Excellent flaky crust, fillings ranging from classics to unique flavors, great price and value and…read morethe loaded fries are amazing (sliced rounds of potato with delicious toppings and sauces, mmm!) I hope to see some healthier choices for sides to round out the rich flavors of the meat pies. They are still working out a reliable schedule, but if you see the sign out on Allen Road they ARE open! As of the time I am writing (Aug '24) they are temporarily closed. Their main business is a catering service and they recently had a big loss of ingredients due to power issues at their building and they needed to take some time to focus on getting the catering side back up and running, but their site says they will be back in the fall (Nov '24). Perhaps they will add some nice salads to their menu when they come back?

Motor City Meat Pies is a fantastic new hand pie/empanada place that recently opened in the…read morebuilding right across from El Jalapeno. It's a bit hard to find, since the entrance, through a labeled set of double doors, is actually in the rear of the building. They put a small sign up along Allen Rd. during their business hours, but it can still be a bit hard to find. When you walk in, you'll basically only find a single counter pickup area. Behind the counter you can see a couple of shelves filled with bottles and sundries. It honestly doesn't look like a restaurant at all and instead looks like some kind of store or office building. They do share the storefront with the Brooks and Landry Catering Company, so I guess most of the items belong to the other business? As I walked in around 15 minutes after opening for a quick weekday lunch, I met a gentleman in line who had already gone to Motor City Meat Pies multiple times since it opened a week ago. It already seemed pretty promising and when I picked up my bag of food and the smell wafted into my nose, I knew I was in for a treat. Papas Bravas ($7.99) - There was a heavy smell of what I thought was ranch seasoning and potatoes filling the car as I drove home. When I opened the box and looked things over, I saw that I was totally wrong! I guess all of the ingredients blend together to smell kind of like ranch. Starting at the bottom, there are several layers of tender potatoes that have a bit of a skin from being fried. They don't seem to be fried crisp on the exterior, but that's possibly due to steaming in the box during my 5 minute drive home before digging in. I'll have to have them fresh in the car next time. I love how the potatoes are sliced into rounds instead of cubed or cut into strips ala french fries. On top of the potatoes is a generous layer of paprika, followed by a drizzle of garlic aioli and tomato romesco sauce, and finally sprinkled liberally with savory cotija cheese, black pepper, and fresh green onion. The amount of seasoning and salt is appropriate for the dish - there's not on overwhelming amount soaking into the potatoes, so it still allows the potato taste to come through. (4/5) Spanish Chorizo & Sweet Potato Hand Pie ($8.99) - The puff pastry crust is perfection, layered with a light crisp, and not too oily. The sweet potato is soft, earthy, and sweet with additional sweetness added from caramelized onion. Small pieces of red pepper dot the interior and the flavor pairs well with everything else. The manchego cheese seems to have mostly settled on one side, adding a fatty stretchy quality to that side. These are not your typical hand pies/empanadas. They are huge and stuffed to the brim. I was full after eating half (plus a bit of the papas bravas). (5/5) Motor City Meat Pies is a great addition to Allen Park. They are still in their soft opening phase, but I honestly didn't see much that needed to change or improve. I will be back in the near future to try their other hand pie flavors. Edit: I went back two weeks later and they already made some menu changes and added a couple of flavors. The Papas Bravas are now called 313-FRIES and they now have Beefeater and Lamb Sherpherd's Pies. Chicken, Bacon & Green Onion ($8.99) - I think the empanadas were fried a bit too long this time - the exterior was very dark and the shell was noticeably crunchier. The interior is filled with tons of chicken and broccoli, with some bacon, green onion, and red pepper dotting the inside. It's all enveloped in a gooey orange colored cheesy sauce. The Beefeater ($8.99) - Loved this one, my favorite of the three I tried in total. Filled with tons of ground beef and mixed with potato and carrot. It's super aromatic with rich beef flavor. Yum!

Liberati's Italian Deli & Bakery - GREAT sauce and meatball sub!

I didn't even see the place (although I did choose it), but my dad really liked it. It reminded him of one of the Claro's Italian Markets in Southern California. I was looking forward to my slices of cheese pizza, but my brother called from the deli to inform me that they only had pepperoni by the slice. Look, I get it. Most people want pepperoni, and when you're serving by the slice, you can't try all these random combos that people might not eat. But no cheese? As in the most basic pizza option? That feels wrong. When I had my veggie sandwich a little later, it was very good. My brother had persuaded the guy to throw in some additional mushrooms. The bread was top notch, and I enjoyed the sandwich. For the price, it should have either been larger or included more vegetables, cheese, all of the above, anything. My dad really enjoyed his sandwich, but my brother was left wanting by his meatball sub. The local-brand potato chips were a nice touch. They use way too much plastic wrap.

We tried several items and would easily get all of them again: Pizza slices - generously sized square slices $2.69/slice; crunchy crust, small cup pepperonis, not too greasy and all together a great tasting slice but could use a few more pepperonis per slice Meatball sub- GREAT sauce and meatballs, and I am picky about eating anyone else's meatballs other than my own Off the Boat Hoagie: spicy capicola and other spicy coldcuts and cheese (couldn't remember them all) baked inside an extra large soft roll, served warm. It was VERY GOOD. At first seemed like a lot of bread in proportion to deli cuts, but it was a perfect ratio given the spiciness of the coldcuts inside. Cannoli - light shell and filling, not overly sweet. Really liked that they used a dusting of chocolate powder (not bitter cocoa) on the ends vs hard chocolate chips. This has become my new favorite bakery for cannolis! Definitely coming back here to try more of their hot and cold subs and dishes like lasagna, pasties, soups and pasta. Other than those fantastic cannolis they have other delectable pastries, breads, cookies and desserts to try. They also carry specialty Italian grocery items, a large deli with a good selection of meats and cheeses and cold takeout fridges with pastas, whole pizzas and lasagna to bake at home. Very friendly staff, consistent stream of customers picking up subs, pizza slices, breads, and 3 small tables with chairs in the store to sit and enjoy the food if you can't wait until you get home.
