My friend invited me here as I've never been here before. Arriving there's a really big parking lot at close proximity to the rivers edge and a beautiful view!!! Walking in to the right is their store. The store has sweets, novelty items, ceramics and great gift sets. To the left is the bar and restaurant which has that beautiful view! The service despite how busy they were was very attentive. My friend ordered a corned beef and sauerkraut grilled sandwich with a crab soup and I got a duck burger with fries. The burger tasted like grounded up duck meat and breading. It had some kind of Asian flavored slaw that had way too much salt so I removed it and enjoyed the burger with just the lettuce. The fries has texture and flavor of re-refried fries. My friend said her soup was good but she would not get it there again. It was too watery for her liking. Her grilled sandwich was very good. Though the food wasn't the best we did enjoy each others company and made a great memory! read more

We had a five girls luncheon here on a beautiful Saturday. When we arrive, the hostess wasn't overly friendly, but she was fine. We found our friends and sat down to review the menu. Our server was fine but not very friendly. The crab asparagus soup had good flavor overall, but was quite salty. The flatbread was sweeter than we anticipated but was delicious. The Rachel sandwich was very good. Not sure what salads my friends ordered but they liked them. We enjoyed our meal overall, but we were never asked if we needed more ice tea or water. My friends eat here often so it seems this was an off day. read more

Came here for drinks with a friend. We went on a sunday when they close at 2:30, we stayed pretty close to that time yet they still gave us more beer which was nice of them. I found out when I got there that they have a brunch buffet every sunday and i was almost drooling the food looked so good I was eyeing it up the entire time i was there. Very nice view too. The staff is very friendly and the bartender was very attentive. might have to go back on sunday to try the buffet and the $3.50 mimosas. read more

Stopped in for drinks and had a great time soaking in the amazing views--definitely one of the highlights of this spot. Whether you're sitting inside by the windows or out on the patio, the scenery alone makes it worth the visit. We came during happy hour (4-6 PM), which made the experience even better--great drink specials and a solid selection to choose from. The vibe was lively but relaxed, and while it does get pretty busy (especially during happy hour), the atmosphere still felt enjoyable, not overwhelming. Parking was surprisingly easy--plenty of spots, which is always a bonus. If you're looking for a great place to grab drinks with a view, this one should be on your list. I was really looking forward to my one night out as a solo traveler and decided on this restaurant. First, the positives the view from this restaurant is outstanding right on the river and nice views of the bridge. The food was OK. I ordered the chicken Parmesan with the spaghetti which they make in house. They warn you right away that it's their version of pasta and honestly, I'm not a fan. It's kind of chewy and mealy. The Italians have been doing it right for thousands of years. Just stick to that. I had the lavender old-fashioned, which was not good and tasted kind of soapy, sweet and unbalanced and switched to an Elijah Craig old-fashioned which was a little too sweet and orange forward for my liking but decent. So why the 2 stars. As a solo traveler, I sat at the bar and the bartender could not care less if I was there or not. She was attentive to some of the other folks at the bar, but I have no idea why she was completely tuned out and unprofessional to several others including me at the bar. Absolutely baffled! I give grace because I was in the industry for 15 years ! I understand busy days . Do not get the Chesapeake nachos! Burnt chips ! Crab dip is terrible! 1. The hostess was no where to be found . We had walked in after people with reservations and they expressed they had been waiting 5 some minutes . 2 we then asked to he seated outside . Hostess told us it would be a half hour. Contimplated for a moment and decided to stay bc of the view and our first time here . 3. Came back in and requested an inside table and it as a nice view. 4 HOWEVER? After we sat two other people sat and got the table on the patio we asked if we could have because we saw it clean. NOT. Reservation! I asked bc I knew them 5. I have no idea our servers name! 6 our menus stayed at our little table the entire meal! 7 we had empty plates glasses etc and our waitress didn't take anything till the 3rd time she checked in. Mind you our water glasses were empty our drink glasses were also empty . Silverware was dirty. Napkin dirty and no replace meant 8 when I had questions of certain things the server woman said" god you ask alot of questions when I'm doing other things " Well I'm sorry I've never been here !! 9 no check back in on our food which was sad!!! My "turkey burger" was the size of a Mickey ds burger !!! 10 my husbands "WAYGU" burger was awful and almost un edible !!!! Overkill with onions etc !!! P.s drinks sucked as well! Watered down . The cream of crab soup was highly recommended so I was not disappointed. I never heard of chow which I was told is a staple in eastern Pennsylvania so tried Lehman's Sweet Bologna with house mustard, Cooper cheese, pickled chow chow, rustic Italian bread. Very good. Every time I have eaten here, the food was always great. The Staff is very friendly and very attentive. They have many specials at happy hour and even at certain times they have buy one get one free. This was our first time here. Maybe our only time. We went for the buffet brunch and it was awful. They serve brunch of cheap plastic plates. There were very limited food options and mostly poor quality. The place is nice, the view is great but the buffet brunch was not worth it. read more

