John Chak Automotive did amazing work on my older SUV (having lived on the West Coast for several decades, my '04 had no rust, so it was worth putting in the required repairs & maintenance). Initially, I had two other mechanics look at my car and one wanted $2,700 just for the AC/heat repair! Mine needed that and balljoints & arms replaced + few more issues so the total spent was $5K but was very fair and included a 24 month or 24K miles warranty on the work completed. JCA are the first mechanics I've ever dealt with that included in the diagnosis, mphotos of every issue + returned the old parts to me. As it turns out, the previous mechanic in another state didn't perform most of the work of which I paid over $2500; he hasn't returned my four phone calls and three email inquiries for copies of my invoices, most of which were paid by cash. . .things that make ya go "hmmmm".... Everybody at John Chak Automotive is professional, efficient and friendly. I dealt with Tyler the most - 5 Stars, too! - and they performed the needed repairs in a timely manner. I am somewhat reluctant to refer businesses to others, unless I am very confident those seeking referrals will have a similar good experience, and I am truly happy to refer JCA to anyone seeking a reliable, fair and professional service establishment that operates with integrity and courtesy - that is John Chak Automotive! Our $800 Oil Change Unfortunately, we cannot recommend John Chak's Automotive Services in Denison. We took our 20-year-old car there on Thursday, November 6, for a confirmed appointment because it was making some noises. Since it also needed new tires, we wanted to be sure there were no serious mechanical problems before investing in them. A few years ago at another shop, we spent more on repairs than the car was worth, but since replacing the vehicle wasn't an option then, we paid for the fixes. We didn't want a similar situation this time, so we clearly explained to Chak's the reasons for bringing in the car, described the noises, and asked for an oil change while it was being serviced. Late Thursday afternoon, my husband called and was told the car was "in the shop right now," though they couldn't find any notes about it. On Friday, after hearing nothing, he called again, reached the closed line, and left a message. The manager returned his call within minutes, saying the car wasn't finished but was driveable; we could pick it up and bring it back Monday, and they'd have it ready by noon. When we arrived, it was clear the car hadn't been moved since drop-off. On Monday morning, we dropped the car off again. By mid-afternoon, they called to say that during the oil change, the oil pan plug had been stripped, and now a new oil pan was required--they offered no alternatives. The quote for the repair was $966, and they blamed the issue entirely on whoever had changed the oil previously. Finally, on Wednesday morning, they called to say the car was ready. When we picked it up, they admitted someone had been confused when initially telling us the car was "in the shop" the previous week. We questioned why less expensive options weren't offered, and the mechanic acknowledged alternatives did exist but didn't know why none were provided. They continued to blame the previous oil-changer, gave us a $50 discount, but added a 3.5% fee for credit card payment--bringing the total to $813.23. They couldn't really identify the source of the other noises but estimated $2,508.47 to replace various parts that might be responsible (again, more than the car is worth especially if there are unforeseen expenses). The mechanic said the car is safe to drive, so that afternoon my husband purchased new tires from a local tire store, and we will now take our time looking for a new vehicle. read more

While driving my 2021 Ram 1500, I noticed coolant leaking into my passenger floorboard with an accompany of a sweet smell (all signs pointing towards a failing heater core). Up to this point and at drop off, my AC worked as good as new. Johns' mechanics looked over the vehicle and to no surprise, it was a failing heating core. I was quoted just under $2,200 to complete the repair. After seeing how this needs to be fixed, I allowed them to do the repairs. During the repairs, the entire dash is to be dismantled, AC lines disconnected, and the entire system is to be discharged, evacuated and then recharged. After picking up my truck, about a week later, my AC stopped working. Cool air did not flow through the vents, only warm air. I called back John Chaks and told them what I was experiencing. They asked me to leave it to be inspected. The next day, I received a report that my AC was overcharged by about 1 ounce or 25 grams and that my compressor was weak. Upon learning this, I called a dealership and asked what the repercussions were for an overcharged system of this amount as a second opinion(even though I already had a strong idea due to research). Out of respect, I never mentioned names of companies and was told that it could lead to damaging of the compressor. I called back John Chaks and asked what could have caused the overcharge on my system? They responded by saying the car was actually never overcharged, a new employee put that on the ticket, and that she was going to remove it from the ticket all together (mind you I have the ticket and pictures of the gauge when they extracted the gas showing an overcharge). This worried me as soon as I was told that it was not overcharged (even though I have the evidence to prove it) and that it would be scrubbed from the ticket, almost like something was being hidden. I asked the front desk lady if she would give my number to John so that we may talk about this. The next day I received a call from John to discuss. The call was respectful. I had voiced my concerns about the AC working fine before the heater core repair, that my system was found to be overcharged and that it potentially impacted the performance and damaged the compressor (again, John Chaks was who charged my system). John stated that he had never heard of an overcharged system damaging the compressor (a quick search could refute this), that the shop can be at times a "mechanic daycare" and that sometimes their to busy to watch what mechanics put on the tickets they submit (to me this read as a way of hiding items that could be seen as negative to them if they did the work), and that the dealership I used as a second opinion was not to be reliable (pretty large ram dealership in Sherman TX). In Johns words, "I'm not going to bad mouth another shop, but I have a lot of their vehicles that come back to me". My family has used John several times over years and years and it's a shame that this is the way it ended. It really feels as though I trusted John Chaks with my truck, they damaged it (intentionally or not), attempted to hide it, and would not own up to it. read more

