It's sad. They put produce out, but so much of it goes unsold, yet still sits out there way past the point where it should have been tossed. In order to have a good produce section you have to hire a produce manager who just loves vegetables and fruit. I mean, obsesses over it, to the point where the store decides to invest in produce cases in order to keep it fresh. They don't do that here. Today, I looked at Broccoli crowns and they were all soft. Ditto that with the loose carrots. It was sad. read more

My husband returned today to Brooks. They saw fit to refund $ for meat. I appreciate that. I had strong words with the manager the day before then I called back to apologize. I was still mad but it was the right thing for me to do. I am glad the manager was professional enough to see beyond the argument . The good news I can keep going to John Brooks. I was impressed, i had not been to a John brooks since we lost the SE one. Its small, but clean and well stocked, if you want to shop local, its got a nice variety of NM products all through the place, stuff looks as good or better quality than smiths or albertsons.. people were super nice, you don't even have to empty your own cart. They hire real people to checkout and bag, and was even met at my car by a employee in a wheelchair to haul my cart back in. Wow its like how groceries were 40 years ago... Found local cheeses, Anasazi beans, good looking produce. This was a win. Far from home but will shop here again. read more

This store is outrageous in price and they sell nothing but out-dated food and very old produce.

I really love this store. It has almost everything that I need. Oftentimes, I stop by John Brooks several times a day. Despite this store having a smaller footprint, they carry most of what I need. My trips to larger stores take longer because they're farther away, and I have to walk around to find everything. Here, I can get what I need more quickly. John Brooks stocks mostly brand-name items, but they carry generic items, too. That means saving a dollar or two for the generic item, over the brand-name item. read more

Johnny. Johnny, sit down. Let's talk about who you are today and what your future holds, can we? Let me ask you, are you happy? Are you satisfied with what you've accomplished, are you where you want to be? Where do you see yourself ten years from today? Go on, be honest. Really? You mean that. You think you're doing "just fine". Well. Okay. Well, since you asked, I'll be honest: I think we all expected a lot more from you. You've always had potential. And I can imagine there was a time, not so long ago, when you provided some valuable meat and produce to the neighborhood. Back then, the Valley was a community of Old School New Mexican families, families who had matanzas, and baked scores of biscochitos each Christmas, and made the best enchiladas in the world. And to some extent, that's still true. You still serve that demographic. You do this very well. You know what? You deserve a sticker for your hard work. There, there you go. Do you like your unicorn sticker? So anyway. A new generation of people now reside in the Valley, and to be honest, you haven't been paying attention. You've refused to adapt, to change, and for a business, that can spell death. When I wander your aisles, I can feel the Grim Reaper breathing on the suspect meat section, the cardboard-skinned tomatoes, and the discount greens which will go bad tomorrow in that refrigerator. I suppose I'm being a little harsh, here. You did update the freezer section and you renovated the liquor department big time, and you now feature an acceptable variety of micro brews. But a man cannot live on pot pies and porter alone. This new generation of Valley residents actually cares about eating produce that wasn't picked in Argentina and will drop a lot more cash on a bite to eat if they know it's nutritious. I think you need to re-evaluate your life, Johnny. I think it's time. You're not competing with anybody here, and dammit, I'm sick of driving across town for groceries. As a child, going to John Brooks and getting a wink and a smile from long-time manager Jackie was always a treat. I remember when the store burned down and everyone was devastated by the thought they would not rebuild--but they did! Moving back to the neighborhood after decades away, I'm so glad to return to the friendly customer service of a neighborhood institution. You know how when you go to Trader Joe's everyone is friendly and talks to you? And the layout is cozy and homey feeling? Good on TJ's for that winning business strategy. But at John Brooks, it's ALWAYS been that way, and it feels extra genuine. Even after years away, it feels like I'm checking out with a long lost relative. Unlike many of the other grocery stores I've visited in ABQ recently, service is very efficient as well. The checkout line is always quick, and if you ask for something like, say, another variety of the Christmas cookie tins they are already putting away because the holiday has passed, within seconds they are pulling out the packed box from the store room to let you pick through and find the tin of your dreams. ;) I'm not totally sure what the hipsters are complaining about regarding selection. Last time I was there I noticed vegan tamales, gluten free burritos, Amy's and Annie's organics lines, almond milk, kombucha in several varieties, Earth Balance butter spread, etc. It may not be Whole Foods, but it's not stuck in the past either. I will concur that not everything in the produce section is always amazing, but with the Fruit Basket a block away, who cares? And one thing I really appreciate is the fact that John Brooks stocks a LOT of local, made-in-New-Mexico products that you can't get everywhere. It's not perfect - the displays when you first walk in can feel a little cluttered, and the hipster in me wishes Horizon wasn't the organic milk brand they sell, but overall, this is a solid place that I am so glad is in the neighborhood. read more

