2 cataracts and both back of the ball. I was almost blind. Now I see almost perfectly. Medicare pays so it's all good. The doctor is a total professional. The whole team is friendly and totally rock. He's going to speak directly to you. He's not a Pediatrician so act like an adult (don't argue and do what he says) and you will see so much better in very little time. Only 1 year for my 4 surgeries and that's when COVID-19 was raging. He's done over 30K surgical procedures. So listen to him and his team and you will be as happy as I am. read more

Unsatisfactory experience for sure. Very unprofessional attitude towards his patients. Appointments are arbitrarily cancelled without any explanation other than a "scheduling conflict". Yelpers, please be warned, his "scheduling conflict" has taken me six long months. And it will happen to you 100%. This phrase is an in-office catch-all that the scheduling desk used with great regularity. Personally, I got soooo tired of hearing that particular phrase.... LOL. I don't know, I guess what it all comes down to, my friends, is our time; they don't seem to respect it. In all fairness, they did give me a 24-hour notice; however, six months, I think, seems a bit too long and inconvenient too. He asked if she spoke English, and she said yes, he asked if her family was with her. My dad was, he told him that my mom was legally blind and needed a cataract surgery and that he needed a new part for the machine and he asked for $2,000 cash for the part, WTF! The doctor performed the surgery well; however, after five follow-up appointments for the same concern, Dr. Boksoky showed up early in the morning with an unprofessional attitude. Without saying a word, he attempted to hold my hand and cover my eyes. He then asked my daughter to translate but was extremely rude to her. Despite following his recommendation for the most expensive procedure, we kept asking the same questions without getting clear answers. The overall experience was very disappointing and unpleasant. I now have to find another doctor to perform the procedure on my other eye. Additionally, the wait times are terrible. The waiting room is overcrowded, and he sees over 10 patients in an hour. Had we known this beforehand, we would not have chosen him for the Trulign implant. This is just my honest feedback. read more

I'm the caretaker for my 90 year old mom , I took her in to see dr Bokowski for a. routine eye exam, follow up. We waited over three hours. He asked regarding my level of education , and knew I was a health professional, he stated that he wanted to understand / know my level of understanding so he could converse with me , yet I don't think it mattered . He was disrespectful towards my mom , she could not sit correctly on his exam chair due to her age and arthritis, instead of helping her into the right position, he frustratingly barked orders towards me. He was impatient and did not explain much unless I asked questions, only dictating to his assistant as if we were not present. I needed cataract surgery on both eyes in 2019. My experience with Dr. Bokowsky was so traumatic that I've put off surgery on the remaining eye. To start, Dr. Bokowsky was impatient that I wasn't sedated enough. He actually started YELLING at the anesthesiologist (a nice woman). When he calmed down a bit he told me sedation wasn't necessary; the numbing drops in my eye were sufficient - "JUST DON'T MOVE!". Things went OK until he tried to insert the new lens: "YOU HAVE A HEAVY BROW RIDGE". Quite true, but is this really my fault? Ten minutes go by, and he still can't get the lens in. "YOU HAVE BROWN EYES". Again, true, but don't most people? More berating of the anesthesiologist. More "DON'T MOVE!" admonitions even though I'm as still as stone. After 30 minutes of trying he finally got the lens in. The final results were Not Good. At the followup appointment he walked in, looked at my eye, and said only: "some of my best work, go see another doctor" and walked out. In summary, just find someone else. read more

I had cataract surgery with this doctor who came highly recommended First, he insulted me by saying I had SMALL EYES. This should have been an awakening not to go to surgery. He did some cutting to overcome the "small eyes" and my eyelid has never been the same. When going to the post-op final examination he ghosted me by negating everything I said. I cannot sleep on the side of the operation: Why not? I see no reason. You must have cut somewhere you should not have: I see nothing wrong. I can feel the lens implant: No, that is impossible. I have been seeing the optometrist at Dr. Bokosky's office for 5 years. I was told bilateral cataract surgery was needed. My preop visit was 7/31/23, the first time ever with Dr Bokosky. He insisted I get premium lenses that are not covered by Medicare. I explained they were not in my budget. He pressed on insisting I would have better vision. I replied if glasses or contacts are needed post surgery that is fine. But the approximately $10, 000 quoted for both eyes was out of the question. He used tactics of shaming and bullying. I was so upset when I left I cancelled the already scheduled surgeries and went to another physician. I am so happy I did. I had two Crystalline lenses put in for my cataract surgeries. The first one was a problem for a year. It hurt, burned, and was red. I could not wear eye makeup for over a year because It was so painful. After a year of constantly going to see Dr. Bokosky, the assistant looked into my eye with their magnifying equipment, and announced that the goalpost on the side of the lens was crooked. I had to go under general anesthesia again and have the goal post pushed back toward the lens. After the second Crystalline lens was surgically inserted, I returned again post-surgery because I wasn't still seeing correctly at night and Dr. Bokosky said "this is the best it can get." Well, the cataracts are back, after paying $6,000 out of pocket for both eyes, I am more than upset!! Every year since the surgeries my eyes have been progressing worse at night. I again, still see the halos and stars around the lights. The ophthalmologists at Shiley Institute have told me that there is nothing they can do to help me! I not only want my money back I need to find another ophthalmologist to repair these lenses! And if it is not repairable as the doctors at Shiley have said, then I need a good attorney! read more

