This bar/eatery is what made me first fall in love with Fargo, the cutest up-and-coming city with genuinely some of the nicest people. It was located just around the corner from my hotel. Super easy to find. When I walked in, I sat at the far end of the bar. I can imagine this place gets super crowded with a small kitchen and limited seating. Not ideal for groups. Good beer selection seen on the rotating TV screen behind the bar. Lots of excellent California drafts, but I'm from there, so I tend towards anything from the Midwest. For dinner, I got the Bacon Cheddarpeno Burger with a side of Dill Pickle Fries & Jalapeño Ranch Dressing. SO good and properly spicy. My mouth waters just thinking about this upscale pub fare. I've been to JL Beers so many times over the years. I don't tire of eating their burgers and amazing chips. Most of the time I call in an order to go to either bring back to my desk or for the way home. Sometimes I will pop in and have a seat. While I switch up the burgers, my most often go-to is the Not Just A Nutter Burger. Fresh peanut butter, red pepper jelly, jalapeños, pepperjack cheese and bacon. Such a great combination. Gayle graduated many years ago from Moorhead State and upon hearing of her return, friends suggested that she stop at Mick's Office for old time sake. So around Lunch one day, we stopped by and after several minutes realized that you sometimes can't go home again. So we left and headed over to JL Beers for our mid-day meal. JL Beers is located across the side street from the Hotel Donaldson. It's a small and somewhat narrow space, but we able to snag a booth away from the bar. Good things can come in small packages, as the beer selection was generous and our burgers were amazing (with cajun fries). For a great Midwest burger, you really can go home again. Service was down home friendly and being able to fill out a couple of their postcards to tell the folks back home was a very cool extra touch. read more

We were looking for a place for a few beers and some decent bar food after being on the losing end of the NDSU-Colgate game and wanted to check out downtown Fargo. Enter JL Beers. OK, it has to be said: Kind of a lame, food-court name but I guess it works for a small franchise. Besides that, the place was great. We walked in, took seats at the bar and were soon informed and served by a very friendly bartender. My wife and friend both ordered beers but I can't remember what they ordered or if they liked them. I'll assume they did. I ordered a Flannel Mouth cider on tap, which may be my new favorite cider. As far as food goes, I ordered a BLT BLU, which is JL Beers' bacon and blue cheese burger. Excellent. And not as messy as I expected--my striking gray fleece pullover remained spot-free. I asked for the homemade chips with dill pickle seasoning as the side to my burger and they were perfect. There's something about freshly made potato chips. They're individual and combined at the same time. You can break off one or pull the entire thing up to your mouth and eat it like an apple. I prefer the former over the latter. You can space out your chips with your meal and as an added bonus, you don't look like a gluttonous jerk. The burger and chips cost $6.99. I'll write that again: The burger and chips cost $6.99. As someone who has seen the price of a simple hamburger skyrocket in Chicago, thanks to numerous noteworthy chefs opening a stream of urban burger places to, you know, "make the kind of food I like to eat," I've had enough of the $15 burger. It was nice to get a great deal on a really great meal, with no pretentious claims on the menu or wall. JL Beers is a small place and they're pretty smart about how they use their space. Just a few tables on the side and a bunch of seats at the bar. They made our chips at the other end of the bar so they're using every spot that they can. I like that it's small. You can actually watch games and talk to the people around you. It's an intimate place but in a bearded hipster sort of way. And that's not an insult. The bearded hipsters we encountered seemed genuine so maybe they weren't hipsters afterall. Or maybe hipsters--when they're not forced to squeeze into the cupcake pans that angry baby boomers want to force them into, are nice people. Imagine that. I know people can go overboard on the Fargo hospitality thing but it was very real when we were there. From the Bison fans at the FargoDome to the staff and other patrons at JL Beers, everyone was open and welcoming. I love random discussions with people so the entire day was a nice reminder that yes, there are people who are willing to strike up a conversation with people they don't know. I don't know if that covers all of Fargo, but it was very much a part of what I experienced--so much so that I'd like to come back one day and check out the city. And when I do, I'm sure I'll be stopping here again. read more

The best place to grab a burger and a beer in Fargo. My favorite burger is the Humpty Dumpty, which is topped with a fried egg. Add bacon. They make their fries and chips fresh cut and deep fried. Love the shoestring fries dipped in their Chipolte dip. Drool.... While there are now several JL's around the area, they are small and seating is limited. Avoid going at peak hours if you don't want to wait for a seat to open up. Not a great place for groups.
