Alchemy did a great job on our residential, flat roof project. Amy made sure all the paperwork was clear and communicated on a timely basis. Alchemy is well respected for the quality of their construction/ remodeling work but was not the first company to come to mind when we decided to install a solar array. (We just didn't know they did solar.) Despite this, Alchemy Construction became our top choice after meeting with several companies and receiving estimates. We loved their clear communication and attention to detail- even in the estimate. Stephen met with us for our estimate. We discussed our expectations/ desires from a solar array, and he provided us with a first-hand understanding of what solar power could and could not do for our household. I did a major remodel of a very dilapidated building in Manila, and served as my own general contractor. I hired Alchemy to install radiant floor heating, an air-source heat pump, and a solar PV system. The price I paid was exactly what they said it would be, and it was their very first air-source heat pump installation, so they had to do quite a bit of trouble-shooting. Even so, it went smoothly and I feel it could not have been done better by anybody. Whenever I had a question or concern, they would get right on it for me. read more

I met Steve and Amy of Alchemy Construction in 2002 when I moved to McKinleyville, CA from the SF Bay Area. As I cleared the building site, Steve helped me refine my CAD house plans so they would meet the Building Code requirements. After the permits were issued, he helped me turn my plan of building a home in the woods into a reality. I spent many days at the jobsite during the process. The original budget I was working with was $175k. The final cost ended up being closer to $200k due to changes during the process. At each stage I asked for, and was given a choice of costs for changes I was considering. At various stages I decided to make changes in several features, including changing some materials. Examples: I chose to have Alchemy make a custom concrete countertop for the kitchen; changing the exterior siding from 4x8 fire-retardant sheeting to Redwood siding milled in Ukiah from salvaged logs; adding a 7-foot wide wrap-around deck on two sides of the house that included a ramp to accommodate a wheelchair for my mother. The Alchemy crew members were all very skilled, as well as friendly and accommodating. The end result is a well-built house that I am very happy with. In the 10 years I've lived in the house I occasionally seek advice from Steve, who always takes the time to help. We used Alchemy Construction for a major remodel of a rental property in Arcata. I live 3,000 miles away on the East Coast, so it was extremely important that we select a builder who not only put emphasis on quality construction but who also was deadline-oriented, reliable, and honest. Stephen Bohner and his wife Amy, who manages the Alchemy office, more than met our requirements. As with most building/remodeling projects, this one yielded some unanticipated challenges once work commenced, but Stephen kept in close touch with me and patiently and fully explained our options. When some of those challenges meant that the project would go over-budget, Stephen was flexible in helping find other ways to cut costs to make up for some of the overruns. While I "shopped the Internet" for some products, Stephen, is other cases, was able to use his connections to find better-priced products than ones I had found on my own. He actually hauled away a water heater (only a few years old but one of those things it turned out we couldn't use after the remodel) to his business to be part of a weekend garage sale and then reduced the amount it sold for from a current invoice. Stephen made sure I could check on the project's progress by setting up a Google+ account and on an almost-daily basis posted photos depicting work so far. Stephen and Amy were always attentive to my calls and e-mails, responding politely to my queries, either by phone, e-mail, and sometimes text. Throughout the project, it became clear that Alchemy Construction has a solid reputation with the City of Arcata and its employees, and this reputation was extremely helpful as we moved through various inspection stages. An added bonus was that Alchemy is also well-respected by Coast Central Credit Union, which made it easier as we requested periodic construction draws from re-financing monies borrowed from CCCU. When I finally was able to see the finished project for myself a couple of months after its completion, I was thrilled to find it everything that I had hoped it to be. More importantly, the tenant who eagerly waited to move in, is happily at home. read more