I am a very long term patient. I have seen Dr Bokosky often over the years. He has performed surgeries and treated a variety eye problems over these many years. I have always trusted his expertise and genuine appearance to provide the best care. Sadly, my most recent experiences with Dr Bokosky have been less than good. Of course, all of my post here is my opinion only, as I cannot speak for others. It is no secret that Dr B can be rude and can treat you as if you are an idiot. It is also no secret that he is the most egotistical, short-tempered health care provider that you will ever experience. He is rude to his patients, other professionals and to his entire staff. It is very obvious that his office staff walk on eggshells around him. He raises his voice and demeans whomever has displeased him and he does this in front of the patient. I have stayed with him for so long because of his expertise but my visits with him have grown progressively just plain frightening. I have for so long excused his bad behavior. However, my last appointment was so unsettling that I ended up in tears, got out of the chair and prepared to leave immediately. Besides his normal rudeness, he was not even making any sense when talking to me. When I asked him how my eyes looked ( he had told me to make this appointment so they could dilate my eyes) he yelled at me, "I can't tell you that because your eyes aren't dilated"! My pupils were solid black and it was obvious my eyes were dilated. the assistant had to tell him my eyes were dilated. He yelled at her then! That's when I knew something was really just not right with him. I will never go back and this makes me very sad. read more

