WAY, WAY, WAY OVERPRICED! They quoted $2615 to install airbags. What a joke... They also refused to install a hitch because there overpriced suppliers did not stock them and they will not let you purchase the part and have it delivered the shop. They recommended Trailer Source Longmont for the hitch so I called and they install the hitch and airbags. Trailer source quoted $1500 for parts and labor for the airbags. Over a $1000 less for the exact same work.... JOHNS 4X4 IS AN ABSOLUTE RIP OFF! BUYER BEWARE read more

I would avoid this place - Came in for an alignment on my 2010 Wrangler, told them my future plans to go hydraulic steering, have most of the parts in my garage, just wanted to get my caster/toe fixed before. They were fine with that when I scheduled it. Got it in the shop and they said I needed a new steering stabilizer (you don't even need to run one if your Jeep is set up properly), fix my shock mounts (move one rubber bushing to the top of the mount, which they wanted $111 for and would take all of 5 minutes, and I mounted them this way to gain downtravel), and a new steering box before they could give me an alignment. I told them none of this has an effect on an alignment (it absolutely doesn't, which I knew and confirmed with a few other 4x4 shops around here), they said they wouldn't do the alignment until that was done...Kevin was super snarky and not helpful at all. They also quoted me $985 for a new Mopar steering box...why would you not suggest a PSC big bore or an upgraded box, when it costs the same amount? Bottom line - They only charged me $75 but wasted 2 weeks for the appt and then a few hours of my time driving my Jeep home. I came to this shop because of the good reviews. I would not recommend and would absolutely not trust this shop with what they say you need done. read more

Took my Jeep in to have them check alignment and to fix the emergency brake. I talked with Ken and told him the e brake cables have been adjusted all the way. They diagnosed the Jeep and sent a estimate to fix the E brake handle and said this is the issue and will fix the problem. The quoted me 370.62. The next day they sent another quote for $370 and said it wasn't the handle and I need cables to fix this. I talked with the owner and he admitted this was there fault and messed up. He then tells me he will do it for the parts cost and no labor. If someone has the vehicle for diagnostic and quotes you a price that should be the price. Not come back after you approve the deal and then come back for more money. This is how you get your customers to not trust you. I offered to pay them for the original quote to fix the problem they messed up. But they won't do that they will only do it if I pay for the parts. This is bad business. The principle is a price was quoted for work and approved for that work. The part did not fix the problem and now want to charge the customer for their mistakes. John's 4x4 Boulder CO Don't waste your time or money; not even worth wasting you breath making a call. They do not care for their customers or for quality. I travel a lot for work. I had a CB and lift kit installed at John's 4x4 on my 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. I specifically asked tater tech, Lance, to center my steering wheel. He told me he did. My steering was so off it was nearly 90 degrees to the right. Hitting bumps on the freeway made the stability control think I was sliding. This, "Tech" is the last person you want touching your vehicle. I ended up stopping at a rest stop to center my steering myself. Lance also did not re install the weather separator that goes in the tail gate of the Wrangler. When I brought this up to Jeffrey he told me it makes no sense for him to send it to me since I was now working in MT and that a Jeep dealer was in MT. When Lance initially installed my lift he installed the sway bar links on the wrong side of the brackets. I had to ask to have them correctly installed. Lance also did not re install the hand brake bracket so every time mg rear axle moved it squeaked because the line was be tugged from lack of a bracket. Lance also incorrectly installed my front brake line brackets. I even asked if it was correct when they botched my Jeep. They swore up and down it was. Lance also destroyed my center console installed my CB. He put a hole in re bottom late enough to fit a tennis ball and he did a sloppy job. My pistol magazines fall through the hole so now I will need to purchase a new console. Further more he stripped on of the U bolt bracket screws so the CB fell off the bracket. I was not given my CB mix bracket either. The work, or lack there of, was done September 12th, 2013. It is now October 5th, 2013 and nothing has been corrected. I was also told that Lance had a hard night of drinking which is why his work suffered. If he can't control how much he drinks he shouldn't be touching other peoples vehicles. I ended up taking my Wrangler to AEV in Missoula, MT where Dave got my rig straightened out. Jeffrey has said over and over he will make this right and now he is ignoring my contact. If you want excellent customer service go to AEV. If you want to have your vehicle destroyed and ignored when you ask them to correct the damage they did go to John's 4x4. Save your time, money, and energy. Avoid John's 4x4. read more

