This place is kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but we decided to give it a shot as the reviews were good, and when traveling cross country we try not to hit up too many fast food joints. The menu was pretty extensive, the wife had liver and onions (she just ain't quite right in the head but I still love her) which she said was not bad. I had a better than average tuna melt. The fries were nothing special but that's okay. I would give this place more stars but for the people. No masks. No social distancing. Random strangers/locals standing over your table as they talk to their friends a few tables over, or flirt with the waitresses. It just did not give my Covid era emotions the warm fuzzies. read more

Based on our lunch at Johnny B's this weekend, I think this cafe is sorely over-rated. We ordered their 'famous' green chile patty melt sandwich with sweet potato fries, and the chicken breast sandwich. The chicken breast sandwich was simply a broiled breast on a plain hamburger bun. No dressing or sauce, no lettuce or relish: nothing. My patty melt was heavy on the processed cheese but the signature green chile was hard to find. The sweet potato fries were cold and limp. Sorry, but this place should be considered only as a last resort. read more

We were in town for the weekend to attend the Chile Festival in Hatch. Since this restaurant was right near our hotel, and the Yelp reviews were favorable, we stepped inside Johnny B's. Pleasantly surprised to see how busy it was on a Sunday morning. It was nice to see how friendly everyone was and to see how everyone knew everyone. A great vibe. Hubs had the "Johnny Special" with an over easy egg and I had the Biscuits & Gravy with 1 biscuit and sausage patties. They served COKE products! (a huge plus for me). Food was hot and yummy. I had two complaints: the gravy was a tad too runny for me. (Personally, I like a thicker gravy.) Sausage patties were a little overcooked and hard. Service was a bit slow (to be expected in these times) but all the waitresses were working hard and getting it done! If we're ever in TorC again, we would definitely stop here again. read more

Nonetheless, the waitress was happy and friendly, and the service prompt. We ordered five hamburgers with fries and a Philly cheese steak. The portions were above average, the presentation average, but everything was delicious. The ambience was very comfortable and "homey". I do recommend. When we think of a place that puts the word 'Hometown Cooking' in its name we expect food be made from scratch, on site and everyday. The name here is misleading because most of what we had over our two meals was clearly purchased from a food distributor - and frozen. To many people fresh food in this city is not a big deal and with as many poor food choices as there are in this neighborhood this restaurant isn't so bad. On a positive note the service is very good and the food here is way better than you get at Denny's across the street. Meanwhile it's average-at-best. Four of us came here for breakfast. The front desk at the Holiday Inn told us the food was amazing. There was nothing amazing about it. But it was a very good average breakfast. There was nothing to rave about and nothing to complain about either. They bring out large portions and for an affordable price. And if you're comparing the food to Denny's across the street or Hodges a few miles down the road yes the food here is much better but take into account what you're comparing it to as well. Lunch, none-the-less, was another story. We weren't impressed. As a matter of fact, our lunch tasted almost comparable to something like Denny's. The french fries are frozen, not hand cut like you would expect from a name that uses the word Hometown Cooking in it. The hamburger had little to no taste and the rueben wasn't anything to cheer about either. The biggest disappointment was the salad and the salsa. This is New Mexico where everybody makes fresh salsa on site. Whatever they gave us tasted like it came straight out of a bottle. That's a major no no in this state. And please let's get rid of the iceberg lettuce and bottled salad dressing and replace it with fresh greens and dressing made on site. That's what a customer deserves when they walk into a place that advertises Hometown Cooking. read more

Have enjoyed making this a stop over place when in TorC or on our way past. Have enjoyed the family atmosphere, the friendly service and the food. One of only a few places I have been able to enjoy the Liver and Onions on the menus. Very home cooked taste and feel. Only wish they did not close so early.....8pm seems early to me. read more

Food was great, service pretty good. The bathrooms need some cleaning. The portion size was large enough we could have shared food as is often the case in American restaurants. The waitress was very sweet and there were a ton of locals in at 9 on a Saturday morning. Always a good sign. read more

Dont judge this restaurant by its outside. It is a bit kitchy but the service is great (per 2 visits -so far! on this trip) I've had the huge chef salad. Crispy veg, lots of meat. My husband had a huge Mexican plate of heartburn delight. He was HAPPY and Full. Breakfast was huge, hot delicious. Waitstaff, Blanca and Megan, were cheerful and attentive.
