It's perhaps a trifle untimely that I am writing this review at this point rather than later on, as…read moreI shall have to pay John Quill a visit in the near future, as I lost the last pair of glasses that John prescribed me the last night I was in Rí-Rá. It's unlikely that I shall have sufficient liquidity to replace them anytime soon though, so I might as well squint at the computer screen and write the review now. Quill's have been serving the health and well-being, ocular and otherwise, of the good people of Killester for nigh on forty years. Dennis Quill, John's father, ran a chemist where John's office currently is; John opened his optician practice when his father died almost twenty years ago. John is very pleasant man, and has been the optician for two generations of my myopic family. I got my first pair of glasses from John about two years ago, my eyesight worsening later than is customary for a member of my family. John is a very friendly and jovial man, and tested my eyes in no time at all. He then asked me to pick out frames for my glasses; I had been apprehensive about this part, as I was worried that he would only stock a range of terribly old-man, unfashionable frames (my Dad also gets his glasses from John Quill). However, the first frames he suggested looked great, they used to make me look the right hot nerd, I'm very pissed off that I lost them. So when I am feeling profligate enough to consider splashing out on non-blurry vision, John Quill's in Killester will be my first port of call.

They repaired it within a few hours and brought it back to me at work the same day. I spoke to an employee on the phone the day before I had the courier come pick up my phone for them to repair it. The guy on the phone was friendly and helpful. I wanted to see how the phone worked for awhile after repair. And about a month later it has been great and the battery is like new. The only odd thing that happened in the first few days after repair was that the screen wouldn't respond to touch. The volume, lock and home button worked but the screen was on and wouldn't respond to touch. I did a few hard resets and it would go back to normal and hasn't happened since, but it was a little nerve wrecking at first. Other than that I would return here for other repairs.

A few weeks later, the screen shattered from a fall of less than a meter - onto a wooden floor - with a protective case on. I returned and was charged another €200 for a second replacement. This time, they added a screen protector - something they should have done in the first place. Not long after, a blue inky patch appeared on the top left of the screen and gradually spread, making the phone completely unusable. Crucially, the phone had not been dropped, hit, or damaged in any way after the second repair. When I went back, they made me wait over an hour while the phone was supposedly being "assessed" (it just sat untouched on a desk). Eventually, I was told I'd need another new screen--and that it wasn't their fault after spending EU550 with them on two screens. Ended up getting it fixed properly by another provider for €150. Bottom line: Terrible customer service, poor-quality parts, and you'll find better prices and reliability elsewhere. Avoid ExpressTech at all costs.

Ironically the two consultants I met first, had been trained in Specsavers and to be honest they were lovely, but the owner/optician who did the final consultation was awful.I felt pushed into getting a pair of bi focal glasses with top end frames and they really were no fit for purpose. I returned in a couple of weeks to say that I just could not see the computer properly and I had stated that this was my main reason for needing the glasses. The owner dismissed me and said I just needed to get used to them. A year later, I am almost a thousand euro down, the expensive frames broke and the glasses are useless to me.Never again !

Okay, I'm getting carried away here, they really do have some really nice frames but they're all top drawer stuff, most of them are titanium, and all of them are on the pricey side. The staff couldn't be nicer, even when a scruff like me, obviously not wearing glasses, walks in for a poke about I was greeted cordially. So, if I ever need glasses, and have a little more change than usual jingling about in my pocket, I'll hit MacNally Opticians.
