OMG! I am recovering at home from major surgery, and of course, my plumbing goes on the fritz - after 6:00 pm on a Monday night. I looked up plumbers under Yelp, and called Mr. Thurston the first time at about 6:05 pm. He was finishing another job and asked me to call him back in an hour (after listening to all my details); I called him back and he was still working, so he said he would call me back. I thought, sure...but he did. We talked about my problem again, and he said he was on the way. I told him I thought I could wait until tomorrow since it was by now almost 8:30 pm., and could he just come tomorrow (also so I would not have to pay an after-hours fee). He insisted on coming anyway as he was so booked, he could not fit me in during regular hours for two days, but promised that he would not charge me any extra for the after-hours call - he just wanted to help me out! He came, found the problem within about 20 minutes (outside in the dark) and billed me minimally for a full fix. He was not only professional, but very nice and went out of his way to give me good service at an extremely good rate. Do not call anyone else for plumbing - he is the best! I called this company for a couple of small jobs at a rental property. The appointment was lined up for the morning, and the tech was supposed to call the tenant 30 minutes before arrival so he would know when to expect him. Instead, I (the property manager) received the call around 8 in the morning to say he would be at the property around 8:30 am. He made a comment about the fact I never sent him the tenant's contact information, when I actually did the week before, by text, liked he asked. In any case, 30 minutes came and went, and the tenant called me around 8:50 am to ask if the plumber was still coming. I called the plumber to tell him the tenant had to leave soon for work, and asked when he might be there, to which he responded he would be there shortly, and had an attitude about it. At 9:15 am my tenant let me know he had to head to work, but told me the back door was unlocked and the upstairs tenant was aware the plumber was coming and would let him in. Not even five minutes later I got a call from the angry plumber saying he was at the property and no one was home. I started to tell him the door was unlocked and the upstairs tenant could let him in when he cut me off and told me to find someone else for the job. He never stepped foot inside and had the audacity to have an attitude because HE showed up 45 minutes later than HE said he would. He also accused me of never having given him the contact information he needed after I forwarded him the text I had sent the week before. I told him I would gladly find someone else as he had been very rude and unprofessional. I seriously have no idea how this company has the rating it does. Buyer beware. read more

Called him and got a fast phone response, and he came out the very next day, though our plumbing issue certainly wasn't an emergency of any kind. He was a nice fellow, and he fixed what we needed. Our only issue was that he charged much more than I expected for barely an hour's work, but we were tired of waiting on other plumbers to even give us a callback, show up, etc., so we told him to go ahead. read more

Had him to install a sink and dishwasher, part of the job was replacing a studor valve on the sink: he showed me the valve he was going to install and acted like he did and charged me for it. A week later I looked under the sink and the valve was never installed. I called and left a message on whether he was going to return to install it and he never replied. read more

Exchanged emails over several days. He was going to call. He would call tomorrow. He would call today, if he hasn't called already. He never called. I really wanted to work with him based on word-of-mouth reviews. But is was not to be. I contacted another Yelp recommended plumber, they promptly got back to me and set up an appointment for the next day. They called back and said they were located in Jacksonville (we're in St. Augustine) and they would not be coming. The third Yelp recommendation wanted $77 to come and estimate, and it would not be deductible from the cost of the job. I didn't bite. Went on my own, call a guy, gave me an estimate on the phone and came two days later and did all four items on my project. read more