I was hesitant about going here after seeing most of the reviews. Our entire party of 17 had an AMAZING experience! Our waitress, who was handling a table of 17 alone, was so patient and kind. She took the time to address each of us individually, made sure our drinks were full before they were empty, and checked on us often. We were on the enclosed patio which had heat warmers for the back room. For an appetizer, I shared the mussels and oysters with a friend. The mussels were delicious and flavorful. The oysters were okay. A little too much topping for my liking, but delicious and juicy nonetheless! My meal was the beet and goat cheese salad with honey mustard dressing and salmon. It was delicious! Salmon was cooked perfectly. My boyfriend got the chicken parm which was also really good! I had a great experience and would be back. This place used to be a gem! What happened here!?! 3 couples met there on a Saturday evening in February. Everyone's meals were quite average. Thought we would try it again last Friday with 5 couples. The reservation was made for 8 people by error. Upon arrival, the greeter was very rude and turned us away. This place is always busy! The service is slow, but the food and view are worth it. I had their gluten-free crabcakes, and was happy with them. (I've actually never had gluten-free crabcakes, so I was thrilled to be able to have them since I'm GF!) After eating, it's nice to walk across the lawn and take in the beautiful view of the river. read more

The view is spectacular; no doubt the best aspect of this restaurant. We sat outside under the awning on a lovely summer evening. Service was also very good. Cocktails were OK. However, the food was really disappointing. Two of our group had the mahi mahi special. The fish was overcooked and served with a strange tasting yellow and green pepper colis. The crab cake was better than the dried out fish. Another dish was very disappointing: Overcooked Mahi mahi stuffed with very little crabmeat filled with mayonnaise. Desserts were standard; key lime tart and peanut butter chocolate bomb. I wish the food was a good as the view; I'd be back more often. read more

We had the most wonderful Rehearsal Dinner at John Wright! The coordinator was so helpful and the servers were on top of everything. The food was amazing. All of our guests enjoyed. There was a thunderstorm this night and not only does the restaurant normally have a gorgeous ambiance & view, but this night we had the perfect view of the lightning storm (the kids especially enjoyed this). They gave us the most perfect rehearsal dinner we could ask for. Thank you to the team!!! Our menu consisted of options: Appetizers- Local Pork Spring Rolls & Salad. Returned 1st time since a brunch a few years back and was disappointed. Atmosphere was great, the place was filling up, but in the end not great. Server was great, but clearly overworked and there was no one to help. The food was ok at best. The worst part of evening was the smell of the rest room prior to walking in and sticky floor. On my last night up North, we came back to the JW for dinner. I will always have this as a goto place to dine out. The views can't be beat especially this time of year with the fall colors, the menu is exceptional and the service is always friendly. There were a few disappointments this time. They no longer serve the blackberry infused bourbon. This was a mighty blow as that was so good. One of the busboys dropped a tray of water & a piece of glass bounced off my leg. Not a single person asked if I were ok. This was sad as it obviously hit me. I didn't make a big deal out of it as I didn't want to ruin my dinner. Finally, the table bread that they have. There is an odd flavor to it as well as being unsalted bread. Not very good at all. To start off, I ordered the brie with fig. The brie was rich and perfectly warmed. The fig preserve were tasty and perfectly balanced the dish. The bread was wonderfully crunchy. The only bad note was the GINORMOUS knife they give you. It's like a super sized steak knife when a butter knife would do. Next up was a short rib rigatoni with a mushroom brandy sauce. OH. MY. Stars. This was sinful. Like, I felt like I should go to confession for committing one of the 7 deadly sins of gluttony. The rigatoni was perfectly cooked, the mushrooms were tender, not soggy and the sauce. The atmosphere I really enjoy being there. The table service has always been really good. The food has always been hot and well presented.

