Absolute best thing to eat after a long weekend camping trip. After eavesdropping on a local tour guide on the best local restaurants to visit and researching online, Jj's Diner has been mentioned multiple times. To refuel both my energy and hunger level, the double cheeseburger was very enticing (no regrets have been made). The buns were nice and soft. Patties were juicy and seared nicely with the ideal crust, and the gooey cheddar cheese was possibly the best thing about this burger. Fries were also good and salted pretty nice.. could use a bit more crunch to it. Malt melted a bit too fast in the heat but nevertheless, the chocolate flavored dessert was delicious. Good to note that I had also tried my friend's cheese curds, I believe, and they were uniquely delicious with the seasoning, flavorfully on par with the cheeseburger. My family and I just ate here (July 24, 2025) and it was great. The service was good, the staff was very friendly and the ambiance was inviting and cozy (think 'small town diner where you overhear a lot of casual, local conversations between families as they come and go'). I ordered the double cheeseburger special with bacon and I was pleasantly surprised (I was expecting McDonalds but they exceeded my expectations with a restaurant quality burger), then I ordered a cookie dough cyclone and it too was delicious. My family commended the Chili Dogs, the Pizza Burger, the Fish Sandwich, as well as the Cheese Curds (aka Cheddar Crisps or whatever they're called). Absolutely would eat here again, in fact, I think it's going to be the go-to spot for food in Luverne. Color me impressed! read more

It was the WORST food i've ever had. The fries were extremely cold and the burger was even colder. It was very slow, it look very long for our food to arrive. The tables look like they haven't been cleaned in a couple days. The customers were very rude as well as the employees. read more

Traveling across the country we were staying at the hotel just across the street from this restaurant. We were not too hungry so we decided to try a few items to share. We ordered a large hot fudge malt, a small onion rings and a fish with cheese sandwich. There were many flavors you can add to the malt. I chose hot fudge. I know it is boring but how can hot fudge goes wrong! Their malt was so thick and rich. I was glad that I ordered a large size. The fish sandwich and onion were okayed. I am not an onion ring fan. So I like trying various drive ins and have been blown away before, but this was standard fare all around. I got a burger and fries and a chocolate malt. The malt was too think to drink, and there was no spoon, but I make malts all the time and would say this was nothing special. A foam cup - which tries to claim on the outside it is environmentally friendly - was also quote off-putting. The burger was greasy and average. What was most disturbing was the complete disregard for the mask order. I was nervous about eating my food because the staff did not wear masks and most of the customers coming up did not either. This would have made a nice roadside stop on road trips, but if you can't even wear a mask, I wonder if you wear gloves, wash your hands, etc. read more

Our family stopped here while traveling out West on vacation because the reviews online looked good and it was right off the freeway. I'm surprised this place had 4.5 stars. We all got a burger and all of them were so overdone, they were actually crispy hard little discs. No flavor without toppings. Fries were not good either and when I ordered, I asked if it was possible to get the cheese for the cheese fries on the side since we were sharing them and not everyone wanted cheese. That would've been a good time for her to tell me it was not a cheese sauce, but rather they melt shredded cheese on top. Can't see how that would be good, but since she said it was fine, I was surprised when she handed me a little cup of cold shredded cheese with my order. I told her just to keep it since I obviously couldn't use it. She just shrugged and never offered me a refund for it. We do not recommend stopping here. read more

In the midst of a cross-country road trip my friend Dan D. and I were on a quest to find a Sonic's. This same quest began in Great Falls, Montana when we passed up a Sonic for a healthier choice. Unbeknownst to us we had passed up the last Sonic for 1,500 miles. What does this have to do with JJ's Tasty Drive In? Nothing. This is all to say that we craved good ol' American Drive In food, so when we stumbled upon this little gem we were transfixed. A large menu and delicious food met us inside. A thick, chocolatey shake, burger, and fries hit the spot for me. Portions were large, and the interior of this place has a great "open road" themed charm, complete with an old Harley hanging from the rafters. If your only experience with soft serve is that from the big chains like DQ (though I still like DQ) or McD's then you don't even know what you're missing. JJ's serves the real deal. The soft serve there is supreme. I didn't eat the food but I'm sure it was good. However, I can say that my root beer float was amazing and I wished I had gotten a larger size. Wish I lived closer to Luverne and I could go to JJ's all the time :) I've been going there since I was a little girl visiting my grandma. I hope it's still there for years to come! read more

Stopped in Luverne on our honeymoon road trip and we stopped in at the drive in after hiking at Blue Mounds State Park. Got a pineapple sundae and a Reese's cyclone - both were delicious. Stopped here on a road trip. Food was delicious. Place is very small and didn't feel very clean. All in all though a good experience and everything tasted great. The milkshake I got was more of a frosty and they didn't mix the chocolate syrup so half was just a vanilla frosty- don't know why they didn't just use chocolate ice cream. Since new non-local ownership 2 years ago the food has gone down drastically in quality and the prices have gone up. I have never seen the owner around the place. Total Yelp let-down. I've been all over this great country eating road-side chow in almost every corner. Stopped in as part of a drive across the country. There's nothing about JJ's that's worth the trip. Burger are fine, but everything else is passable to grim. Also - there's no love here unless you're a local. It was as if they were doing us a favor to let us eat here. Service is crazy slow, surly and indifferent. Bummer - because it's clear from all the families and kids post baseball games that this is a fave in the area. Would hope for so much more in a setting like this. read more

The portions are good and the soft serve is wonderful. The burgers range from good to just short of great, but quality can vary based on who is working. Some times the burgers are overly salty.
