After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

From the spicy starters to the sumptuous mains, it doesn't matter if you taste ventures more towards the creamy korma, the marvellous marsala or the sumptuously strong rogan josh, there's something for everyone here. The accompaniments are equally delicious and the drinks are served to perfection (the sour fizz is an effervescent delight). With plenty of room downstairs in the Bollywood and a wonderful atmosphere courtesy of the wall screens showing off the best of Indi-pop and bhangra tunes, Hasan's isn't the best Indian restaurant in the vicinity - it's one of the best in the city.

Browsing through just-eat.co.uk one Saturday evening, we happened upon Al-Talia. Enticed by their…read morecurry deal (4 onion bahjis, salad, mint sauce, any 2 normal curries, fried rice, 4 chapaties and chips) for a bargainous £13, we decided to place an order. Except just-eat told us we were outside the delivery area. Hmmm. So we phoned up, asked if they delivered to Gipton (they do) and duly placed an order. As it was a Saturday evening, we fully expected to wait ages for it to turn up. They gave us a delivery time of about 40 minutes but it arrived much quicker than that. We added 2 popadoms and a garlic nan to our order, bringing our grand total to £15.10. And for that very respectable price, we got, well, a small banquet - to be honest, I should've guessed it was going to be big since it arrived in a box... For the amount we got, you could've fed 4 people and had enough for leftovers. And the quality was incredible, my korma was beautifully creamy and the boyfriend's masala was wolfed down - which I always take as a good sign! Everything was utterly delicious, even the salad was good quality and very fresh and the garlic nan...wow. Delicious. I have no other words to describe it. Kudos to the delivery driver for finding our house without the need to call us and ask for directions (we're on a new build estate which isn't on most sat navs yet) and he was really polite and friendly too, which is always a good thing. All in all, a great take away and one we'll definitely order from again.