My husband and I were planning on having dinner with a group of friends, 10 total. One of the gals in the group made our reservation. Upon arriving, we realized the reservation had been made for 8 instead of 10. Our mistake, but the response of the hostess was completely unprofessional, rude and arrogant. When my friend asked if there was anyway to add two more to the reservation we were told very rudely, you make a reservation for the number of people coming and we would not be accommodated and the only way we could stay is if the large table seated 8 outside and two of our party moved inside by themselves. Never once was it communicated kindly or in a friendly manner from the hostess. Quite honestly we were shocked at the tone and manner with how we were treated. The hostess is the first impression when dining out. It was NOT a good experience!! PS, we love to bless our servers when we are dining out! Sorry for them! And John Wright lost a large amount of revenue! I guess they don't need it!! We will not be back to John Wright!! Just a note, we were able to get a reservation at The Railroad House in Marietta. Dinner was excellent and our server, Nike was amazing and attentive to our group of 10!! They know the art of hospitality at the Railroad House!! read more

we met friends there so there were 6 of us total. We ordered appetizer which came out fine. Then our meals can I ordered smokehouse plater, which was Ribs, Brisket, roasted potatoes, and bake beans. The main course came out and it was awful. The potatoes were burnt. The ribs and brisket was so over cooked and dry I could not eat it. I found that my one friend ordered the same thing and his dinner was the same way. My wife ordered the seafood manicotti. The sauce was so thick it was more like pudding. Needless to say we will not be going back there again We did ordered dessert since we could not eat the dinner and that was excellent. read more

This was a great recommendation coming from one of my local customers. He mentioned that across the river is not always the best place to go, but in the case of John Wright Restaurant--- it's one of the better food choices. A large building which also has a store located directly next to a factory. The restaurant takes reservations but also has plenty of seating indoors as well as outdoors. I was with 2 of my colleagues for lunch. We opted to actually sit in the bar area since the dining area was extremely vibrant and loud. Our waitress was Allison who provided excellent service. I ordered the Reuben sandwich with a side of broccoli salad. I was very impressed with the sandwich and also the side salad which I highly recommend. Very reasonably priced. Server was nice but admitted they were short staffed so did not see much of her. We had the pizza the sauce on that pizza is horrible, way too chunky. Very strange, my fiancé only picked what meat if he could from his meat lovers because of the chunks of tomato, onion, and I think peppers.. he absolutely hated his and pretty much said it's the worst pizza he's ever had. I had the blood orange drink which I thought was supposed to be your crush but that was absolutely nasty and tasted more like soda. Yeah, I was not a fan at all. The inside is very nice. The pizza patio has really shitty chairs that are very uncomfortable and very small table, so you don't have a lot of room to be around or put yourself down. We definitely will not be going back but we wanted to give it a try. read more

This is our 3rd visit in 10 years. May not seem like much but we live in Texas and try to come visit when we are up this way. We tripped over this restaurant years ago and found everything about charming and lovely. From the location by the river, the quality and variety of the food, the selections of libations and the service. We would be here weekly if we lived closer. read more

