I've been shopping at this Smith's five to seven days a week for the last three years. The staff is on point, the store is always clean and pleasant, I've not once had something I was looking for be out of stock. The guy behind the deli counter provides exemplary customer service, as does the bakery department. All of the cashiers are extraordinarily personable and willing to provide any assistance when asked. The lines move swiftly and the self-checkout always has one or more helpful employees on the spot. The long running employees are a staple of the neighborhood community and the newer ones are always bright and hard-working which speaks highly of the hiring manager. All of the employees are great to have around, even the quieter ones. Lastly, in a neighborhood that can be a little intimidating to some, the security team keeps an excellent eye on everybody and everything. Thanks to them I feel absolutely safe while shopping there, which unfortunately I am unable to to say about some neighborhoods. You can tell that the entire staff cares a whole lot about the well-being of the store, the neighborhood and the community. Long live "Ghetto" Smith's, the heart of the Student Ghetto. read more

6/10/2026 at approximately 5:24pm I was having a conversation with the blond lady with short straight hair, 30s or 40s, who was doing the checkout isle. I have multiple disabilities and when we were talking, she said i was screaming at her. Then got security on me so I REACTED to her abuse so i cussed. But I have a disability and i explained that and no one cared. I was stripped from human decency and all respect. They humiliated me and the security guard said " you won't do anything pussy." He DID call me the F slur. i was genuinely excited and happy to talk with this employee and she for whatever irrational reason said i was screaming at her. I was just having a normal conversation about hairspray as a working disabled individual. I come here every morning or at least 4 times weekly and will gladly take my business elsewhere. They don't even treat their customers like humans. I have never been so mistreated by an employee. PLEASE CONTACT ME PERSONALLY BEFORE THIS ESCALATES. I WILL KEEP REACHING TO HIGHER MANAGEMENT. AND AM SEEKING LEGAL COUNCIL. there could potentially be concerns under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This is a small grocery store in Albuquerque. The parking lot is tight, and has random oil slicks. There are homeless people all around. There was an alert security officer monitoring the front door. The interior is cramped, and looks both neglected and unclean. Perhaps a remodel would help? The isles are narrow and have cardboard displays in the way as well. It is difficult for shop carts to pass one another. They have a whole host of self checkout lines, which moved well. I doubt I will ever be returning to this place again. read more

My neighborhood and they made us go into a special wine and Kobe the African-American gentleman that he is insisted that we go back to his line and by the way I'm being completely facetious and sarcastic, calling him a gentleman. We just moved into his neighborhood and never come back to this place and see why they steal from them because they treat everybody like a felon. My husband has tattoos all up and down his arms and he was in a wife beater, but he has moved us all day long and he has two jobs so if they would like to treat people differently that are white and poor, as they assumed we were, we we aren't far from it, but we are spending our hard earned money there , well once , my husband just got done telling me he won't come back as well so they just lost two different paychecks just on him alone. Lol that's what you get when you treat every single customer that spends money with you like they've already stolen from you now who really stole from who? We walked out of there having paid money to be treated like sh*t. I moved to say, they stole the decency and integrity of our night. They stole their ability to make money off of us in the future. They stole any chance they had of being a grocery store we frequent ever for the history of us living in this town, which might not be long at this rate My advice is to go to whatever grocery store is closer even if it's a bit further away even if it's Lowe's grocery store, it's better than dealing with people that talk down to you and treat you that badly after you spend $100 with them. Went there for the first & last time. The aisle was very narrow & over crowded. Could it get past other people with the shopping cart. Was very disappointed that there were no fresh salads in the deli area. There was only one cashier at checkout on a Saturday night. Oh gosh. There's a reason they call this the "ghetto Smith's." Get ready for an adventure when you step inside! This Smith's is located near UNM