Came here on a Friday when it was packed because of the UND game. It is definitely a dive bar, so keep that in mind with your expectations. The crowd was mostly younger, but it felt like everyone was comfortable and just there to have a good time. We ordered a pizza and jalapeño poppers. The poppers were a miss, there were not many, and the flavor just was not great. The pizza though was solid, and their Friday deal for an extra large at 14 dollars was a nice surprise. They also have a good selection of beers and mixed drinks. Service was rough at first. Our server forgot our ranch and drinks a couple of times, but once another server jumped in to help, things got better. If you are looking for a laid back dive bar with decent food and cheap pizza deals, Joe Blacks is not bad especially if you are already in the area for a game. read more

Ordered a bacon cheese burger for pick up. Burnt black bacon, top bun placed at bottom which soaked up all the condensation and made it unpleasant, and the patty was dry. Disappointed. read more

Our group of 6 decided on Joe Black's after going to the Toasted Frog and seeing how pristine and upscale it looked. We wanted a more "real" place and that's Joe! Since the night was about all of us hanging out together, the food takes a bit of a backseat to the atmosphere but I went with the Firehouse burger and I can share the following: Not that hot (not that pepper jack and jalapeno are really all that spicy, so no false advertising or anything), low quality cheese (which I get), burger was rather overdone (they wouldn't cook them rare, "they're too thin so you get it well done", and I ordered it anyway so that's on me) and flavorless. I can really only ding them for the flavorless part - the burger ideally is ground beef mixed with spices, not just sauce thrown on later - but all the rest together is characteristic of a place that is a bar with food, not a restaurant with alcohol. Considering the size of the menu, they should reprioritize a little is my recommendation. Hovering over the stars, my reaction is a solid "OK" to this place. Nice staff, nice atmosphere, the food needs some work. But then I scrolled through other reviews and realized, ya know, this is a bar, people use it as a bar, I didn't even order a drink (wasn't feeling 100% that night)... so I will moderate my judgment and stick with 4 stars. Lots of traffic and it must be hard to get overflow from the establishment next door...second choice to the dance, so to speak, but the staff is super friendly, the beers are more than adequate, and there is a reasonable selection of choices on the menu from salads to other comfort bar foods to make virtually everyone happy. Very nice place to hang out after a day's toil, with both a welcoming and low key atmosphere that makes you feel quite at home. Well, I've dropped in here a couple times. The place can be either really dead or really packed. I don't know anything about the food here, I've only been here late at night.... Anyhow, they have a ton of random stuff here from pool tables to flat screens to blackjack (?) -- or some sort of gambling anyhow. Not a bad place to drop in from time to time. I have been going to Joe Blacks for almost 2 years. I am a loyal customer who always tips over 20% as I work in the service industry as well. I went there with my friends tonight and was not allowed to go close my tab because I walked out of the bar with my drink to go smoke. I am more than upset about the situation. I understand that they had to take my drink away outside, but I was completely cooperative and over the age of 21. I now have to go back in the morning to explain that their asshole bouncers we're too drunk with power up their asses to let me close my tab. I never had a bad thing to say until today. If you are looking for a place to go in grand forks, this is not it. They are known as the college bar and that's great for the college kids and underage people trying to use their fake IDs, which they do accept! I've witnessed it. I attempted to inquire about items on your menu, and when I asked the question "Do you have any soup" they hung up on me. At this time I called back and in the background I heard the original person on the phone stating that "I already hung up on him" they then started to give me a hard time about asking about food that was available. They then made me say soup and spell it because they couldn't be bothered to answer yes or no. As I asked about the item multiple times they then called me a b**ch and then hung up again. Even though the menu stated that there is a "Crock Soup". I felt discriminated against because I am a homosexual. As a homosexual this is uncalled for, I know this is only a phone call but the customer service could have been better. How will me and my gay lover attempt our sexual practice with your "crock soup" there are times and places but this was a legitimate question. read more

Great mushroom and Swiss burger. It was hot and tasty. Service was on point. The bar comes off a lot stronger than the grill part, so wouldn't take family, but does the trick for lunch. read more

I'm giving them two stars based solely on the fact that they do not allow children on their outside sidewalk. We are from CO and we just moved here so not sure if that's a ND law but it's stupid. The bartender was super cool and let us finish our beers at least. I get if you don't want kids inside but outside is kind of ridiculous, especially if there's something kid friendly going on downtown. read more

The burgers here are the best in Grand Forks although many people don't think of eating here because the food is only served to a certain time (not sure the time but it is 5-6). Also, beware of coming here on a Friday/Saturday night after 10p during the school year as it WILL be packed and full of us college kids. The staff is great and know how to pour a drink. read more

Tried to get into the Toasted Frog but the wait was around 45 minutes so instead of hopping back in the car and going somewhere else we opted for the bar & grill next door. The wait staff was was very friendly and checked in often which was great. The selection of beer was good and adequate and if you want to go somewhere to watch a game or some other sports, this would be a good place to go. Seems like a great bar to hang out in!! So, if I would give it either four or five stars for that. The problem is that we went here for dinner. Personally I didn't want to go here but the other two I was with outnumbered me. The food took a while. A little longer than I would have expected and when it did come it was ok. Not great but ok. I had the taco grinder and wished I would have had something else. They seemed to have a great selection on the menu and it left me wishing I would have went with something else. The portions are significant so if you're looking to get a lot for your money, this would be a good place. in the end, this is a great bar that offers a lot for your money. I could give or take this place. Sometimes it is packed to past capacity and there is no where to move. The staff is friendly enough. Drinks are alright. If you're walking around downtown it's an ok place to stop and have a drink. read more

Now if you don't drink alcohol, you can't be at JB's. That is great for those who have medical reasons they can't drink alcohol. I have such a situation, and my friend and I had our sodas removed from our hands by the boss and told us to never come back the other day. WE had been coming there for quite a while, and often we would enjoy a great burger or other items and have our sodas. Plus we enjoyed the atmosphere! But guess that is no more. It was convenient, just down the street. Guess we can find another bar that will accept us, there are many more! read more

Came in for dinner and drinks. The food was good not much I would say for the employees. Watched a worker single out a gentleman and started pushing him into the wall and being very physical against him. Didn't feel comfortable there and we ended out evening early. The employee laughing about it after saying he 'didn't like' the patron he roughed up. The police should of been contacted! Terrible experience and hope this is not customary behavior there. read more
