ran that well. They are late to open often and close when it slows down not by necessarily by their posted hours. Also, John is by himself so if he gets busy you can be waiting a while to place an order or get your food. Opa! We tried this for lunch on our most recent visit to the Gulf. Wow! Everyone tried a different gyro platter and I added some dolmades to start. Every dish was excellent and as authentic as you'll find in Alabama (note: that's not saying too much I know). The food was excellent and the service was amazing! My mother, aunt, sister, niece, nephew and I went to the Taste of Foley this weekend but my aunt suffers from Alzheimer's and was overwhelmed by the crowd. We were looking for a quiet spot and a chair in the shade and this place went above and beyond. They moved a table into the shade for her and assured us she could stay as long as she needed. We ordered my aunt a gyro ( tzatziki on the side) and a piece of baklava, both were delicious! They were extremely helpful and kind, the food was very good and they brought us a sample of delicious chicken and garbanzo beans. We went to John's for lunch last Friday -- we both had gyros with sides of fries for my husband and a small Greek salad for me. Here's the atmosphere when you enter the door: there is Mediterranean music playing. There is a sign to the left with the entire menu on it. An elderly lady is speaking in the background in a foreign language. I ordered the teriyaki gyro combo for $7. The combo comes with fries and a drink( a can of soda), which cost around $2 extra. The meat of the gyro was cooked just the way it should be, and the teriyaki sauce gave it a sweet and tangy taste, while still being savory. The fries were just as they should be. I like how the restaurant tells the story about an immigrant making there way in America. Here's what I think could be improved. The sign outside is cracked, and the building itself does not draw much attention as a restaurant. The menu is a bit limited, and it would be nice if there was some unlimited drink option, like sweet tea or lemonade. The walls could use a new coat of paint, but other than that this is a great place to eat, and I would recommend it as the Mediterranean choice of Foley. read more

Went here around 2pm, ordered the gyro w/ feta no cucumber sauce combo, they cooked the fries and were good and hot, the gyro was big and tasty! This is a hole in the wall establishment run by a family, it could use a little tlc but was clean. There is no friendly conversation, I believe this is due to their culture. Calling this place a middle eastern restaurant is more than a bit of a misnomer - its a gyro place and that's really about it. But, that's not a bad thing. Was shopping at the outlet mall and was looking for a place to eat. It's a store-front restaurant and walking in is a bit of a disappointment. It's really nothing to look at. The menu is mostly limited to gyro type sandwiches. Order at the front and they bring them to your table. Although I was a bit disappointed with the ambiance and limited menu, I have to admit, these were the best gyros I've ever had. If your expectations for the restaurant are reasonable you won't be disappointed by the food! I would go out of my way to eat there again! read more