so I'm going to pretend that is why the liquor is literally under lock and key and not the other more colorful customers who make their way to this shopping wormhole. By the way, keep your purse close! The good news is they do have multiple self-checkout lanes for fast departure. I'm bumping Smith's back to two stars for a couple of reasons. First, the employees work so hard, I have to give them some credit. It's not an easy job. Second, I had some fried chicken from the deli recently, and it blew my mind. Must've been a fresh batch, still hot, with a perfect crispiness, so tender and tasty. I'm very impressed with this fried chicken. So yeah, in general I consider this store and its management to be far from perfect, but credit where it's due: great team of employees, and awesome fried chicken. read more

I have been a customer for over 25 years. I have had nothing but, problems from interactions from the employees who work there. This last event that happened to me was the final straw. I was already having to question going back after the health department closed this store for uncleanness for bad fruit, vegetables, and meat being sold but, when there customer service woman was yelling at me twice and there manager who has been at this store since I first started shopping there, did not put a stop to her behavior ( and I really started feeling threatened by her behavior ) I finished my return of merchandise I had bought that was dried out and rotten. I stated that was the final straw, and not to worry, I won't ever return to this store or any other smiths store in the future. Complaining does not work. Management does not care, nor does the corporation care how there customers are being treated. It's upsetting that this is ok with them. Well thats ok, I am taking my debit card and spending my grocery money I spend monthly ( 1,000.00 plus dollars a month) to Albertsons. Tired of the lack of caring and abuse from there poor choices in hiring and managing bad choices in employment staff. I watched the manager giving high fives to his bagger boys with his head in The clouds when clearly there many problems that he should have been addressing ( the actual description of his job title) I am only one customer ( me, my husband and adult daughter) used to get our prescriptions, gas, food at this store. So maybe I am just one customer but, my business probably funded one to two employees employment. That's why you shouldn't treat your customers like dirt when they are shopping. Maybe they need to learn that before they will do something about there management team and hiring of employees. The fact that I started thinking, should I be recording this, is so very bad. This location is very small but well cared for. They don't have as much selection as other stores, but they have all the essentials you'll need for grocery shopping. The staff are friendly and helpful but the store is always busy so finding someone might be hard; however, I've always received the help I needed. Alright, I'll admit that for a while their produce section, especially the organic produce, was underwhelming. Since maybe about March, 2015, they have expanded the organic section and improved the care of the produce such that it's all VERY fresh. And we all know Smith's prices cannot be beat. Personally, I am enjoying some majorly luxurious afternoons eating Smith's mini watermelons (2 for 1 while supplies last), white nectarines and 2/$5.00 berries outside on my porch. I usually like Smith's. This location, however, has me nervous and on my toes when I go there. The employees are GREAT. Most of the patrons are wonderful, however, there are usually panhandlers outside. In about half of my visits there, there has been some sort of issue. Either someone trying to walk out without paying for a cart full of groceries, someone arguing about alcohol, the employees having to escort people out because they were "loitering" and the darker it gets outside, the more questionable the outside of the store gets. Don't get me wrong, the store itself is just right. Small, they have great produce, and I can be in and out in minutes. So I will keep going there, but I'll go at a decent hour. Convenient, but you get a lot of panhandlers asking for money outside. Because of it being a smaller store, selection on certain items can be limited. I came in today and got some chicken tenders which I mistakenly thought were going to be hot and ready to eat because they came from the hot food section. They were room temperature at best, so I had to heat them up when I got home. However, the service is usually good. Charles is a great cashier, very friendly and quick to correct things if a sale price isn't ringing up. You also can't beat the produce here. I like it better than Trader Joe's and Sprouts produce. I've had terrific experiences shopping here. It's not