The store often has what I need. I agree with the other reviewers who note that they typically have items you wouldn't expect that are gluten free, organic, sugar-free, New Mexico products, higher-end, and those from overseas. They even have a small liquor store with a decent selection. I'd have to say that sometimes the produce freshness can be hit-or-miss, but that's often the case in a grocery store that's not well visited for those types of items. But, this is a better store than their neighbor that's just a little bit northeast of this corner, who has avery limited selection, and it is certainly friendlier, and more enjoyable, than their larger competition...further north in the valley. I know my visit will always be quick. I love to go there on Saturday mornings when there's not a lot of people around. read more

I usually go here for laundry detergent and downey. The detergent I buy NEVER rings up correctly and they have to send someone to check the price EVERY SINGLE TIME!! well today I went in for oxy clean and dryer sheets, There was one cashier working at 1230 pm on a Sunday afternoon, there was 15 people in line and they wouldn't get another cashier even after 2 people asked. One employee was yelling at the cashier that "She was going to the bathroom if that was okay with everyone". I just set my stuff down on the closed register and went next door to Family Dollar. Absolutely NO customer service!! Get more employees or get a manager to help get the lines down no one wants to wait in a line of 15+ people. If I wanted to do that I would go to Wal-Mart. They are cheaper and even they have more than 1 register open and at least they have self checkout to make up for their lack of employees. read more

This is the grossest grocery store I've ever been to. It's right by my house, and sometimes I'm just lazy enough to pop in for a few staples. First of all, it smells like old fried chicken grease. I bought some yogurt here and while I was eating it I noticed a cigarette smell, perhaps they smoke in the back by the cooler. My yogurt container was so gross and smokey smelling I had to throw it away. I feel sad for the produce that have to live here. If you do find yourself unfortunate enough to be shopping here, check the dates on everything, I often encounter expired food on the shelves. read more

First the good: great location for North Valley dwellers who don't shop at the Co-op. Interesting mix of items on the shelves - if you look there are some pretty cool specialty goodies. Pretty decent wine/beer selection. Very friendly employees and nice neighborhood feel. It's local. The room for improvement part: Please update this store! It's run-down. When a building and fixtures get this old, there is no way to get them clean or get rid of that stale smell. Go take a look at the Lowe's on Lomas. That place used to be nasty as they get. The store was closed for some time for renovations. What a transformation!! And guess what? They didn't lose any of their old customers, and sure seems like they gained a whole lot of new ones. I'd be sooo happy if John Brooks followed suit, as would many other people in the neighborhood. The near North Valley needs a decent, clean store that doesn't charge $9/lb for garlic. Admittedly, perhaps the powers that be are reluctant to sink money into a store located in a pretty derelict strip mall. But.....what if they lead the way? Maybe other more desirable businesses would move in, thus improving the whole block. Just a thought. In the meantime, I will still go there for a few things here and there, but go somewhere else for the bulk of my grocery shopping. read more

Shop here almost daily. They frequently have "stuff " the bigger grocery stores do not. Plus its locally owned, so money spent here does not find its way to a corporate office in some far away state. In my opinion it's another north valley secret. read more

Nicest place to shop the people are real friendly couldn't find an item ask for help they took me right to it. The produce was nice and fresh the produce guy was cleaning it up. lettuce looked a little wilted he said he was putting new stuff out now said he was sorry and went to back got me some new lettuce. Let me start with what this grocery store is not: it's not a COSTCO, Walmart or a Sam's Club - no Five Stars. It is also not any way competition for the Smith's or Albertson's - no Four Stars. It's one of those rare neighborhood stores that is still hanging on because not everyone can or wants to drive miles for groceries - Three Stars. The selection for all goods is narrow simply because of the size of the store - more 1960's size. Other reviews have criticized Brooks because it's lacks business focus and seems to be all over the place - I think they are focused on meeting the needs of their community. If they weren't around a lot of folks would be going to the high price convenience stores. I do have to say that they have a pretty good selection of wines in a very reasonable price range. So, for me - between the milk and the wine Brooks meets my needs and I am sure many other needs within the neighborhood. read more