Weird experience, the atmosphere gives off a much higher end experience feel than the food and service did. Made the reservation and their immediate response was "okay that gives you an hour and a half at the table", which was weird, I know during Covid times and such there were some limits on tables, but were in 2025 at this point. My wife and I rarely get a kidless weekend, and we love to eat at different restaurants. So when we go out (in rarest occasions) we like to make it special by over ordering to try many different things for the food experience. And expect to take home several left overs. We ordered 3 appetizers initially it was the chicken lolli's but the waitress warned us that it would take a good amount of time to get them to the table. So that deterred us from ordering it and went with something else. And as she was walking away, I added on a Caesar salad, as their menu states they make all dressings in house. So why wouldn't I want to experience something unique? Her reply was "are you sure? you've ordered a lot of food already" to which I replied, "yes we're ordering for left overs to eat through out the weekend." I thought this was kinda weird because, the more we order, the higher the check and the higher her tip. We ordered drinks, I ordered a bourbon at $15, and did not get what I expected, I received MAYBE an ounce of bourbon. It came in a Glencairn glass, which is just a tasting glass so it was super small, and super empty. Apps came we ordered the pork springs rolls, I enjoyed them, wife got the buratta, the cheese itself was good, but the crusty bread was toasted, but seemed like they toasted it well in advanced as it was super stale and to thick to enjoy. Scallops with the corn risotto were AMAZING. Cesar salad had shaved Parmesan cheese, and what seemed like Parmesan crips? Double cheese I guess. Wasn't advertised with any cheese in the menu, as I would've asked without it. I ordered the NY Strip entree, mind you I enjoy onions and mushrooms in a steak, but the onion the mushroom ratio was easily 10 to 1. The grade of steak was that I would expect of a diner. A lot of fat, (and I enjoy some fat in a steak typically) and part of it was really hard ineditable fat. I say the steak seemed "diner esk", because there wasnt much taste to the steak. Severely under seasoned if at all. Wife ordered the Crab Stuff Maui, a bit dry without the sauce they slather on. Came with a weird (to us) celery tasting stuffing maybe? Not sure what it was, and it wasn't advertised on the menu. Deserts came on a dessert tray but everything was kinda melting and distorted on display. Wife ordered carrot cake, and she loved it, only took a few bites (because we order for the next few days) it was really good. When it came time for paying the bill, it was also super weird and awkward, they give you the check, I put my car in the folder expecting them to take it away. But instead she comes back with there ordering system that doubles as a payment system, and stands there and swipes the card and holds the device extends it infront of you with the tip decision to make in front of her. I normally refrain from posting bad reviews and contact businesses directly, but there's a reason why John Wrights Restaurant is only a 3.2 and I'm surprised its that high. We live 7 miles away and gone to John Wrights at least 2 dozen times over the years hoping the experience gets better but the highest praise I can give during our visits is mediocre at best. Their menu is always limited at best and food is marginal. Only thing going for them is the beautiful view of the Susquehanna. My wife always always wants to go to give them one more chance and I cringe every time. I would rather drive an hour away than go to John Wrights!!!!!! My then mentioned on Facebook their limited menu and issues we've had in hopes they may change because she wanted them to maybe improve so we could give them one more try. However, instead of management using the criticism to improve they attacked her calling her a troll. It was pathetic for a business to do this in any form, but doesn't surprise me because everytime we went there is an air of arrogance coming from this restaurant that now is confirmed by their management's behavior. If I could give a negative star, I would because one is too high. read more

It has definitely been a bit since my family and I have been privileged enough to have dined at that venerated John Wright restaurant. If memory serves we have always had a good to great experience in their eatery. Unfortunately, finances what they are we have not been able to enjoy the hospitality of their establishment in quite sometime. However, if memory serves me in regards to our last visit (barring any changes to the menu or recipes) the food and atmosphere are fairly good/great. However, you will be paying a bit of a premium price. It seems that is now the new normal. Again, this is based on, from my recollection about a few months ago.
