If you're a blue belt and up, you're going to love this gym. The instructors and other students are extremely knowledgeable. Professor Menamy was trained under Rickson Gracie. Others have learned things from world renowned martial artists. Perks: -You can wear any color gi (some gyms make you wear white gi only) -two bathrooms, both with a shower which is pretty neat -very sanitary -dimmed lighting, no fluorescent hospital lights -you can purchase sets of class passes (4 classes, 6 classes, 1 class, 3x weekly for a month, and unlimited classes for a month)

However, I walked away from the academy. Some of the students(including one who ran for governor during the recall election for ca. governor, and "informed" me that Gavin Newsom was a pedophile).bought into RW talking points and Covid misinformation, and I frankly felt uncomfortable, especially as a Black Man. I would've left it there and said nothing. However, after tweeting about my experience(without naming Martin or the academy), I was approached by one of their senior students/instructors while I was out working. How he found me, I don't know. but it wasn't happenstance. Although there was no direct threat made, it was certainly implied. It's especially galling because I was a long-time student here. But, I guess those on the "right" feel they can intimidate anyone now, for any reason. In any case, I'm training a different martial art now, no worries. But I'll never touch Systema again.

Gracie Beverly Hills (GBH) is a great choice for jiu jitsu, whether you are a beginner or a player…read morewith experience. After researching options, I chose to join this school. If you don't know, GBH is affiliated with Gracie University: the home of BJJ in the United States founded by UFC creator Rorion Gracie, the visionary son of Helio Gracie (the originator of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). In short, if you believe pedigree matters, look no further. Gracie University is now run by Rorion's sons, Ryron and Rener, who continue to develop the Gracie philosophy, which aims to encourage and retain students. Mike Everett, GBH's owner, is a Gracie black belt (search YT for "flowmaster mike") and runs the academy as a "Level 4" training center. This means GBH has programs suited for players with widely different goals. Whether motivated to learn self-defense or prefer to test yourself in competition, there are classes and players here that will work with you to achieve those goals in a friendly and cooperative atmosphere. The Gracie system lets the individual work at his/her own pace. As a Level 4 training center, GBH's program is authorized to instruct in techniques that can lead to the coveted Gracie black belt. At GBH, classes are structured to develop students wholistically, from a Combatives program that teaches the basics to a Masters Cycle program that allows more advanced students to grow. Also, there are private lessons as well as a great kid's program, with students young and old, male and female. All classes are structured to give students exposure to a wide variety of techniques, including the opportunity to test and perfect them through sparring. The facilities are conveniently located in the heart of Beverly Hills, with a friendly staff and patronage. Importantly, the mats are clean and well maintained. Also, there are private changing rooms and showers, which are not always found at other schools. I made the decision to join 5 years ago, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

To give you some context, I trained Aikido for 5 years, including training in Japan where Aikido was founded and trained a couple years of Taekwondo. Training Revat has made a profound difference in the quality of my life. Yes, my fighting skills are improving by leaps and bounds, however, my confidence with men, and in myself, has become solid. The training not only conditions your reflexes to act automatically and effectively, but it includes life lessons at every step. I get the opportunity to see how I behave under different training situations and notice where in life I behave the same way. This gives me the opportunity to change how I'm approaching things both in my life and in training.

The majority of the classes here are mostly for men so it was perfect timing for me. I persuaded my coworker to take the class with me. Our instructor, Julie, was a small asian woman that knows her self defense. I'm taller than her and when she held me, there were many times I was unable to break away! Dont be fooled by her size! Our class size was small but very effective during the one hour instruction. During our class, Dimitri (another instructor) assisted by practicing with us so that we had a better feeling of how it is to be attacked by a man (since most little asian women dont do that type of stuff....). After each class, Julie emailed all of us a review of what we learned and how to practice our moves and forms of defense. Great class! I learned a lot! Parking in the area is limited but some street parking is available. Easily accessible by CTA blue line.