Two hours for a simple eye appt. Time with doc less than 20 though he was thorough and sat to chat if I had questions. I did not feel he was rushed at that point. The office on the other hand is a mess. People are very nice just disorganized. I waited 30 minutes for my bill as they want payment up front even from people with primary and secondary insurance. I did not have time to wait past the 30 minute mark as I had another appt. I said I would call when I returned home. I called two hours after I returned home. They still did not have my bill ready. I asked them to send it to me so I could see it. Never happened. 3 phone calls and 10 days later they send me a large file that needs a decryption code. Good grief. I'm a Hispanic from South America, legal US Citizen for the last 38 years. Speak, write and understand English perfectly. Tax paying citizen that in a time of an emergency sought out for her right to apply for Medical and got approved on the spot. I had never been discriminated against until Bokosky... My ordeal starts in Argentina, my child is there with my ex husband that has ran off California leaving me broke so I go there to try to end things well. 5 years prior I had implants put in my eyes and as my separation develops there, my body rejects them so I have to have emergency surgery to remove them leaving me legally blind!! I come back home to my sister that is a well known nurse, one of her colleagues refers me to Lee Katzman. This is December 2019, Covid is making its way! Katzman can't get me a bed at Sharp! He wants me to get the surgery ASAP so he highly refers me to John Bokosky as he owns his own surgical clinics and can operate on me NOW. I'm warned that Bokosky isn't your typical amicable sweet kind of doctor but that he's one of the best and that's all I care about. How bad can it be right??? I'm not looking for pity but getting healed. Bokosky is booked at least 2 months before but Katzman gets me to see him in 2 days! When I meet Bokosky, I'm treated as royalty! I find out later that his front desk had written CASH PATIENT by mistake on my file! Next follow up appointment before surgery he's not as friendly. I get my left eye operated on first, it goes exceptionally well!! I can see!! I can't thank him enough. So grateful. Second eye is the same. I keep doing my follow ups. He offers me an elective $12,000 surgery that is not paid by Medical that could help me even "better" I declined. All of the sudden I start getting really dry eyes on my left eye... it's unbearable, pain, burns. I have photophobia, can't open my eyes. He gets upset because he can't see inside my eyes. Puts drops and in less than a minute expects for them to work. Walks in and out going from patient to patient. Having me wait for long periods. He does this for the next 2 appointments, finally says I need Botox... Botox?? That my lids have sagged due to the trauma, I reluctantly accept... what do I know right? Well, a MONTH later when he sees me it has done NOTHING. Still can't see inside my eyes but claims I have a cataract forming.... more surgery. That I need personalized drops but that Medical won't pay for them and he assumes I can't either. I had been using the drops I was prescribed by him! He claimed that the drops had preservatives and that was to blame for my decay. I had been calling for help and was told as I was on hold to take articial tears and lots of water per doctors orders and to wait to see him on my next appt. I saw him last Dec 9th when he told me that he could not take responsibility for the people that works for him! REALLY?? He also told me on my face and I'm quoting... that he makes a NICKEL off me and that he has no time for basically Medical patients as he doesn't make enough from them. NEWSFLASH don't take them! You play around with the lives of others charging for unnecessary treatments so you make up for the "little" Medical pays you. I will make sure Medical knows about you. Sad soul. I prepared a written list of questions. I had prepared his forms in advance. I had a list of my medications. I researched the types of lenses and costs. Dr. Bokowsky was very cordial, knowledgeable and professional. He explained my situation and the risks involved. I highly recommend him as he's considered to be an excellent eye surgeon. After my cataract surgery, I continued to have cloudy vision. I complained several times and Dr. Bokosky tried to remedy the situation with minor unsuccessful surgical procedures. At my last visit in 2015 he appeared frustrated and barked at me, "I cannot see anything wrong with your eyes!" He billed for a comprehensive eye exam and dilated my eyes. He DID NOT PERFORM A PERIPHERAL VISION FIELD TEST. Had he done that test, I feel he would have discovered the GLAUCOMA that my current specialist estimates I have had for 10 to 20 years. Glaucoma is called the silent thief of vision since it can persist for years without you knowing it, slowly robbing you of peripheral vision. I now have end stage glaucoma, nearing blindness. For me, and I believe many others, his recall program was substandard. I did not receive notifications for routine exams, let alone a peripheral vision test to check for glaucoma. My grandma was scheduled for surgery a couple weeks ago for a cornea transplant, with Doctor Bokosky. My grandma is legally blind and we rely on a caretaker to drive us to her appointments. On the day of surgery, our caretaker was late, which is very out of character for her. It was a rainy morning and traffic was terrible. We ended up being 30 minutes late. When we got to pre op Doctor Bokosky came up to us very aggressively, and started shouting to my grandma and myself, saying "YOU ARE AN HOUR LATE! BECAUSE OF YOU I HAVE TO PAY 50 PEOPLE OVERTIME! I SHOULD CANCEL YOU GUYS!" Now I completely understand we are late, but given his profession I would think we are not the first to be late. We clearly did not plan on being late and we felt very bad about. My grandma cried, because she was looking forward to the surgery and hoped she would gain back some vision. So I just apologized to the doctor and did not engage him. He was very angry and I did not want to make matters worst by arguing and upsetting him more, knowing he was about to operate on my grandma. When my grandma came out of surgery she was even more upset, because she was in pain. She said she felt everything during the surgery. And it was the worst experience she's had. My grandma has had about 6 cornea transplants. Never had any issues or complications. After the surgery, my grandma developed a terrible infection in the eye Doctor Bokosky had operated on. And she really didn't want to go back to Bokosky after his outburst on surgery day and the pain she felt during and after surgery. Because of her refusal to see him, he tried to scare her into coming back to him by telling her the infection was so bad it could spread to her brain. We went to the Shelly eye center in San Diego to treat the infection and we got it under control. The staff there were friendly and kind, and told us the infection was completely manageable and would no way spread to her brain. She feeling much better now. My advice to you, is if you or a family member is referred to Doctor Bokosky, run. No bed side manners whatsoever. Just a mean man. read more

I understand that it is very stressful to be a doctor and to do multiple surgeries a day, but it is also very stressful for the patients and their families. Opthalmologist Dr. Bokosky and his team are outstanding at what he/they do. Clearly he loves what he does, and therefore he's excellent at his eye surgery and eye care of his many patients. It was our experience that he showed great compassion, and was thorough in analyzing and explaining my wife's problem, and ultimately caring enough to resolve a problem that another ophthalmologist in another practice had cavalierly dismissed as non-existent. That eye surgeon who had performed my wife's cataract operations had left a suture in one of her eyes, making her eyesight not better but much worse, blurry and even painful thereafter. Can you just imagine how such a reality could spiral down into despair? Fortunately, our Optometrist recognized the problem, so referred us to Dr. Bokosky, whose great skill managed to remove the suture, granting my wife the perfect vision she ultimately sought. To her, Dr. Bokosky is a miracle worker, and we now wish we had chosen to be his patient from the beginning. His office is extremely busy with many staff but we found each one welcoming, efficient and, caring. And yes, his office is full of patients, but bottom line, our experience is that it's well worth it to be a patient patient! Dr. Bokosky moves at a rapid pace, but long enough to explain thoroughly, directly and compassionately. He deserves an A+. read more