Just bought my first Jeep and entering a very cool but expensive world. These guys are great for all levels of experience. They are everything you want out of an auto shop. Knowledgable, friendly, patient, honest... no other word but AWESOME!!! As I'm new, everyone I trusted pointed me to John's. The one knock I've heard, is they are a bit pricey. Their hourly rate was exactly what I paid at a few other shops. The big difference, they found the issue. If you are familiar with the Off-Road, 4x4, Overland community, you should already know about John's. If you are thinking or new, you should just put the phone down, and go talk to them. While I was getting things check out, Kevin let me talk his ear off about where I want to go with my build, future plans, and ideas I should consider. I've taken it into 2 other places, but that was a waste of money. Start here, they are the defacto standard. And truly, they are honest. Nobody is perfect, but they know what they know, and they won't BS about what they don't. You won't get steered wrong with John's. Not really happy with my experience today. Dropped off to have my second battery looked at as I believed it to be a bad ground. The tech Tim said hes unable to work on my car since the diagram he looked up suggested a relay and isolator. It would help if Tim looked up the correct redarc and found that my model doesn't need them. Never going back to these people out of touch with overlanding technology. read more

Very happy with my first service at John's 4x4 in Boulder. I've been looking for a place that specializes in Jeeps and John's does this. I recently bought my Jeep TJ and wanted to get all the fluids changed out. They gave me a good price. They also went with all the factory recommendations on the fluids, which I know some chains do not. When I arrived, I also had a couple other requests for them, which they performed at no charge. I took my F250 into Johns 4x4 for an oil change. Since my truck is a large engine diesel, oil changes are always expensive. Usually when I get my oil changed my mpg jumps a little bit. It is a heavy truck, so maybe from 15mpg to 17mpg (at the most), but it does jump up a bit. This time it did not. I was curious, so I poked around a bit underhood and saw MY old oil filter still in place!!!! I know it was mine because when I do my own changes I mark the date and mileage on the filter with a Sharpie, I don't have the windshield stickers to let me know so that is my way. Charging for a service you didn't do? Good job guys. You could have cost me $7,000 for a new engine so you could make a little more than $50! I wouldn't go to this place again if they PAID me! read more

This review is based on many years of being taken great care of by a Jeep specialty shop in Austin, TX that celebrates jeepers. I brought my jeep in for an oil change, was told it would be 30-45 min if I waited, but it was 2 hours (missing work). I also advised my check engine light was on and to please look at it and otherwise let me know/inspect for winter conditions. After those 2 hours, they did none of that and told me I'd have to come back for a separate $120 (probably multi-hour again) appt just to take a look, even after all that wait. If you want to buy a lot of shiny things for your 4x4, this may be the place to do it, but not for reliable service or customer care. read more

Im new to Boulder and was looking for trustworthy alternative to the dealer for my 02 tacoma trd. Dropped it off for checkup/oil change and mentioned a couple issues -specifically, rattle in front suspension and excessive belt noise. Oil change went as expected. Belt noise - nothing noted or documented in my paperwork. I asked about it again when I picked up truck but no mechanic spoke with me and they had no feedback (they didnt disagree with me that there was noise, but since they didnt document when I dropped off, they hadnt looked at this). Rattle noise - there is a definite noise in the front suspension which is getting louder. They charged me $33 dollars to diagnose and came up with nothing. Either dont charge me and dont find anything or charge me and tell me whats wrong! They didnt document the symptoms as I described, so Im not surprised they didnt find anything. Im extremely busy and it wasnt easy to get truck to them - other than oil, this service trip was pointless and Im out $33 bucks. They did offer to go ride with me but I would have had to come back and they didnt call to ask for more details - just charged me and said nothing was wrong. Nice guys and a clean shop but they didnt listen to me as a customer. I wont be going back...I have the impression that they are more of a 4x4/lift/aftermarket shop. Other than oil change, it was a waste of my time to leave it there. read more

I used John's 4x4 to provide my SmartStart breathalyzer, as required after a DUI conviction. Their lack of providing me with the correct information resulted in a 1 month delay in receiving the DMV approval to remove the device. After my 120 days of "calibration", (data upload to SmartStart), John's 4x4 never informed me that I would have to request SmartStart to submit my data to the DMV. It took countless phone calls and over 2 weeks to figure out where the break in the process was. The manager of John's 4x4 showed no concern when I informed them of the problem. I will be going to a different shop to have the device removed, and will never consider using John's 4x4 again. read more

Took my 1996 Fulls Size Bronco here about a month back as it was clunking when in 4WD, and the bumper was rusting apart. Turns out the frontU joints had to be replaced and some components had worn big time as a result. They also were able to find me a more cost effective solution to the bumper problem. Was it "cheap"? Nope, but expertise rarely is. Did they stay in contact with me, answer all my questions, fix the problem, the cause of the problem, work with me to find solutions and do it all in a timely matter? For the money that I spent on upgrading my Jeep they did not deliver as they should have. It took them about 5 months to deliver a product to me and it is still not complete. And this was both before and after their change of management issues. Constantly promising thing that they could not deliver, I simply do not trust their word. Though the work they did manage to complete has been good thus far, but for the money I paid I would have expected some quality service as well as parts. When I picked it up, grease stains were on the front seat, the headliner and the steering wheel. Their response was that those were there before, and not their responsibility.