fancy, but it has a terrific selection and I always find what I'm looking for. Produce are fresh. Prices are terrific, too. Staff consistently go above and beyond. They offer friendly greetings, sincere thank you's and give a cheerful goodbye. They do a great job packing my groceries. I enjoy shopping here. I shop at every grocery brand in Albuquerque, including Whole Foods, and Smith's is my favorite one of all. People seem surprised when I tell them I shop there and confused when they hear this specific Smith's location (on Yale) is my favorite. What can I say, I like good service and down to earth people! The staff are customer-centered in a way you rarely see - just people taking care of people - no pomp and circumstance, no patting ourselves on the back for shopping in the organic sections. If you want organic, no hormones, or no HFCS, they offer it; maybe not 12 choices but it's there. If you use WIC, not only is there no judgement but the store is labeled to make it easy for you to identify what qualifies. There are orange WIC stickers next to price tags throughout the store. Yes, the aisles are a little narrow & they don't always have everything I'm searching for but I never leave empty handed. I also don't spend heaps of time comparing those 12 versions of one item you may find in other stores, resulting in much speedier shopping. I gave them 4 stars because the parking lot is a test in patience and paying attention. It's cramped and oddly shaped with poor access/exit points. (No, it wasn't due to safety concerns. An old school ode to a one-time second home of mine, the one and only Ghetto Smiths: Friday night, school's out, I'm livin' in the Student Ghetto and there's a party going on somewhere, doesn't matter where, all I need is a six pack and my sneakers, I'll find it. Don't need a car, I'm just down the street. Everybody's just down the street, and hey, there's Eli from Modern Lit, he's grabbin' a bag of the fake Froot Loops, damn right. Give him a pound. What's that? Party on Princeton? I'm there. The night is still young, there's time for ramen. Think I'll spruce it up with a loaf of that garlic bread that comes in the oven foil; for a couple bucks, it'll soak up whatever I'm drinking tonight. Best buy in the entire spot, and I'm a connoisseur. Gotta get some donuts for the morning, some OJ. And bacon. Hopin' I might be cooking someone breakfast in bed. Chasin' the roaches out of the corners of the room. I don't have a conscience about what I'm eating because my options are all right here, in front of me. Somebody once told me this particular location was the highest-grossing store of the entire franchise. Makes sense. Makes me think the organic/health food section is a pittance of recognition that some of us students care about what we eat, so I somehow respect it. Not that I'm buying any of it, hey, I'm a student. But props to those Smiths folks. Time to grab beer. I think I'll stand in front of the cooler for the next 20 minutes in the hopes of finding some new brew, which inevitably won't be found. Wondering why they won't improve the brew selection here. Glad I'm not buying the hard stuff, because that would require alerting some overworked staffer to unlock the shelf. This must be the only liquor section I know of, in the entire city, that keeps those bottles locked away. Finally, my favorite ritual: the checkout. Weekends are insane, yo. If this store even competes for big profits, you'd never know it staring at these lines. This place could use a serious remodel, but that'll never happen. But all is good when I get my chance to pay for my OJ, my bacon, donuts, bread and beer. Before me stands an icon of this cathedral, a middle-aged tatted and pierced woman who may offer an iced expression but retains her status as one of so many, many great employees who for some reason never seek another job. Bravo to you, tatted and pierced woman, and all of your co-workers, for your devotion to the Ghetto Smiths. I'll be back tomorrow and everyday following that until I either move out of the Ghetto or earn my degree. Well this use to be my go-to store since I live in the neighborhood but not anymore. A week ago I found 6 bottles of wine in the parking lot and stupid me turned them in. Later that week we went to buy some groceries and paid with a twenty. The cashier hands me two dollars for a 10 and some change purchase then proceeds to tell me I handed her a 10. Then the manager calls me a liar until he checked the tapes and realized I wasn't. Hands my daughter-in-law my right change and doesn't even look me in the eye. I will never go to this Smith's again. I feel like I need to to explain something to our transplanted friends. This is called the "Ghetto Smith's" because it's in the area known to locals as the "Student Ghetto." It's actually nicer than other Smith's locations I've been to. Looks like the produce is out partying at the Smith's on Carlisle. What remains: a happy family of avocados, essential fruits (apples, bananas, oranges), and a forlorn selection of greens. Perfect for the five minute blitz around the store, but unsatisfying for anything more than the fundamentals. Frequent ice cream sales and rapid moving check out lines make this Smith's an attractive and desirable place to obtain food. Closest and cheapest, the red glare of the Smith's sign creates a strong magnetism for empty stomachs. read more