Dr Bokosky is a total pro. I was scheduled for laser surgery, sitting on the table ready to start, and Dr B stopped the process to check one more thing (measure twice, cut once)! After checking a new scan of my eyes, he discovered a slight anomaly that would likely have caused damage to both eyes if we proceeded with the laser surgery. While I was disappointed that I am not a candidate for this procedure, I am beyond thankful for the willingness to check everything twice before cutting my eyes! My mother is 98 years old. One eye is basically blind macular degeneration) and the other eye is kind of poor. She loves to read, and wishes that she could still see music so that she could play the piano. That being said, her new (my choice from the digital hat) optometrist did an exceptionally thorough initial evaluation. The optometrist found possible corneal issues, and suggested to Mom that she might want to visit Dr. Bokowsky, with whom she had worked previously, to see if anything could be done. I took her recommendation and made the earliest possible appointment. Prior to the appointment I did my usual research, in this case about Dr. Bokowsky. The ratings seemed to vary exactly between 5 stars and 1 star, with the 1-star ratings predominating. I'm looking at thisthinking WTF, what am I getting Mom into?? However, the more I read it seemed that there were NO medical issues complained about. None. It was all about ego and attitude. So I took Mom over to the appointment, prepared to meet the Antichrist incarnate, if some of the reviews were to be believed. The appointment was scheduled for 2:30. We arrived at 1:30 to do first-timer stuff -- paperwork, insurance cards, etc. And lots of paperwork. The usual. Lots. Mom was passed through a few hands during this process, all from staff. This included initial eye evaluations, verification that what was indicated was actually true, why she was here, etc. Makes sense to me. However, there were quite a few people waiting to see the doctor, so the whole process took quite a while, coupled with Mom's exceptionally slow dilation time. Short story - Dr Bokowsky came in slightly after 5, and did his own checks on Mom. It didn't take that long, and I wouldn't expect it to. The optometrist's Concern was with Mom's cornea. Dr. Bokowsky verified that diagnosis. He also told her that since this is her only good eye, he wants no surgical intervention. If she was only 88 years old, he might consider it. Total time: about 4 hours. Half a day for accurate information. More than worth it in my book. Especially for family. My thoughts: My working life has been as a technician. My approach tends to be logic- and goal-oriented and "net" (as in "net it out"). From what I saw, Dr. Bokowsky tends towards the same mold. I appreciate and respect that. He was about as professional and "net" as anyone could hope for, yet he was very kind to my mother. She'll go back in four months for followup - see what has changed. For those who had issues with him ... maybe see where your head was at when you made your opinions and evaluations. If you're coming from ego or entitlement, then maybe reconsider. I was referred to Dr. Bokoskyby by another opthamalogist. I spent 2 1/2 hours in his office to be seen for no more than 2 minutes. He wrote a prescription and made recommendations for what I should do about watery eyes It turns out the prescription would be $85, some eye wipes would cost $135 per month and to outfit my bed with allergy free bedding over $400. His has no compassion, is arrogant and you feel like part of a cattle herd in the office. Steer (pun intended) clear if possible. BTW I have excellent insurance, so an RX for $85/mo shows me he is unconcerned with his patients. read more

I make appointments for my 100 year old father in law, and the wait on the phone is very long. I will acknowledge it has improved from about a year ago when it usually took 20-30 minutes on the line; now it is less than 10. There are so many people in the waiting room that sometimes there is literally no place to sit, and the wait to see Dr. Bokosky is always long. My latest issue is trying to refill a prescription for my father in law. The pharmacy called for a refill on Wednesday night and when I checked with the pharmacy on Thursday, they had never heard back from the doctor's office. I then called the office on Thursday where a recording informed me to expect a 72 hour wait before they would deal with refilling prescriptions. That's ridiculous ! Today, Saturday I went to the pharmacy where they informed me they had tried a second time but had never heard back from the doctor's office. We quit. We will find a new doctor. read more
