Last time I checked good recall should be as soon as you say your dogs name they come or stay next to you not the million times you have to yell it. I love this lake for my dog but the owners of other dogs there ruin it with their lack of control and arrogance. Not all dogs are expected to have play dates, "socialize", or hangout with their dogs there. My dog just wants to swim, play fetch, and be left alone by other dogs without them trying to assert their dominance over him. People are so entitled there and lazy.

The first is yes, water would be great. I'm so used to those great people/pup drinking fountains around town that I stupidly didn't bring my pups water. Luckily a very nice fellow dog parent allowed mine to sip some of his dog's. Also--poop bags! I've seen them at other parks. In fact, I'm pretty sure swift run has them, which is why I didn't bring any with me. Thankfully another nice pup parent gave me one when we needed one. Parking can be dicey but it's a lovely stroll through the park to get there. Also, after 5 PM you can park at Kellogg Eye Center which is just on the other side of the bridge. Not too bad! My pups love it and I love not having to drive far to get here so in general it's a winner. Just come prepared with water and baggies.

I couldn't be happier about a place where my dog can just be a dog and meet other dogs (dogs, dogs, dogs!!). The park is HUGE and split into two parts (small and timid dogs on one side and big dogs on the other). I like this feature because it can be intimidating for an owner to watch their small 5 Ibs chihuahua try to run and keep up with the bigger breeds. The park usually has bowls for water and a fresh water supply (but it is turned off in the winter months). The park provides plastic bags to pick up after your dog and deposit his/her business in the receptor. They also salt around the park (during the icy season) with paw-friendly salt so you don't have to worry about it hurting your pal. As a visitor of the park, you'll need to register your information with the city and get a key fob. Novi shares its dog park with the city of Northville so as members, you can take advantage of both locations. The park is a fantastic avenue for dogs to get out their energy and play with their own kind. My dog enjoys the park so much and I enjoy it too because he sleeps for hours on end after a visit :-)

Now, that week we got a crazy ton of rain so it's natural for places, like this dog park, to flood in spots. But what isn't great is the smell after your dog makes his way out of the mud. I didn't notice at first but once I put him in the car I could smell it. He smelled like wet trash, manure, and mud all mixed together. Not great! I actually drove straight to my mom's house because she has a detachable shower head so I could properly wash him underneath. Even his harness reeked and required a thorough scrub. Why did he smell so bad? It's not just poo from dogs that wasn't picked up. No, I came to learn from my husband later that day that Swift Run was built on a landfill. No wonder he smelled like wet garbage! He literally trudged through it! When it's dry, it's not a problem. But be aware and careful when it's wet! And bring a towel and maybe a bottle of water to rinse your pup off. And a huge bottle of febreeze for your car!

A frequent visitor of the park told us these break-ins have been happening on and off for the past 10 years! TEN YEARS?! Yet you find no signs to be vigilant or security cameras on the property. For a park you are required to pay for and have a permit for, you would think they would solve this issue. Even a simple "surveillance" sign would suffice. Now for the actual dog park: As you enter the park there are giant pot holes all along the drive. Inside the park there is no running water, which leads dogs to drink out of dirty puddles they've been playing in. Patrons due their best to fill metal dishes sitting around but this just leads to dog drinking from still water that you have no idea how low it's been sitting there. The only positives are the grass is mowed and the poop bags are stocked, which is the bare minimum for a dog park.

When we came in we were greeted by a worker and asked if we needed assistance. Asked about prices on mealworms. Sheet is on the table. Asked about spiders, took us straight to the spiders! Sadly - I think the business would be better off with hiring more employees or cutting down on animals to keep up with housekeeping. It's understandable being short staff nowadays but the poor animals don't deserve to be in dirty tanks or crammed spaces. Many meals, accessories and supplies to choose from for your pet. We spent a good thirty minutes in the store. It is a decently sized store - when you think you hit the end you hit another corner. Kid-friendly. We had a friendly older gentleman who informed us of the sea hare slugs that surrounded the tree that was growing in a water tank. It was pretty cool!
