"Why do you build me up Buttercup, baby…read moreJust to let me down?" (The Foundations) We bought two Butter Braided Pastries as a school fundraiser for a family friend's student son. We just cooked up the Cinnamon Loaf tonight and it was FANTASTIC. The loaves arrive frozen and you'll have to take them out of their wrappers, cover them with plastic wrap, and let them thaw and rise for 8-12 hours before baking. So you'll need to do some advance planning in order for it to be ready when you want to sample the goods. After our loaf thawed and rose, it was twice as big as when it started off. Next it went into the oven for 25 minutes at 325 degrees. It came packaged with an optional packet of white icing to drizzle across the top, but we didn't choose to use that. The packet says the loaf will yield 11 servings at 180 calories. We tried to faithfully cut our slices accordingly, and did a pretty good job. Each slice weighed in at around 2 ounces. The pastry was super flaky - almost croissant-like. The filling was sweet and decadent, and we didn't miss that optional frosting one bit. All in all, we were very very happy with the way our Cinnamon Braided pastry came out. And best of all, we still have a Cinnamon Roll loaf in the freezer!

Really tried to like it but was mostly colored syrupy sugar filling with no fruit taste. It smelled artificial. Even the family that sold it hated the overpowering sugar. All I could see was a small section of prepackaged homemade cookies , not a big selection, and a few prepackaged bars at an outrageous price for 6 lemon bars at $20. Maybe locals understand what this business is, but a visitor trying to buy a coffee cake from a business that has "cake" right in the name was left confused, with no real assistance from any employee.

We're currently working our way through the Iowa Tenderloin Trail, stopping at tour stops all…read moreacross our fine state. Today we visited Belmond to conquer the famous tenderloin from the Blemond Drive-In. This place was easy to find, right along US 69 on the south end of Belmond just north of Casey's. The setting is nice - a small dining room but the place is decked out with town spirit. On the walls you'll find Navy & Green Blemond-Klemme Broncos jerseys, photos, posters and even a bronco head and pennant at one end. Small-town Iowa is typically very proud of their local teams and the Belmond Drive-In displays the town's pride well. Nothing fancy here - a counter with a few stools and tables/booths elsewhere. It looks like they have a room in the back for larger groups. The restrooms were nice and clean and the restaurant itself was very nice, though weird because there isn't a sink in there - it's outside of it. Our waitress was really friendly and attentive. Since we were there for the tenderloin, we were expecting it to be one mean sandwich. After all, this sandwich was one of the Iowa Pork Producers' yearly award winners for Best Tenderloin. It arrived at the table and though it tasted good, I think the tenderloin itself was a tad on the small side. Great flavor, nice and juicy, but a tad small. Don't let that stop you from trying it. It's actually a good thing because then you can indulge on one of their great shakes or malts. I had a peach shake and wasn't disappointed. It had pieces of peach right in it. The menu is your typical small-town cafe menu - mostly sandwiches, salads and the like. They have a good hamburger according to some I have talked with. Overall, I enjoyed eating at the Belmond Drive-In. They make a good tenderloin and some great ice cream.

I've driven through Eagle Grove several times and for a variety of timing reasons, they've always been closed. Both my son and I enjoyed our ice cream, chocolate chip cookie dough for me and mint chocolate chip for him. We got a lot of ice cream for a little over $3. They also offer floats, banana splits, sundaes, along with the expected hamburger and chicken offerings. There is also comfortable indoor seating and a really friendly local staff.