I've hired lots of tradespeople in the past and John Thruston Plumbing is the best! My wife and I have a beach house in St. Augustine and it's new - so we haven't really had a reason to call a plumber... until last night when my wife stuffed have a garden down the disposal and the drain backed up. My wife called John Thurston and he told us that he would take care of it in the morning. At 8:00 a.m. he said he was on his way and would be at our house by 8:30 he showed up & he was. He not only fixed the sink issue, but addressed another issue that we were having that was unrelated. Furthermore I asked him about our water heater and some advice and he told me an easy fix & that I could do it myself and save money. He absolutely could have told us we needed a new garbage disposal & a new faucet & that we needed more work to the water heater than we did... but he's honest and fair with his pricing & generally just a nice guy. Christmas Day 2016 and family from all around the country were about to converge on our home when we experience plumbing problems. Seriously? Luckily we had the option to celebrate at a nearby family member's home, which we did. The next day, within 10 minutes of Mark from John Thurston Plumbing arriving, he informed us that we had just moved into the "worst case scenario" bracket. With determination and humor Mark resolved the issue which probably originated when the new home construction company next door damaged our septic pipe near the street. I have found my plumber! We had an issue with the pipe from the house to the septic system on a SUNDAY of all times. I called several plumbers and John not only responded quickly but also charged a very reasonable price for a weekend! John is very good. He is direct and to the point, but do not take it as an insult. He does not negotiate his price and he is honest about that and you finding a cheaper plumber. Some think it rude, but I find it better then BS-ing me. read more

This guys rates are outrageous. He charged my fiance, who is a single mom over $600 to replace a shower valve (after he couldn't get a stuck cartridge out), and it took him less than two hours. Its not like it was difficult to get to, just cut a square out of the drywall on the other side of the valve (I watched him, took 5min to get to the valve). I looked up the parts he used from the boxes he threw away, and they were no more than $75 total (valve and trim kit). THAT COMES OUT TO ABOUT $260 PER HOUR!!!! I doubt even a Doctor get this per hour (if you factored their per hour cost). Hire this guy if you want to get price gouged. I honestly don't know how he's still in business. Good guy! Came quickly and handled new faucet and drain installation. I didn't have the right parts for dishwasher and he jury-rigged a hose line. Leaks but worth the try. He is worth considering. I recommend him. He will be coming back to change out a shower valve stem and install the right dishwasher discharge hose. read more

Late Sunday afternoon, my husband discovered that we had a leaking problem with a pipe under our kitchen sink that seeped water into the back of the sink, which then seeped into the next room, under the rug. We saw that the pipe had shifted somehow, downward, thereby slightly disconnecting with the rest of the pipe. When my husband called a number of plumbers, the following day, he found that 5 were no longer in business and earliest that the remaining 4 could come to our house was in 2 days. I found John Thruston Plumbing on this site, Yelp, and when I called him, he asked for me to text our address and phone number and that he would do his best to come out to see us that day. I called This company to inquire about coming out to a home that I manage in the area. He was very rude overall and ended up hanging up to me. I was hoping to have a great relationship with a plumber for this home and another; however during his call, he was unwilling to work with me because I am work for a property management company and he's fighting to get paid from other management companies. I assured him that this wouldn't be a problem as I could pay at time of work with a credit card. he stated he does not take credit cards. We discussed service fees and then that is where he stated his service call fee of $125 to look at a toilet. From there I asked him if that was standard cost as it seemed a bit high (just a general question as I am not from that area). He then proceeded to say if you don't like it and it's too high then look for someone else. Then he hung up. I called this company because of the high reviews he had. I woke up to a cold shower yesterday and decided real fast that I needed some professional help... probably with my hot water heater! he took no time to figure out the problem - just grabbed the spout and twisted it - and broke the pipe off down inside the wall - if he had taken a minute, he cld have secured the pipe w/ a wrench and twisted the spout off the way it was supposed to be done - after he broke the pipe and pulled it out of the wall, he showed me how the spout just twisted off - he had to cut a hole in the wall to replace the pipe he broke - he did not apologize - nor did he repair the hole in the wall or caulk the new spout - he told me my husband cld do both jobs - he charged $155 for less than half an hour of work - I asked what his hourly rate was and he said $90 - the new spout he put in was cheap builder grade chrome - I had priced them at Home Depot and the ones that were twice as heavy were only $30 - so even if his minimum was an hour of labor, he still way overcharged me - and left an ugly hole in the wall for us to repair - read more
