The new courthouse was built from 2011 to 2013 in a Modern architectural design, a three-story brick and concrete structure with a projecting central section and tall vertical columns rising across the facade. It sits just south of the historic courthouse on landscaped grounds, and the clean lines, wide pediment, and contemporary symmetry make it feel purpose-built for a growing county. Seeing the two buildings back to back really drives home how courthouse architecture has evolved. The old courthouse is all Victorian ornament and cupola drama, while the Justice Center is streamlines, efficient, and clearly designed for modern court operations. Even with the building closed for the weekend, it was easy to appreciate how thoughtfullt it was laid out and how in complements, rather than competes with, the historic landmark across the circle. Never thought I'd be writing a review about a courthouse but here we are…read more I had the privilege of sitting in the courtroom of Judge Pendergrass for a traffic violation. With everything going on in the world and people losing faith in our justice system my experience today gave me a little faith in humanity. Judge Pendergrass is the kindest, most disarming and fair judge I have ever seen, onscreen or off. Many in the room were nervous, tense before walking up to the podium. Even if they were handed heavy fines or judgement, they walked away relieved. He speaks to everyone with kindness and asks about their lives. One man had a one year old son and he talked to him about how exciting it must be sharing their first Christmas. He gave him extra time to pay off his ticket so he could get something nice for his son. At a stressful moment in everyone's lives, the demeanor of this judge is hopeful and heartwarming. Thanks for reinstalling some faith in our justice system. Judge Pendergrass truly is honorable.

The place is pretty easy to find and parkinng was definitely not the worst. The Good: This is the first time in my life when I went to a courthouse and it was a fairly enjoyable experience. Its spacious on the inside, well kept, secure, and modern. The most unexpected thing there was that everyone was really friendly and helpful. Not one person there from the security to the parking garage attendant seemed disgruntled. I went there to have my fingerprints taken and I had made an appointment online. Not only was the lady at the window and the lady who did my prints very friendly, but I was actually seen on time! Unbelievable. Friendly staff AND timely service at a government facility? That's new to me. If you have a choice of courthouses in the area, I would recommend this one. Plus some nice local shops are close by if yo u have to wait for someone or something, you can grab a nice coffee or whatever. The Bad: You have yo pay for parking. $2 for the first hour and $1 for every additional hour up to $10 max.

There is recessed entrance a large vertical windows on the second and third stories. The roof line is flat. In the interior, the main courtroom is located on the third story and has a balcony on the rear side. Johnston County was formed in 1746 and Clayton was selected as the county seat with the county's first courthouse. The seat was moved to Smithfield in 1771 and the new courthouse was built here. A third courthouse was built in 1786 and then a fourth in 1843. This one is the fifth and is considered "the old courthouse" as the current one was built in the 1980s. There is a Civil War marker on the front steps - General William T Sherman used the 1771 courthouse as his headquarters on his march toward Raleigh. On April 12th 1865 Sherman received a telegram from General Ulysses S Grant informing him of General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox while in Smithfield. There is also a WWI memorial with a "doughboy" holding his rifle "In memory of the illustrious dead of Johnston County who died in the Great World War 1917-1919" with a list of names. It is a three-story Classical Revival building made of rectangular tan brick. It has a clock in the tympanum of the pediment and a pedimented portico. In 1976, the inside was renovated. Unfortunately, the building was secure when I visited over the weekend. You can still walk the exterior to appreciate the structure and the various monuments on the grounds. Montgomery County was formed in 1779 from Anson County and included what is now Stanly County. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. It portrays a time when government was more accessible to the people, and people were more a part of government decisions. I love seeing these old courthouses. Many of them have lost their surroundings, but this one still has buildings around it. It makes for a living downtown area, heartening back to yesteryear. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

In downtown Winston-Salem, the current Forsyth County Courthouse doesn't try to charm you with…read moreornate flourishes as much as it asserts itself with the clean, modern lines of a government building built for heavy daily use. The present courthouse, completed between 2020 and 2023 is a six-story brick, concrete and glass structure with a flat roofline and a two story steel and glass porch on its west front. Inside, it holds 17 courtrooms and 3 hearing rooms, all arranged along escalators and public elevators that make the building feel more like a contemporary civic center than a traditional courthouse. What makes this site interesting is how it sits in a long lineage of Forsyth County courthouses. The previous courthouse, completed in 1976 and known as the Forsyth County Hall of Justice is still standing, as is the even earlier 1897 courthouse that was remodeled in 1926/1927 and later converted into apartments. Forsyth County itself was formed in 1849 from part of Stokes County and named for Colonel Benjamin Forsyth, a War of 1812 officer who was mortally wounded in battle. The courthouse sits in the middle of city shaped by a unique civil merger. Winston and Salem began as separate towns, one a Moravian settlement dating to 1766 and the other established in 1849. After an unsuccessful attempt in 1879, the two communities finally voted to consolidate in 1913, creating Winston-Salem and setting the stage for the city's rapid twentieth century growth. The building is easy to visit and photograph though parking in downtown during the week can be a challenge. And note that cell phones are not permitted inside the building, not even in the lobby. On a Saturday morning, it was easy enough to find a spot and walk around the site easily.
