Dave Bowman showed up at the job site several times throughout the day which was reassuring. The crew of plumbers were very professional, courteous, and informative. When they were done they did a thorough job of cleaning up. I will be using Young and Bowman for all my future projects. I highly recommend Young and Bowman.

When the plumber came he said Moen is the worst brand and then told us we bought the wrong kind, we need cordless. When my fiancé tells him that we were told by the woman he spoke to when he made the appointment we didn't need a specific garbage disposal, he said we can't listen to the office because "they are just two women who don't know what they're talking about".... Yikes! The plumber was impatient with us for buying the wrong garbage disposal, and said he couldn't do anything and wouldn't be able to come back for days. I walked out of the room and my fiancé stayed with him asking what we should do - we just need to get a new garbage disposal that doesn't have a cord. So we call the office when the plumber leaves to see when we can get another appointment and the woman says tomorrow. Great. Then we get a call back and the woman says the plumber won't be returning to our home because we did not take his advice and he's an expert of 25 years and she hung up on us. Steer clear of these guys.

I asked for Brian again because he did such a good job on his prior visit, and he warned me then that the basement utility tub had problems. Brian demoed and removed the very heavy old soap stone utility tub and faucet and replaced them with a new plastic tub securely anchored to the wall and the floor, a new faucet, and he replaced three old gate valves with ball valves. He is one of the few plumbing experts who knows how to install flange on broken cast iron sewer pipes. Our toilet on first floor leaked subtly in the past 10-20 years due to improper installation. When I found this issue by identifying a rusted bolt, it was too late, all wood floors underneath were rotted. I quote several plumbers. Two of them advised to break partial or all concrete floors and replace the cast iron pipe with PVC pipe, then rebuild the concrete floor. One plumber even suggest to remodel the whole bathroom, which would cost a few thousand at least. A couple others declined due to the complication of the work. Then Joe appears, he offered to remove the old flange at no cost. I believe his confidence made him do that. And he offered a very reasonable price for installation of a new flange on the cast iron pipe and toilet. He offered all accessories free of charge, which not many plumber does. I will give Joe two thumbs up. He's man we can rely on. Now I am waiting to buy another 2 toilets and have him come back to install.

Before the second visit, I asked Sean what the estimate would be, since he was rushed to get the work done on a Saturday. I specifically said that there was no rush for the project, and he insisted they come out right away because he had double booked his projects. He said the estimate would be 'give or take $500.' Let me just say that the wall was left completely open from the washing machine. That's fine, since they were upfront about the need to have a contractor come repair the wall, but this was not included in the price. I received a bill for $550. I paid the bill, and the next day I received an additional bill for $280. I called and left a voicemail to speak with someone regarding this, and received no call back. I called a week later, and received a call direct from Sean. He was insistent that this was my fault since I did not request a formal documented estimate. Okay... I said maybe it is, since I trusted the verbal estimate he had given us. This plumber came recommended from the previous owner, so I just assumed they were trustworthy. I said to him, I understand we are on the hook. However it's a really horrible situation since we had been upfront about just moving, have a newborn, and were very tight on money. If we had known it would be almost $800 for 2 hours of work not including repair, I would have said no. Not right now. None of it was urgent, he insisted he come out within 3 days on a Saturday to do the work. He reinforced how I should have asked for a documented estimate and began to yell about how "I don't know what to tell you. I have kids. I have my own bills. I have my own bills to pay that would buy your house." Needless to say, said thank you anyway and hung up the phone. I would absolutely never recommend this company. They should be ashamed how they operate, and speak to people.

I contacted Hirschberg because I had used them previously for a couple of small jobs. This time I…read moreneeded a toilet fill valve replaced, a hot water faucet repaired, and possible insertion of a bidet wand on one toilet. I had the fill valve purchased new from Home Depot as I thought it would save me money to have my own new part. I also had the bidet wand. As is typical for some companies today there was a charge to come out--not to be applied towards my bill. The young man came in to see what the work was and then out to the truck to call the office on pricing. I told him/showed him, the fill valve I had purchased. He told me they will not use customer provided parts. I asked him to ask the office again about this policy , he did, and nothing changed. His pricing for these 3 jobs was over $900. I told him I wanted parts and labor to be itemized. Answer was 'we don't do that', 'we have flat fee pricing'. Between the cost and their refusal to use the new part I bought, I told him to only handle the fill valve part of the job however I insisted on an invoice with parts and labor itemized. Again, they refused to do so. I called the office to speak to the service manager, and he again refused to comply with my request, again repeated the flat fee pricing. In the end I got no-where. I asked to see the box the new fill valve came in--no surprise--same company part as what I had purchased. Cost for the 11 minutes max it took him to replace the part? $373.12 to include the $79. arrival charge. Did not get an itemized bill. What are they hiding? Knowing cost of parts and cost of labor is a routine and reasonable request of a customer, and many companies automatically provide this information without being asked. Addendum: I had the other 2 parts of the initial job completed by another company for $265.00 and automatically received an itemized bill. Note that even combining the two companies charges, the total is not close to exceeding $900 which Hirschberg quoted when they job costed initially.