I scheduled an alignment, and they warned me that sometimes doing an alignment screws up the lane change, etc. cameras and reprogramming them would be expensive. They called when my car was ready and said they didn't have to reprogram anything, so it was a cheap trip to the shop. I would have never known if they had just told me they reprogrammed. Doing the right thing when you could get away with the wrong thing is the strongest proof of integrity. I heartily recommend this shop. read more

Do not, I repeat, do not take your ailing car to John Chak's. I've never been to a more cold and unfriendly place for auto repair. I needed to have the housing around the radiator cape re-fashioned. I inquired if maybe they might be able to size it back to normal. The short character, dressed like the little 'colonel' snapped, 'we're not machinists'! The younger guy kept looking up, or attempting to look, up on the computer, for a replacement part. All the while there was an unsettling quiet...the mechanics that came in and out of the main office seemed cowed and uneasy. No one offered a greeting. But all was not lost. My 77yr old husband went here first time. They have good reputation. Just after the fact getting rear brake pads & 2 rear rotors and brake fluid flush and fill it came to $630.38. I had to pay 3percent extra for credit card which brought to $649.28. After consulting other mechanics I think they are very high. Maybe they did a good job and that is why it's so expensive but we live on a poverty level social security income and all I can do is tell others on fixed income to check out other mechanics prices first. Husband and I did not do that and will now pay on that purchase for a year. If that was a normal charge we wouldn't feel bad but every mechanic says it was a 1.5 hr job max and they charged us 3 hours labor. Please be aware. read more

I have taken several vehicles to John Chak's over the years and the work has always been done right the first time. Most recently I took my new to me Dodge Charger that had leaked oil into the cooling system. Doris found out that my extended warranty would not cover the part But that the manufactures warranty would!! This saved me a huge chunk of money!! Money I could have been paying to them ... but they have again earned my trust knowing that they will treat Me and my car right. My Mom came in to town and her Jeep broke down not long after getting here. I took her to John Chaks because I KNOW her vehicle will be fixed quickly and the job will be done Right. My wife took our car into their shop last summer. They told her she needed about $4000 worth of work for a 2003 Hundai. The major problem was that the AC compressor had gone out. They told me on the phone that there were no compressors under $750 dollars...I researched the item online and could not find any that were over $350..? Ended up taking it to a shop in Pottsboro and got everything done ( including wheel bearings & AC) for about $1000. Moral to the story, if they quote you a price, get a 2nd opinion. Went there in 2011 to get a belt replaced on my truck. John emailed me a quote, and I did some research to find that it was a very reasonable price. So I brought it in, and they fixed it in no time. 5 years later, came back with a new vehicle, even a new look, and not only did he remember me, but fixed my mirror for cheaper than anywhere else I took it. We were heading back from vacation over the weekend and our water pump went out and the truck overheated. Stranded on the highway, I called roadside assistance and they towed my truck to this repair shop and dropped us at a hotel. This was obviously unplanned and we had no rental car, no room reservations and were hours from home. We got a room and the next morning my husband called the shop at 8:30 am. He explained our situation and they promised to have our truck done by checkout so we wouldn't have to pay for another night. They had our truck done in less than three hours, picked us up at hotel and had us on the road before noon (and at a reasonable price) I would definitely use them again!!