Any grocery store that isn't Trader Joe's or Sprouts/Sunflower can't get higher than 3 stars, so I'll just come out and say that immediately. However, this place isn't that bad really, especially for it's proximity to my house and to UNM and CNM, and for selling beer later than Jubilation of Quarters. There's really not much else you can say about a place like this. They do sell plenty of local favorites like salsas, tortillas and Hatch green chile, so that's appreciated, and it's nice to find some New Belgium beers among bottled urine they sell, otherwise this place is run-of-the-mill. Two good reasons to come here ever are that it's pretty easy to get in and out of almost always---especially considering they have those job-killing registers where one can ring him/herself up---and they are open pretty late (12 I think?). read more

Horrible experience with main manager; very unprofessional, ill mannered, power crazed and rude I went in there to conduct a secret shopping review and the first manager allowed me to stay and as she approached me towards the end of my shift told me to delete my pictures I would not seeing as though I was at the end of my shift and had spent another 40 minutes there after the first manager let me stay- she wouldn't leave my side, she was in my face and made an unnecessary scene, she was taking pictures of me and putting her hand in front of my camera. I had her staff running after me, it was so ridiculous. I was only doing my job and did nothing wrong. Also, the store is too small and overpacked with 'stuff'. Oh, Howie K., how you've hit it on the nose. This sweet Smith's location is definitely "the one and only Ghetto Smith's" Living down the street and around the corner from this location is treat. It's close to most, and is priced the way most Smith's/Kroger/Fry's tend to be. The parking lot tends to be slight shenanigans during peak hours so choose your times wisely. But all the above, from the deli, produce, dairy, and other products, Ooohhhh! Mexican Cokes, they have those, but shouldn't they...? But wait! That's not what I was trying to get at, and not why this location is grand. Are you ready? It's the people and the people watching. Lawd! It's good, oh, so, good! There is many a character that wanders this store on a daily basis. I'm half tempted to work here for a few hours a week in order to bask in the glory that are the customers here. This is the basic grocery store. And I don't mean basic as in the term used by millennials but more like it's literally basic. It won't have any more than what you will need as far as brands and quantity of selection. It is not Wegmans or Trader Joe's. It's not even Vons or Jon's. It's not Vallerta. It literally is Smith's. The staff was great and very helpful and kind. Parking lot was a bit small but it was correlated to the size of the store which was small. They also had two sections of milk and other dairy products so that was a bit confusing and a small section for health and more outlier brands of protein and vitamins. Their spirits and wine selection was larger though than the entire back area I feel. I will go here only if I have to and it's convenient. Otherwise, nothing too special. read more

This place is really not that bad. It's on the small side for a Smith's, sure, but they still have deli, liquor, and produce departments, and the store is pretty well organized in what space they have available. Parking is spacious for the neighborhood. It's not actually DANGEROUS--you might see a drunk or a panhandler hanging around outside, but they have security posted all the time. They recently got a small self check-out section which is nice. But I try to go through the staffed checkouts to keep people in a job. The cashiers here are always friendly, especially the older blonde lady who calls everybody "my dear" and "my love." If you live south of UNM, you coooooould drive up to the Smith's on Carlisle and Constitution if you want a bigger store with a slightly better selction... But the Smith's on Yale is just so much closer and more convenient. As befits a university-area store, the liquor section at this store tends towards wine coolers, premixed flavored drinks, beer, and cheap wine. There is a small liquor selection that you have to ask a staff member to unlock for you. read more
