Kitchen remodel including cabinets, butcher block countertops, range hood installation, concrete island, lighting, paint flooring etc.

We have had Jason and his crew out for 3 separate projects now, and I'm constantly pleased with the quality and ease it is to work with him. You can tell how hardworking these guys are, the price is competitive and they don't cut corners. The first time Jason came out to provide an estimate he said he shoots from the hip and that sums it up. He has the experience to foresee problems others would miss in the planning, and has cost-effective solutions to make you feel taken care of. You get transparency in pricing and quality work. Our house has been transformed into what truly feels like home, including a full kitchen remodel, bath remodel, flooring installation, paint, baseboards, window trim, lighting; we moved our laundry room to have a more open concept design, and Jason took exactly what we envisioned and made it happen. He navigated the permitting and we never had to worry about any details. That said, he puts in serious hours and we are so appreciative. The latest project was a fence and gate with solar lights and they busted it out in no time. I recommend JNM to anyone I know looking for projects big or small-- renovations, new builds, small projects, you name it.

Curb Appeal Construction

You know I have a really hard time wanting to give family owned business lower ratings but I didn't…read morereally enjoy my experience with curb appeal. I waited years to post this review to see if I would feel better about it. I do not. Blaine Jr comes through and does a long winded presentation that makes you feel like the company will be professional. I needed my sunroom roof redone since it was leaking. In actuality, the whole sunroom probably needed to be replaced. The sunroom was switched from glass to plastic per my request. He told me during our long meeting that I would be able to discuss it more when the crew came in. I came home and they had already started and no discussion was had with me about anything. I figured they knew what they were doing so I just went with it. The next day I came home and there was double the amount of support beams that blocked out a good amount of sun. I found this odd as the plastic is significantly lighter than the glass that was previously there. I feel like he forgot he was using plastic and planned it for the glass. I paid for more wood that wasn't needed and the sunroom does not look as good with all the extra beams. It also started to leak within a couple months again and the crew had to come back out and fix it. They changed it up a little and added weather strip that looks forever to come in. I'm a few years out now and the sunroom is leaking again and every time I look at how many beams there are up there I'm upset again about the whole thing. I should have waited and replaced the entire sunroom and gone with someone else. On top of it, I felt like Blaine Jr was dismissive, condescending, and kind of a know it all. I had to request to not speak to him anymore and did all ongoing discussions with the lead instead. On a side note... the crew was very nice and did their best.

I found Travis through the Yelp "My projects" section where I was trying to find a contractor to help us fix a leak in our guest bedroom. We couldn't find where the leak was coming from and I was trying to get price estimates from different contractors to solve the problem. Most of the contractors said they couldn't give a real estimate till they started doing the full project which seemed understandable. What stood out about Travis though is that he made the effort to say for $100 he would assess the issue by cutting out a piece of my drywall and give me a proper estimate. My fiancé and I were on board and happy to see someone take initiative like Travis. Travis then went on to find a pinhole leak in one of our old copper pipes and he right away gave us an estimate that was much more reasonable than other contractors we spoke with. Travis went on to fix our leaky pipes and found out that we replaced the wrong pipe. There was a pipe above the one we saw that was actually the cause of the leak. Travis messaged me and said that he would only charge for the additional pieces (no additional labor for his work), which was super generous and understanding of him. We got this repair done and out of the way in an efficient manner thanks to Travis' diligence. My fiance and I are now having Humboldt Renovation help us replace carpet in our house for "hardwood" vinyl, replacing our shower, and putting in a new dryer vent. I additionally want to add that I has also asked him to replace both of our garage door openers which we signed up to do and later on found out it was covered through our home warranty program. Even though I already signed for Travis to do the work, he was very understanding and let us get the repair done instead by our home warranty service. Humboldt Renovation and Design will be the only contractor we will be using around our house. He is a great person with a sweet family and does great work. Thank you Travis!!!

I was pleasantly surprised that the the owners of Humboldt Handyman responded to my email so quickly. I am thinking that all the handymen are quite busy after the earthquake. The owners came over to our house to assess the damage. The are professional and friendly. The following day they sent over a crew member who was very skilled, conscientious, and personable. He attached the bookcase to the wall quickly and confidently. I am very impressed with Humboldt Handyman. I will call them again if we have work for them. I enthusiastically recommend them!

No transparency about cost of materials; wish I had asked for "time and materials" rather than…read moreblanket fee for kitchen job. Costs can be padded with a bid and you can't see where the extra cost comes from. If you make a change, you have no idea how it impacts the budget and you can't get the others who are subcontracted to communicate with you. Any surprise changes that cost extra are added on to the original bid, yet if something is less or you do it yourself, the bid does not change. The first day was demo and lots of dry wall cutting. No protection was put up for the rest of the house. I complained and the next day the plastic went up and the air filter in, but the interior house was already covered in white drywall dust and we all were coughing. This was a major courtesy oversight and health hazard; I have never had any other workers make no effort to protect the rest of the house. BS subcontracted much of the work out. Except for the cabinet guys who were exceptional, the subcontractors did not clean up after themselves. One of Smith's workers was a new hire (new to this kind of work) and after some brief instructions was left on his own all day. Later worker offered out of the blue he "is not a maid", although I saw on his time card he noted an hour for clean-up. I found that evening all the trimmings and dry wall powder on the floor under a light; didn't even pick up the large pieces. Dry wall guy was very nice, but left a big mud mess, including the deck and a handprint on the gate outside. BS did not have a consistent crew but sub-contracted out most of the work, which I could have arranged myself. I think this is where BS problem is; he seems to get things organized but then leaves the work to people he does not know very well in your house and does not keep tabs on them. Hard to know who to trust. Many details left unfinished at my request, but was told by BS he would be back the next week to put in the appliances. When he didn't appear and I tried to arrange it, I was told it would be time and materials to get them installed. So I am calling someone else and doing what I can to finish the project myself.

I wish I had read reviews prior to hiring. We experienced the same inconsistency and mistrust as…read morepast postings suggest. From start to finish there was a lack of communication, they did not keep us updated as it went along. Potential customers should know, we were told to pay more than expected to have the job finished - or they would file a lean! Threatening a lawsuit was horrible especially after how much money we had given them!!! They received what was needed to finish the job. They never completed what was expected. Rotten.
