The "Old" Moore County Courthouse stands in the center of the traffic island at the core of…read moredowntown Carthage. It is the third to serve as the county courthouse, a three-story structure of Indiana limestone and concrete in a Renaissance Revival architecture. It was completed in 1923, designed by architect Christopher Gadsden Sayre. It does not have columns instead is a symmetrical building with somewhat limited ornamentation. Sayre's works are known for proportion and integration of classical motifs into public architecture, such as the Wiley Elementary School in Raleigh and the former John Graham High School in Warrenton. The courtroom is on the second floor and I was not able to tour it this afternoon. Moore County itself was established in 1784, carved from Cumberland County and named for Alfred Moore, a Revolutionary War veteran and U.S. Supreme Court justice. It is a three-story Classical Revival building made of rectangular tan brick. It has a clock in the tympanum of the pediment and a pedimented portico. In 1976, the inside was renovated. Unfortunately, the building was secure when I visited over the weekend. You can still walk the exterior to appreciate the structure and the various monuments on the grounds. Montgomery County was formed in 1779 from Anson County and included what is now Stanly County. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. They are 40 miles apart and I can't be bothered to argue with Yelp about fixing their error. *] This marker is just to the south/east of downtown Carthage and points out some pre-Civil War history. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "This street is the route of the Fayetteville-to-Salem plank road, a toll road 129 miles long, built 1849-54." It is marker number K-26 and it was erected in 1948 by the Archives, Conservation and Highway Departments. The 129-mile toll road built between 1849 and 1854 during a statewide push to improve transportation infrastructure. Inspired by similar roads in Canada and the northern U.S., it was part of a broader plank road movement that saw nearly 500 miles constructed across North Carolina by 1860. Despite initial enthusiasm and investment, the roads proved costly to build and maintain, and were quickly overshadowed by the rise of railroads, particularly after the North Carolina Railroad opened in 1856. The Civil War and economic downturns ultimately ended further development, leaving the plank roads as a brief but ambitious chapter in the state's transportation history. One the base, the four sides read "In memory of Montgomery County sons who served in the World War" and "In memory of Montgomery County women who did their part in all wars" and "In memory of Montgomery County sons who served in the Confederate States Army" and "In memory of Montgomery County sons who served in the Spanish American War." From the 1850s until the 1920s, this factory manufactured thousands of horse-drawn vehicles that traveled across the South, each one a testimony to creativity and local enterprise. The story begins with a little buggy repair shop and grows into a regional powerhouse, producing 3,000 cars each year. Their rubber-tired buggies and exquisite Victorias were more than just vehicles of transportation; they represented a slower, more deliberate manner of living. The factory's brick buildings and the magnificent houses of its founders still exist, quiet relics of a time when industry and artistry worked hand in hand. The Tyson & Jones legacy, now housed in a museum and commemorated with a spring Buggy Festival, recalls a time when transportation was tactile, communal, and even beautiful. The clatter of hammers, the smell of fresh paint, and the satisfaction of a job well done no longer exist in the same manner they once did.
